cause of this fire. the mandarin garden restaurant actually burned twice. once at mid night and again at 5:00 when the fire flared up again. >> the fire was intensely red. like the color of my jacket. and then we came out and evacuated. >> firefighters left the first time after determining that building was cold. >> police find themselves in life and death civsituations. one area that few officers are prepared for is a fight in the water. reporter david ono with our sister station in l.a. shows you how they're training to fix that right now. now how much more frightening that fight would be under water. officer mark tagliocca is a trainer at the law enforcement training center. >> you can take the best fighter in the world, put them in the water and all of their skills pretty much die. >> he starts with basic techniques, like keep these officers on dry ground. >> blade your hand, swim to the outside, chop down, step back, we assess what you need to do. >> reporter: our scenarios are increasingly aggressive, ultimately leading to this. >> the threat level for an officer rises very quick as soon as you enter the water. if you have all of your equipment on, your uniform, your gun belt, your boots, you can't tread water forever with shorts and a t-shirt. >> once you're in, you have seconds to get your vest off and pull your weapon. >> we do it in five seconds. and then three. but what if that suspect is right on top of you. i failed dramatically. losing containment, he basically smashes me. a second try works better as i learn to control him and then use a kick to get away. >> you're trying to keep yourself afleet. float. at the same time, you're trying to deal with a suspect that could be trying to hold you under water, choke you out, do some type of serious bodily injury to you. >> it's a horrible thought, being choked under water. but it's a reality they have to prepare for. the more these officers train the more capable they are to make the split second decisions to survive hand-to-hand combat in water. in long beach, abc 7 news. >> this class is just one part of an intense two-week maritime course that trains officers from all around the world. >> wow. all right. thanksgiving is over. bring on the rest of the holidays like christmas. michelle obama welcomed the official tree to the white house to. it's an 18.5 foot fraser from pennsylvania. this year's tree will honor the military. preparations are underway right now for the tree-lighting ceremony in san francisco's union square. the 26th annual tree-lighting ceremony starts at 6:00 p.m. santa is expected to be there greeting holiday shoppers. >> lots of people are out getting their own christmas trees today. abc 7 news was there as crews unloaded trucks full of furs. according to the national christmas tree association, real trees are still out-selling art official runs running about two-to-one. >> st. anthony's is experiencing a holiday hangover today. it's the hardest day to find volunteers to serve 2400 meals to the homeless. >> we need about 70-75 volunteers a day. especially these days, right after the holidays, thanksgiving, christmas, we get a little bit of a skeleton crew. we rely on group volunteers. >> if you would like to v volunte volunteer, you can go to st. anthony's web site and sign up. >> for people who did their early black we continue to have that northerly wind giving us a freezing night and the chilly day. so as we take a look along with the chilly temperature, it's going to be a bit of a bieting breeze. wind gusts show you through overnight periods, generally 10-20 miles per hour. early tomorrow morning, we may have some wind gusts approaching 25 miles per hour. that's going to bring us the chill overnight tonight. frost and breeze across the region, 31 below the freezing mark in san jose. 32 and 41 dropping in san francisco. sunday morning, look at that. a lot of 20s. fairfield, santa rosa, the freezing mark in san jose will bottom out on sunday. monday, a bit warmer, so to speak. but, by tuesday, we'll see most locations above the freezing mark in the morning hours. so highs for your saturday after that chilly start, once again, we'll see lots of sunshine and temperatures below normal, mainly in the mid 50s across the bay area. accuweather 7 day forecast shows you very chilly tomorrow, frosty on sunday morning, that's the coldest morning. the chill hangs on by monday. and then we'll begin to inch up in the temperature d. clouds thicken on wentds. by thursday, we are today, we find some new details and more weapons out there. plus. ♪ >> a special tribt to the victims of those of the terrorist attacks two weeks ago today. >> and the cause to stay we want to update you on our breaking news out of colorado springs. police have confirmed the shoot ere is now in custody. it shows how many people might be hurt or dead. we know at least 7 people went to the hospital. that may include four officers wounded in two gun battles since noon today. we'll have the very latest at a local planned parenthood reaction coming up on abc 7 news at 5:00. friday is usually associated with bargain-crazed shoppers. this year, stores across the country are reporting lighter crowds. agents seized $530,000 in counter fete merchandise. but, first, san francisco police have found two dozen bats chained to street poles across the city, a dangerous situation since some of those bats have nails sticking out of them. the story first broke last night at 11:00. she joins us today from fishermen's wharf where officers made the discovery. >> this is the heart of a busy tourist area. everyone who's seen them find it completely unnerving. the bats look damageous and police want witnesses to come forward so they can help identify who's placing these bats across the city. >> this is really odd and it's more, like, archaic. >> this bat with nails in the end was found chained to a parking meter. >> it's pretty bizarre. and it's weird that there's so many all over the city. but at least they're not going around swinging it at people. >> reporter: so far, police say 27 bats have been located, but no reports of injuries. that's 11 more than when we first told you about the weapon-like objects last night. >> it's a little stranger than normal. >> jerry bourke alerted us to the bat and snapped the picture. >> they knew what they were doing. whoever did this put it together. this was not put together in an hour. >> he found the bat around 2:00 in the afternoon >> i think people, when they show something like that, the customer, they don't want to come inside. >> but by yesterday evening, police responded to 19th avenue and buckingham way along with many other seemingly random locations across the city. police thought this sawed off bat looked like a pipe bomb. the bomb squad eventually cleared it. officers who saw no immediate pattern or reasonable explanation grew frustrated last night. >> and it continues to be so. the latest bat was found this morning around 9:00. >> anesthesia athese are bats tn altered. the person that's making these bats are driving spikes, large nails, if you will, through the thick end of the baseball bat, more or less con verting them to a weapon and then chaining them to these poles. >> police say there's no clear motive as to why someone was place these bats around the city. we've heard several explanations from our viewers. i'll have more on that live at 6:00. >> a solemn ceremony was held in paris today on the two-week anniversary. >> the french national anthem was sung at the end of the ceremony at the national monoyum. the names of each of the 130 dead who died in those attacks were read aloud. french president, francois hol land vowed to destroy the cause of death to so many. at least eight people have been killed in the syrian city where isis has its headquarters. the suspects
