people were packed in at the country concert, there are still investigators inside doing tedious work, there are still bodies yet to be identified and families yet to be notified. we are getting an exclusive look at what the hotel room looked like one year ago, gives an idea what it was like, a lot of speculation whether there were two rooms are one room. doctor jason huffman was here at the same time a year ago for this same concert, he walked into the room with phone and took some video last year to show off the large two room suite that overlooked the strip to the actual festival. you see the perspective of what the gunman used and the unobstructed views of the festival grounds in the distance, gives you an idea of what he planned. authorities are still looking at that in the investigative part, had a chance to hear from so many folks not only here but first responders and city leaders in the last 24 hours. here is how one of the city leaders explains what is going on. >> these past 20 hours have been trying and we have a long way to go. i'm proud of the courage and resiliency displayed by all first responders. please allow our department the ability to do what they do best. investigate crime and keep you safe. >> reporter: at this hour, still a very large crime scene in the southern part of the strip, some areas you can go, this will be, investigators were told for a number of hours yesterday, they had to be done by 10:00 last night but when we talk to them off camera, in the same location they would have told you it would be longer than fat, this is a very large crime scene that spanned literally the entire festival grounds not counting the gunman's house or the hotel room or the streets where bodies were found. this goes on a number of days as families are searching for loved ones. it is very tragic, back to you guys. >> the stories of all the heroes who have come out of this you can't help but have tears in your eyes. authorities are trying to enter the mind of the man man as the search for motive continues. >> his father has a long criminal history. coverage from mesquite, nevada, 90 miles to the east of where the shooting happened. >> his father a bank robber on the fbi most wanted list in the 60s in 70s are definitely interesting fact that emerged in the last 24 hours but he is a bit of a mystery. at this point no digital footprints, in the next couple days a lot more information will come out but for now i want to show you two pictures we just took if we can put them on the screen from the two houses directly next door to 24's house, don't block out the highway, on the other side of interest, this is a long post on the front door but i want to read to you because it gives you a little glimpse into what it was like being a neighbor. our community is doing is best to heal the tragic events in las vegas, the shock that one of our neighbors was responsible for such a heinous act, we understand you have questions, we don't have anything relating to the actions of our neighbor or insight into his behavior, we did not know him, thank you for respecting our privacy, line we did not know him, imagine he lived here for a couple years, his neighbor directly next door to him, a guy that certainly kept to himself. that is what we are hearing here in nevada and his neighbors in florida. >> when we waved to him he wouldn't wave back. he would not engage in conversation. >> he and mary lou just like my husband and i. other than his line of work, professional gambling. >> reporter: mary lou, his girlfriend, lived in this home with him. you heard the mention gambling, that is what everyone talks about with stephen paddock, that is what he did, why he moved out to nevada, to get close to las vegas, one hour and 30 minutes drive outside las vegas. need to get you caught up on what went on in this home. we are here in this retirement community where stephen lived, there are four houses here, not many people back here, a quiet area. people were not allowed near this neighborhood. you can see behind me the garage is boarded up. that is how authorities entered the house. once they were in the recover 19 guns, a whole bunch of ammunition and explosives. they are trying to dig into this man's passed. he is still a mystery. >> thank you for that update from where the gunman lived, 90 miles east of where the shooting happened. las vegas witnessing the worst mass shooting in american history with no obvious red flags at this point. what exactly are investigators looking at a piece this together? heather: sheriff david like a spokesman and advisor for america first action and he joins us now to provide a little more insight, thank you for joining us first of all. what is the first thing you is happening in terms of trying to come up with a motive and figure this guy out. >> the first aspect of this is the collection of evidence. collect everything, don't try to determine its relevancy at this point, just make sure your process will be traced, there is other physical evidence and document evidence, what you do is start from the middle of the scene and work outwards. this is moving beyond the vegas strip in terms of interviewing people, looking at records, that sort of thing and once you have collected everything you start to put it together and analyze the picture will start to form tells you a lot about this situation. >> are you as surprised as a lot of people are and you have investigated a lot of crime but the initial what we learned initially about this man shows no outward political motives, no religious motives. you look for something, maybe a woman in his life that recently left him or financial troubles, the basic thing that seems to inspire the majority of these types of events are not there. does that surprise you at this point? >> once they start to analyze the evidence and the picture forms we will learn a lot about the scene but other things need to be looked at, see something say something campaign needs to be reevaluated because one of the most effective things we can do to prevent, detect, disrupt the sorts of investigation is to involve the public. this investigation goes on and they start to interview people, we will learn a lot more, maybe somebody did something including motel personnel, the video of this guy, this type of arsenal in the hotel or casino complex that comes later on but the see something say something a we don't find a more effective way to involve the public, i am talking law enforcement, it will be hard to get into prevention more than detection and disruption of this type of incident. heather: a fine line. you don't want to impede on people's freedom but at the same time you want to be able to recognize when there are red flags, something might be a little off. mike baker brought this up earlier. are there any types of checks and balances in terms of the amount of handguns, the amount of ammunition someone can purchase? the firearms this gentleman owns were legal, there were 23 found in the hotel room, another 19 at his home and that is what we know so far. is there any checks and balances with that that would be a red flag? >> if you buy 20 or more weapons does anything tell you that? >> we try to point to and find technical aspects of this, 20 handguns or one handgun or one rifle with 50 magazines will do the same amount of damage, maybe not in the period of time he did but we have got to find that sweet spot, that balance between protecting the public, protecting the homeland and preserving people's constitutional rights and there is a tricky thing in this situation because there are 300 million guns in the united states, we are not going to know where all of them are, some people have multiple guns but i want people to understand the ordinary gun owner would never dream, even having a nightmare, of taking that firearm and committing this type of carnage. i want to caution people about overreacting. i'm talking politicians, i am hearing it already, we need more gun control, no we don't. we need to do something but we need to do something reasonable, achievable. 300 million guns in circulation thinking you will collect those guns is not the answer. the average gun owner would never use that firearm in this sort of fashion. >> thank you, the discussion continues how to prevent things like this from happening. there are not a lot of good answers. thanks for coming on. >> the time is 10 minutes after the top of the hour. in the face of tragedy the trump administration urging americans to come together. >> the american spirit cannot and will not ever be broken. in the days ahead we will grieve as a nation, honor the memory of those lost as a nation. >> trying to see some positives from this story during the chaos, and iraq war veteran rushes to the scene to use his own truck as an ambulance to take victims to the hospital. and unbelievable story up next. ♪ at bp's cooper river plant, employees take safety personally - down to each piece of equipment, so they can protect their teammates and the surrounding wetlands, too. because safety is never being satisfied. and always working to be better. hey julie, i know today's critica...a sick day. need... dads don't take sick days... dads take dayquil severe. the non-drowsy, coughing, aching, fever, sore throat... ...stuffy head, no sick days medicine.
