But Des Moines Public School officials hope some big changes are made in order to address their diverse student population. Justin surrency explains the School Districts plan of action for 2016. Governor branstads condition of the state should have been music to a School Teachers ears. The budget provides schools and deserve. Today im proposing an increase in k12 funding of over 145 million dollars. But in 2016 the Des Moines Public School district is worried about how that money is being used. Theres a couple areas we think the state can more to help students, especially students that have additional needs. Like atrisk students in poverty. Here in Des Moines Public Schools, three fourths of students qualify for free and reduced lunch. For the 2016 fiscal year. The district is budgeted 6,514 dollars per atrisk student. But in nearby districts such as ankeny, waukee and West Des Moines with signigicantly less atrisk students theres just a 68 dollar difference. We think the formula ought to be looked at and changed so it can better target those students that really are atrisk. The english Language Learning Program presents another hurdle. We have got students from 88 different countries, 1600 refugee students in total. The state program currently gives extra funds to a Student Learning the language for 5 years. The district hopes to bump it up to seven. A lot of experts say a student takes 6 to 7 years before becoming proficient in a language or not. In the meantime. Des moines Public School Officials Say they will work hard with what they have. And proving any childs education is always worth fighting for. Whether its a student whos a 5th generation iowan or one that arrived in our country five months ago, if they show up at our schools, we have an obligation to give them the best education we can. While the Des Moines Public Schools district has significantly more districts. They have seen their Graduation Rate rise 6 percent over the last nine years. Since Iowa State University freshman emmalee jacobs was hit and killed while crossing an intersection on campus. The case has gone cold. And police are pleading with the public to come forward. They are hoping to gain more leads. Now that students are back to class. Police say they have received some tips. But they have all lead to dead ends. Jacobs was on her way to class when she was hit by a car in the intersection of lincoln way and ash avenue. They say the difficulty in this case so far has been getting people to come forward with information.
