mine from a ship. >> reporter: u.s. officials tell me four tugboats contracted to pull the norwegian owned tanker, one of two tankers damaged in attacks thursday has been prevented from doing so by iranian gun boats that have surrounded the tanker. at first the iranians put out a press release saying they rescued all 44 of the sailors on these two disabled tankers. u.s. officials tell us one of the two tanker crews were detained by the iranians thursday after first being rescued by another merchant vessel. one of the crew members spoke earlier today on iranian state television. >> translator: i am from russia. they hosted us really well. everything is fine. >> reporter: only 23 are present in this video. the u.s. navy said it rescued 21 taylors from the other oil tanker that was attacked. important to remember those 23 sailors detained by iran have now been held for nearly two days against their will. u.s. central command released this photo showing what it says is an unexploded mine attached to the hull of one at tankers attacked outside the persian gulf thursday. this video all released by the u.s. military shows what it claims is proof of iran's involvement in the tacts. officials say this iranian islamic revolutionary guard boat later removed that unexploded mine from the hull. u.s. officials say all 21 sailors from the japanese owned tanker were rescued by the american guided missile destroyer and have been treated and returned to their ship and are preparing to tow the stricken vessel back to court. iranian vessels remain nearby lurking around the damaged hull. the unexploded mine removed from the tanker is the same type of mine used to attack four oil tankers last month in the same area. dana? >> dana: thank you. for more on, this let's bring in florida congressman michael walsh. you have so much information and knowledge on the middle east. let's get your big picture take on what do you think is happening? >> bottom line, maximum pressure campaign against the iranian economy is working. the amount of oil iran is exporting now that the president refused to extend waivers has gone from about 2.5 million barrels per day down to less than 200,000. >> dana: so they're not getting any money. >> they're not getting any money, any revenue. taking a play out of the play book, they call it the crisis elsewhere. it diverts their own population where you're seeing a lot of unrest. the iranian know they cannot take us on ship to ship, tank to tank. what they do, they try to have these asymettric attacks. we saw them potentially attack our shipping. we moved a carrier in. what i think is important that this administration is doing is saying know what, iran? we're not going to tact your proxies. we're going to hold you, the regime, responsible. that is a very different message. >> dana: let me ask you about the decision to release so quickly this video evidence. that's a little bit unusual. it's pretty persuasive. >> it is. it exposes how we got the video in terms of the collection assets we have. it is persuasive on the world stage. that is where this will be decide. so the question is, what next? i'll take us back to the 1980s when iran did this before. when they attacked global shipping in the straits of hormuz and president reagan began, he ordered the navy to be escorting the ship, we sank, ended up sinking several iranian ships and eventually they backed down. >> dana: president trump was asked about the state of hormuz and the possibility of the iranians trying to close it. listen to what he said. >> they aren't going to be closing it. if it closes, it won't be closed for long. they know it. they've been told in very strong terms. we want to get them back to the table. i'm ready when they are. >> dana: president keeps saying he's willing to talk. do they deserve to be spoken to? >> where the president i think needs to be consistent and clear is that the long term strategic objective here is to drive iran back to the table. when they came to the table for the iran deal several years ago, it's because the sanctions were working, very effective. so as long as we're in a position of strength and leverage, yes, i think that's what we should do. i hope the president gives us more time to allow these sanctions to truly take hold and get us to a position of advantage. the problem with time is heading into 2020, whether the iranians try to wait him out and hope democrats in charge that will turn this into an event. >> dana: the men being held, does it remind you of when they took the american -- the language was almost directly the same. >> that's right. well, not only those sailors and the folks they're holding now. they're still holding americans hostage right now as we speak, chained to a prison in the prison system. that is a u.n. human rights worker. that's a princeton professor. there are a number of hostages the iranians are holding that are american citizens. that should be a precondition before entering any talks. >> dana: absolutely. asked on fox and friends, this question about accepting information from foreign governments about campaign opponents. watch this. >> i don't think anybody would present me with anybody because they know how much i love this country. nobody's going to present me with anything bad. number two, if i was, and of course you have to look at it. if you don't look at it, you're not going to know if it's bad. of course you give to it the fbi or report to it the attorney general. >> dana: the president also brought up congress and said this about what members of congress do. >> people come up with research. let's call the fbi. the fbi doesn't have enough agents to take care of it. but you go talk honestly to congress men, they always do it. they have. it's called opo research. >> dana: you're new to congress. but do you take information from foreign governments about campaign opponents? >> i don't. more would i take information from a foreign government. of course, campaigns use opposition research provided by american firms. i think this is really trying to get the president, this is the media trying to get the president tied in knots on this one. we did have a two year investigation that did clear his campaign or him of any type of collusion with a foreign hostile power. we have to keep that in mind. >> dana: there are some who say this is controversy because the democrats try to get information from the steele dossier coming from a foreign government. >> two points here. one, we have to keep a very bright line between all of this kind of smoke and controversy here. the fact that the russians have and are continuing to try to interfere and under mind our electoral system by hacking into systems, by altering our database. they've successfully penetrated two counties in the state of florida. we must stay on top of that. we must keep that distinct from all of this controversy. two, i have to tell you, when i talk to floridians, they're not talking about this. they're talk about water, infrastructure, welfare. >> dana: they're not talking about this on the campaign trail. >> not even in their mind. >> dana: glad to have you here. thank you. the first democratic debate now taking shape, dnc unveiling the lineup of candidates who qualified on which night they will appear at the pivotal event later this month. peter doocy breaks it all down. did this draw going the way the dnc described it would? >> reporter: not exactly, dana. the dnc had been weighting different candidates, based on their polling, trying to spread the top contenders out against two nights. they wound out with four of the top five on the first stage. the first ones include bernie sanders, pete buttigieg and kamala harris. they are are going to share a stage with the former vice president. night number two is going to follow the first night where the other qualifiers are going to debate. polling leader there, elizabeth warren, she will be debating cory booker, beto o'rourke, john delaney, julian castro, tim ryan, bill deblasio and jay ensley. >> dana: how did they arrive at these two particular lists? >> reporter: nbc picked these candidates the old fashion way, by writing names on a piece of paper and pulling the names out. it happened behind closed doors off cam remark but a representative from each campaign was invited to attend each of the debates in miami will be two hours long. before commercial breaks are taken into account, if questions and answers are divided evenly, that adds up to 12 minutes of talking time for each person beginning 12 nights from tonight. >> dana: that's about as much time as they get on "the five." next, we'll talk about the first debate and who is perceived to gain or lose with this two day format. president trump addressing whether he'll fire kelly anne con way and sarah sanders departure. we'll go to the white house next. with all that usaa offers why go with anybody else? (michelle) i know what it's like to be in a financially struggling family. we had a lot of leftovers...[chuckles] i couldn't have asked for better parents, but like most people they didn't have anyone to teach them the best financial habits. so we changed that. as a financial health coach, i help people every day. i try to put myself in their shoes from my own experience. i connect to them because i've been there. helping families like mine save a little money changes everything. this is personalized guidance. this is wells fargo. >> dana: president trump claiming former white house counsel don mcgahn may have been con feuds during his testimony in the russian investigation. mcgahn saying he wanted mueller removed from the position because of perceived conflicts of interest. kevin corke is live at the white house with more. kevin, what does the president mean that mcgahn's testimony didn't matter? >> reporter: well, to hear him tell it, dana, it doesn't matter because if mcgahn didn't understand what the president, himself, meant or if he misremembered, it doesn't relate to him specifically anyway. now, that said, it's fair to say there are still a number of questions, dana, about what the president said to the white house counsel and how it came to be that mcgahn interpreted the idea that mueller, who the president repeatedly called conflicted, was, in fact, the target of the president's ire. in an exclusive interview with george stephanopoulos, he tried to explain why he thought mcgahn would say something that wasn't true or reflected a poor understanding of his comment. >> he said he wanted to make himself look like a good law yes, or he believed it because i would constantly tell anybody that would listen, including you, including the media, that robert mueller was conflicted. i didn't say that. >> reporter: now, that's important because it would appear that based on what mcgahn said, dana, that this would imply a possible obstruction of justice. white house said that's simply not the case. >> dana: every day there's something on that one. office of special counsel suggesting that the president fire kelly anne conway for violating the hatch act. >> reporter: not only is the president rejecting that suggestion, he's going so far as to say it is unfair to hold her to a standard when she was merely answering a question. people ask about a candidate, she's going to talk about it. it's her right as an american. now that said, i thought it was fair to clarify what the office of special counsel meant. so let me share the sound byte from the special counsel himself. listen here. >> we do not dispute that miss conway has the right to free speech. we are committed to up holding free speech rights for all americans. what we are saying is that there are some limits on that free speech while she is son duty to ensure that we have this depoliticized work force. >> reporter: now, for the folks at home, the hatch act limits what government employees can and can't do with respect to political activity. but to hear the president tell it, kellyanne was answering a question and for him, this is a free speech issue. as for firing her, he said this. >> no, i'm not going to fire her. i think she's a terrific person. she's a tremendous spokes person. she's just been great. certainly nothing, based on what i saw yesterday, how could you do that? they have tried to take away her speech and i think you're entitled to free speech in this country. >> reporter: finally, sarah sanders, white house press secretary is stepping down after nearly two years on the job. president saying she did great service for her country. she was the third woman to hold the position of white house press secretary. >> dana: i know she's put her heart and soul into the job. i remember when i first left, i thought i was okay. after two months i thought i recovered. really, two years later, i was still tired. i hope she recuperates and get chance to be with her children a little bit more. we thank you. we look forward to talking to her before she leaves at the end of the month. thanks, kevin. >> reporter: you bet. >> dana: places are set for the first democratic debate, but there's always some controversy. we'll ask the dnc communications director about it. climate change a major issue for the democratic field. rick perry responds to criticism of the trump administration policies on the environment. my insurance rates are probably gonna double. but dad, you've got allstate. with accident forgiveness they guarantee your rates won't go up just because of an accident. smart kid. indeed. are you in good hands? the first survivor of ais out there.sease and the alzheimer's association is going to make it happen. but we won't get there without you. visit alz.org to join the fight. i felt i couldn't be at my best wifor my family. c, in only 8 weeks with mavyret, i was cured and left those doubts behind. i faced reminders of my hep c every day. but in only 8 weeks with mavyret, i was cured. even hanging with friends i worried about my hep c. but in only 8 weeks with mavyret, i was cured. mavyret is the only 8-week cure for all common types of hep c. before starting mavyret your doctor will test if you've had hepatitis b which may flare up and cause serious liver problems during and after treatment. tell your doctor if you've had hepatitis b, a liver or kidney transplant, other liver problems, hiv-1, or other medical conditions, and all medicines you take including herbal supplements. don't take mavyret with atazanavir or rifampin, or if you've had certain liver problems. common side effects include headache and tiredness. with hep c behind me, i feel free... ...fearless... ...and there's no looking back, because i am cured. talk to your doctor about mavyret. we like drip coffee, layovers- -and waiting on hold. what we don't like is relying on fancy technology for help. snail mail! we were invited to a y2k party... uh, didn't that happen, like, 20 years ago? oh, look, karolyn, we've got a mathematician on our hands! check it out! now you can schedule a callback or reschedule an appointment, even on nights and weekends. today's xfinity service. simple. easy. awesome. i'd rather not. >> dana: lineup is set for the first democratic debate. 20 candidates taking the stage over two night. drawing today divided the field into groups, each with a mix of high and low contenders. joining me communication director for the dnc. great to have you here in new york. as i understand it, you just came from the drawing. apparently there's a little bit of controversy already. reporting that there's a question about, did nbc choose which group was going to go first so they could maximize viewership? i wonder because you were there if you have any insight on that? >> i'm not going to get into exactly what happened in the room. our goal has always been to have maximum viewership. at the same time, we wanted fair and transparent process, and so when it came to that, we agreed with nbc to go ahead and split up the night, people who polled above 2%, people who polled below and do random drawings with each. we got what we have on each night. i think what the dnc wanted is a little bit more randomization. we wanted a little more transparency. we were very clear about that. >> dana: that first group on june 26, i think if we could put it up there includes booker, but warren, klobuchar, etc. already there's controversy with people saying the second night, if you can go to that, you'll have sanders and harris and biden and buttigieg so you have more of the higher vote total -- i should say polling contenders. what do you think of that? >> i think both nights will get amazing viewership. i think we're already starting to hear, people are extremely excited about these candidates. i think they're both very strong lineups. i think that you will also hear candidates respond to each other on various nights. >> dana: i was surprised you only get a minute to answer and 30 second followup. that's really hard. >> it is very hard. i think it will be interesting to see whether or not candidates, they're not just going to stick to the people on the stage. they're going to talk about their ideas. they're all going to try to cut through and try to see if they can make an impression, so their polling can go up so they can get more grass roots donors. >> dana: there are some who are upset. there was an ad that just ran, i'll have you watch this and react. >> yeah, i heard the dnc saying the governor doesn't qualify for the debate. that's horse bleep. you don't need to be from montana to know anybody who wins by four the same election trump won by 20 is doing something right. >> dana: i got to say the dog is the nice touch. steve bullock's office unhappy. they think they polled well enough to get into the debate, but it's not happening. >> i have a lot of respect for him. the fact that he's been able to win in montana and it is a trump state, i have a lot of respect for him. but we communicated the rules very early in the process. we said in december that this debate would happen. we set the threshold in february and we told his campaign in march that a certain poll would not count. it is an open-ended survey. open-ended surveys are never counted in any debate. >> dana: for somebody like bullock or the congressman from massachusetts, will they be able to make to it the second debate in july? >> absolutely. they should be running their campaigns and talking to voters as they continue to do so and try to get to the grass roots fund-raising number. you have to have an infrastructure in place in order to meet the grass roots fund-raising number and put polling at 1%. as i might remind you, that's not very high. and so i think that -- >> dana: even i can do that math. >> so i think they have every opportunity to make the second debate stage, which is at the end of july. that requirement will be two weeks before. >> dana: speaking of fund-raising, bloomberg reporting yesterday, or two days ago that in the first four months of 2019, the dnc spended more than it raised. and its counter part was stock piling cash. are you concerned that because you have so many candidates, the money is being spread so thin that it won't have what it needs to compete in 2020? >> the dnc will have what it needs in 2020. right now, after 2016, you might remember, a lot of groups popped up. a lot of groups supporting democrats. they popped up wanting to back democrats. >> dana: do you have concern because of the donor numbers, people who qualify for these debates, mean the candidates have to burn through their e-mail lists and may be hurting ballot candidates because the money is being spread so thinly? >> absolutely not. if you have a message that resonates you shouldn't have a hard time hitting that number. >> dana: thank you so much for being here. >> thank you. >> dana: secretary of state and president trump both blaming iran for at tax on two tankers near the persian gulf. you can see that there. iran denying any involvement, saying it had nothing to do with it. i will ask the energy secretary rick perry about that. and new developments in the search for a missing mother of five in connecticut. where police are now looking for her. there are three words when you live with migraine... "i am here." aim to say that more with aimovig. a preventive treatment for migraine in adults that reduces the number of monthly migraine days. for some, that number can be cut in half or more. don't take aimovig if you're allergic to it. allergic reactions like rash or swelling can happen hours to days after use. common side effects include injection site reactions and constipation. aim to be there more. talk to your doctor about aimovig. my gums are irritated. i don't have to worry about that, do i? harmful bacteria lurk just below the gum line. crest gum detoxify, voted product of the year. it works below the gum line to neutralize harmful plaque bacteria and help reverse early gum damage. gum detoxify, from crest. >> dana: showdown between washington and iran after the trump administration claims tehran was behind attacks on two commercial tankers near the straight of hormuz. iran calling the accusations war mongering, of all things. let's bring in rick perry, secretary of energy. i know secretary pompeo and the defense department, they're focused on their part of it. the energy super important for security. what do you think is going on there and what would you like to see happen next? >> reporter: dana, i was briefed this morning on the details that we have on it. it's obvious that iran continues to be bad neighbor. that's how they got into this position to begin with. they can't leave their neighbors alone. they can't continue to be engaged in nefarious acts and terrorism that's not acceptable. this country's not gonna put up with it. president trump's not gonna put up with it. the message is very clear. outside of it, secretary pompeo and secretary shanahan, they all have their roles to play in this. the doe side of it, i'm here the second largest facility in the world and they operate outside of the texas/louisiana border. being able to make sure that no matter what happens in that strait of hormuz, the united states is still going to be able to deliver a substantial amount of energy around the world. two years ago that wasn't possible. the world has changed. that's the miscalculation iran makes. they think somehow they can leverage this because historically they were a supplier of energy. the united states subplanted them. >> dana: you would say our energy markets don't s don't ha to worry about here. our allies in the region, are they with us? >> well, you can bet that whether it's the uae, saudi arabia, whether it's qatar, they understand the importance of keeping that strait open and keeping that energy flowing out of that part of the world. so, you know, tehran is skating on pretty thin ice, in my opinion. listen, all they have to do is act acceptable in the world community and they can get back and enjoy the benefits of being an oil producer in the world today. if they would understand that, then i think their world would be a lot better off. frankly, all of us would be happier. >> dana: you're there, you're at an event focusing on liquid natural gas. climate change is definitely going to be an issue. we were just talking about the dnc debate. you can bet that issue will be front and center. let me have you take a listen to what democrats are saying about the trump administration lack of policy on climate change and get your reaction. >> rest of the world hasn't given up on the paris climate accord. they know clean energy, a warming planet, there's not a single thing that building a wall or imposing a tariff can address on any of these issues. >> we have a president who rejects science. so i say to donald trump and the fossil fuel industry, climate change is not a hoax. but is a threat to our country and the planet. >> i am angry that we have a president who goes out and lies to the american people, calls this a climate hoax and says that wind turbines cause cancer. we know that they cause jobs. i have a vision to put 8 million people to work and save them from the ravages of this monster. >> dana: that's just a small sampling of what is out there against the president. i'll give you chance to respond to this president's approach to climate change. >> here's the fact. the united states is the only country in the world that's really leading in the reduction of energy related emissions. down some 14%. the u.s. and our lng that is is your planting those older inefficient power plants in europe is doing more to help the climate than any other country in the world. when you had our civil nuclear agreement, we just signed an agreement to expand the polish nuclear program. that's zero emissions. i hope the democrats are talk about zero emissions, low emission fuels, which the united states is leading the world in. >> dana: all right. before i let you go and get back to that beautiful weather down there in the south, i want to ask you, i usually don't pay attention to rumors, but there's so many rumors that you might be leaving your position and taking over as the secretary of another cabinet agency, veteran affairs, or that you might be leaving the trump administration altogether. how do you want to respond to those accounts from unnamed sources? >> look, i think you touched the key play there is that rumors that have run rampant from time to time. i have a great job, the most interesting job. in fact, the most interesting job. not the best job. but, listen, there will be people that surmise that i'm going over to veterans affairs. that i was going to be headed to dod. the fact is this. i have got this great, fabulous, interesting job and we're making a real difference around the world. so i'm excited about being able to help the president put his agenda in place and make sure american energy is having great impact all around this globe. it's a great time to be the secretary of energy. >> dana: all right. if that changes, give us a call. secretary of energy rick perry, thank you. >> you're welcome. >> dana: time for our campaign trail mix. first up, former vice president joe biden blasting amazon for not paying enough taxes, tweeting, i have nothing against amazon, but no company pulling in billions of dollars of profits should pay a lower tax rate than firefighters and teachers. we need to reward work, not just wealth. amazon fired back saying we paid $2.6 billion in corporate tax since 2016. we pay every penny we owe. meanwhile, senator gillibrand announces that massachusetts congressman seth molton signed her pledge to not use any stolen or hacked material during the campaign. molton not in that debate at the end of the month. jennifer julos was last seen developing her children off at school three weeks ago today. as the search for her intensifies in connecticut, a video said a pickup truck owned by her husband's company, was in her town the way she disappeared. >> reporter: the timing of the truck's location could prove relevant because her husband told investigators he was not where his ex-stranged wife lived the day she strength missing. his attorney pointed to phone records of an overseas call and meeting with a lawyer he had that day as proof he wasn't in the area on may 24th. but now we have learned he may have swapped trucks with an employee that day. i spoke with that employee's attorney, who could only say that his client is cooperating and not considered a suspect, adding this man no longer works for the group which builds these luxury homes. he reportedly used a black pickup of his boss' to work at home under instruct that day then returned it to dulos. the truck was picked up by a neighbor of dulos the day in question. it was that black pickup truck spotted in hartford after jennifer was reported missing with two people matching the description of dulos and his girlfriend dropping off garbage, some with blood stained clothes matching that of jennifer dulos. the attorney went on a radio show yesterday about hiring his own investigator for the case and said he thinks michelle trikonis may have been ruled out as a suspect. >> dana: we found out about a new search today. where were police looking? >> reporter: this was a fast moving story this afternoon. our cameras were the only ones there. there was a connecticut state team in avon searching with dive teams and dogs. divers were seen going in and out of this lake. dogs were seen sniffing around the perimeter. while state police were using motorized rafts to aid in the search. they spent a few hours there today. this area is very close to where we saw teams earlier this week looking at a water lake down the road where dulos was known for being the active member of water ski club. it was close to his home in farming ton where he returned. he has plead not guilty in this case. dana? >> dana: laura, thank you. connecticut republic under growing scrutiny after the death of a seventh american tourist. what we are learning about the latest victim. plus a 12th state bans sanctuary cities. where it happened today. follow us on social media. we're on twitter at daily briefing as well as daily briefing fnc. we're on instagram and facebook with that handle. orlando is the theme park capital of the world. also has the highest manufacturing jobs in the u.s. competition for the talent. >> you need more than just a pay check. you want to get all the advantages you can get. that's financial wellness. put your employees on a path to financial wellness with prudential. jill jill has entresto, and a na heart failure pill that helped keep people alive and out of the hospital. don't take entresto if pregnant; it can cause harm or death to an unborn baby. don't take entresto with an ace inhibitor or aliskiren or if you've had angioedema with an ace or arb. the most serious side effects are angioedema, low blood pressure, kidney problems, or high blood potassium. ask your doctor about entresto. where to next? >> reporter: well, leila cox, 53 years old, medical technician from staten island, new york, came here to celebrate her 53rd birthday, which was sunday. on monday, she was found dead in her resort room. investigators here say the cause of death was a heart tact, but her family is not buying that. we spoke to her 25-year-old son back in knoxville, tennessee, a few hours ago. he said he begged his mother not to go. now he said he's under pressure from the funeral home to cremate the body immediately. he said there's no reason a healthy 53-year-old woman would die suddenly. here's will cox. >> i can't even putted into words how frustrating it is just to get my mom's body back home. it's hard enough when you lose a parent, but knowing that a foreign country has total control of your mother's remains, is just -- it's unimaginable, having to deal with. >> reporter: so all will cox has now is a police report in spanish. he said he wants a toxicology report to be made. he said he was told by hospital officials here their toxicology machine was broken. this means seven now american tourists dead here in the past few months, all following a similar pattern. in a resort, often having alcohol from the minibar. police say those deaths are not linked. they're also investigating the possibility of counterfeit alcohol being used. dana? >> dana: steve, some people accused in the david ortiz shooting are also wanted here in the united states? >> reporter: that's right. police have nine suspects in custody now, two of those suspects are accused of carrying out violent crimes in the u.s., including one, louis rivas from pennsylvania. he's accused of shooting man in the back there. so nine in custody and right now ortiz is still in boston where he is continuing his recovery after being shot once in the back. dana? >> dana: all right. steve harrigan, thank you. next, president trump unveiling a new plan to help former prisoners. how it will help americans enter. how one changed this veteran's life. >> i don't know how to put it into words, but i'll try. he is a doer. he makes up every morning, let's do something. ok everyone! our mission is to provide complete, balanced nutrition for strength and energy! whoo-hoo! great-tasting ensure. with nine grams of protein and twenty-six vitamins and minerals. ensure, for strength and energy. and twenty-six vitamins and minerals. the first survivor of ais out there.sease and the alzheimer's association is going to make it happen. but we won't get there without you. visit alz.org to join the fight. hey, who are you?
