The black smoke filling the sky as three separate fires continue to burn this evening. Flames scorching more than 14,000 acres at Camp Pendleton. With temperatures and winds dropping, firefighters getting a foot up in the battle. But what a week its been. At one point, 11 fires burning at once. Leaving one person dead, charring at least 19,000 acres. Destroying at least 11 homes. Its a community on edge. Three people arrested for setting small fires. The blazes quickly put out. So far, investigators know the cause of just one of the fires. The blaze in Rancho Bernardo started by a spark at a construction project. This may be the cause of the fire. A landscaper caught it on camera. A small brush fire near a golf course, flames jumping across the street and they took off. Turning neighborhoods into this. Firefighters call the conditions in california the perfect recipe for disaster. This is just dry branches. Reporter this was a match. Exactly. Reporter and its not just here. Across the country, fire season lasts two months longer than usual. And this year alone, washington could spend nearly 2 billion fighting fires. Its only may. What does this say . A marin boat on the loose. Well look at fires at the height of a heat wave. And well show you new Technology Solutions that could help solve a major security issue at airports around the country. The bay area fire season is on tonight. And heres whats happening right now. A south bay brush fire with the potential to get bigger. Good evening. Im carolyn johnson. That fire broke out about 90 minutes ago in the Santa Cruz Mountains in morgan hill. Were giving you a live look at the firefighting effort taking place right now. What we know so far is this, that 5 to 7 acres of brush have burned, but crews are gaining the upper hand on this fire. Officials tell us they have stopped the fires forward progress and appear to have it pretty well d right now. Water dropping helicopters and planes are of course helping with this firefighting effort. We have been watching them drop retardants on the blaze, and theyre doing a good job at keeping it from spreading. Joining us on the telephone is brandon liski. Are you there . Yes, where am. Thank you for coming on. Tell us whats happening now in terms of where this fire is as far as cup tainment is concerned. Currently, as you were saying, the forward progress has stopped. Crews are actively putting in their control lines and mopping up the hot spots to insure that the fire stays within its established perimeters. No danger at this point, it looks like . There is still a danger, if the winds were to start kicking up and take some of the hotter your yeahs within the fires perimeter and send some hot embers outside the containment lines, it would cause problems.
