Editor James Freeman and Editorial Board member mary kissel. Mary, the survivor, what happened . Effectively he was airing President Trump to fire him by giving interview to paul american prospect. You cant go against the president as policies as big as north korea. You continue proclaim to want to stoke and expect not to be fired. Look, paul, some of the president s top aides on both domestic front, gary cohn and polly front, hr mcmaster disagree. I dont think the president had a choice. Paul how did he contradict the president s policy . The president said we are not going to allow icbms that hit the United States. They are going to denuclearize in exchange. Steve bannon is characterized as a hawk but thats actually on the far left side of politics. Paul that would be a strategic victory for china. One of the goal is to push out of asia and theres no military solution to north korea at the same time the president and his chief defense secretary, look, if you get this Nuclear Weapon can missiles that are going to hit up take military action. Exactly. Paul its on the table so undermining the message the president is trying to send to china, the seriousness of purpose in north korea okay, james, bannons legacy, what does this mean . Talk about did he accomplish good or ill . Well, i think in terms of accomplishments, i would put on the plus side, i think he was encouraging in getting the president to get out of the paris climate deal. I think what its breasting with bannon for a lot of conservatives, i think they might be liked his attitude more than all of his policies. The trade and immigration agenda is not exactly free market. He was 44 tax on your income, james. [laughter] paul he was for increasing taxes. He was. I think it should give conservatives pause that he was reaching out to leftwinger bob to make common cause about it. But i think what bannon did bring and this maybe a loss in the white house is an instinct, nonconformism which in washington means youre generally pushing back to people that want to make government much bigger. The concern where you saw conservatives saying disappointment in bannon leaving ivanka trump and jared are not going to be consistent. Hold on. Scott pruitt are pushing forward the deregulation agenda. I dont know, james, think about the paris climate agreement. It wasnt just steve bannon pushing for President Trump to pull out. Scott pruitt had a lot to say too. Paul you have some very conservative free market wonks, they have a conservative agenda, so im not on the judicial side you have leonard leo, federal society and others who are going through nominations. How much youre going to miss here i guess would be my point beyond the fact that he did like to talk too much with some of the racial politics. Yeah, i think everything you said in terms of scott pruitt and and kevin, some of the other who is have joined the administration, absolutely very positive developments, but we well see. I think part of the concern is john kelly is kind of a blank sleight in terms of domestic policy and to be determined but lets hope for the best. Paul quickly, he said ive been liberated breitbart, bannon and maybe go to breitbart, can he do harm to trump outside than having been inside . I dont know, what has trump accomplished on the legislative agenda. I dont think hes done much good on the inside and can he done much worse on the outside, i dont know, i dont think so, paul. Paul thank you both. Paul President Trump coming under fire from both democrats and republicans this week after he doubled down tuesday on claims that both sides were to blame for the violence that erupted at a rally held by white nationalists in charlottesville last weekend. I think theres blame on both sides. You look you look at both sides, i think theres blame on both sides and i have no doubt about it you have some very bad people in the group but you also had people that were very fine people on both sides. Paul protests and counterprotests continue across the country t president is also taking a stand on the removal on Confederate Monuments in the United States tweeting on thursday, quote, sad to see the history and culture of our great country being ripped apart with the removal of our beautiful statutes and monuments. You cant change history but you can learn from it, robert e. Legionwall washington, who is next . Washington, jefferson, so foolish. Juan williams. Juan, good to see you. Thank you, paul. Paul i want to ask you about the Confederate Monument issue, does he have a point . I have a high regard for history and any kind of effort in the George Orwell sense of trying to rewrite history or propagandize history, you cannot erase the past. Issue is about monuments and monuments are for the living. We with our monuments give honor to the past, the question is what past are we celebrating here, one people about tearing apart the United States of america and denying our constitution in terms of so many of our principles but secondly, i think you have the idea that this is an effort that is now inspiring people on the what they call the altright, people that are neonazis, white supremacist, they have made this cause for themselves and now dividing the whole country. Paul so i agree with all of your points. Do you make some distinction, though, between in the past between somebody like a nathan yeah. Paul and washington . Absolutely. I noticed this people people like al sharpton, she doesnt want to pay for jefferson memorial. Thats wacky to me. In my mind jefferson is a founding father, somebody who put the nation together and not tore it apart and, yes, he had flaws but hes a man of his times and i think that he spoke about the whole notion of liberty and equality for all as well. Paul if you were in the city council would you have vote today rename that park and take down a lee statute . Yes, i would have. Not only would i have done it but i notice his great grandson that lee was about uniting the United States. Specially after the civil war. Thats clear. I dont think that lee would be about, oh, no, lets keep this about the divisive monument. Paul is it a smart thing to be fighting about these things . Its dividing us and giving the White Supremacists a cause celeb, somebody to rally and polarizing on the other side as well. We dont need that right now. It sounds paulie annish to you, paul, we need some sense of healing and positivity and understanding that we are americans, that across these bounds, one of many, thats our slogan, i think this is very important, i thought though, that given President Trumps actions, i think that i look back historically to someone like president eisenhower, in arkansas was trying to stop children from attending school after the 1950 brown decision, he said very quickly, im sending 101st airborne to enforce the law of the law of the land. Paul has obligation to speak with moral clarity. Thats what i think. Paul you dont need to say you have to speak clearly and thats the mistake he made in my view. Yeah. Paul particularly a president , republican president has to speak clearly about extremist on the right. Yeah. Paul in particular. Just like a democratic president has to speak that way to extremists on the left. I would agree completely. This is a moment where you have to say it goes beyond politics and stirring the base or anything of that. You think of, someone like president bush after 9 11 standing there, that brings us together. We were talking about healing. That reminds you, wait a second, i may have differences with paul gigot, but guess what, hes a foal american, we are in this together, our destiny, our prosperity relies on a sense of working together, cooperation and i just think weve broken down some of that fabric and im particularly struck that he didnt respond to antisemitism given his only family where you had people unable to walk out the front door of a synagogue because you had White Supremacists and neo nazis with guns this week. Paul if President Trump called you up and said, juan, i have a mess here, what should i do . What would you advise him to do . I think its pretty clear at this point that he should stand up and speak very clear to the american people, say maybe he made a mistake. Paul hes not good at that point. I think it will be good and i think that he could again not only in terms of speaking but in terms of action, we talked about the monuments, maybe say, you know, i have a different view, i have a better understanding of what has gone on and i think that this is a moment where we can come together as americans. Paul make distinctions between some of the Founding Fathers and maybe understand that some of these monuments were put up in the jim crowe era, for example, not all of them most of them were early 20th century as you say when the kkk was marching down pennsylvania avenue. Paul is his speech enough for trump at this stage . I think youre going to have lots of people who will be doubters, you asked me what can he do and this is a major step and i think speaking to the monuments in a constructive way might bring healing and looking forward down the road, what you have to see from trump is an effort to say you know what, this is a part of my political base, okay, i understand it but you know what, we dont need that political base, you heard that from the chair of the rnc this week and you heard that from mitch mcconnell, we dont want it. Paul all right, juan williams, thank you for being here. President trumps ties with the Business Community showing ties of strain amid the charlottesville fallout, can a republican president succeed without its support . Today, were out here with some big news about type 2 diabetes. You have type 2 diabetes, right . Yes. So let me ask you this. How does diabetes affect your heart . It doesnt, does it . Actually, it does. Type 2 diabetes can make you twice as likely to die from a cardiovascular event, like a heart attack or stroke. And with Heart Disease, your risk is even higher. You didnt know that. No. Yeah. But, wait, theres good news for adults who have type 2 diabetes and Heart Disease. Jardiance is the only type 2 diabetes pill with a lifesaving cardiovascular benefit. Paul amid the fallout this week from charlottesville comments President Trump was force toddies ban two adviser groups made up of Business Leaders and ceos, the president said wednesday afternoon that he would end both the measuring council and strategic and policy forum he had con veeped to advise him on economic policy. 11 members had already resigned from the councils by the time of his announcement. Lets bring in wall street journal columnist and editor dan henninger, kim strassel and assistant page editorial James Freeman. The president issued a statement on monday that condemned in no Uncertain Terms the neo nazis. The damage is done and the issue is over and the president on his own reopened it up, opened the debate on tuesday with his comments. Why . Why do that . Because this is donald trump. This is what he does. Is as if he cannot resist a moment to way back in, double down, he doesnt like to have any criticism and when he is criticized he decides to just go back at it even harder. Paul so are you talking here, kim have some sense to it. Theres violence on the left as well as the right but that was not the time to do it. As you said, this has been finished, all hes done is reopen an entire new news cycle, lost the support of the Business Community, forced members of his own party in congress to distant himself from him and he could have put this behind him, he didnt. Paul james, i think it comes down to in part ego and pride. He doesnt like being criticized, he thinks he was right and he doesnt like having people say you need to read this and i think he chafed in reading it on monday and yet by doing this again he reopened the old wounds and i think made i mean, no matter kim makes a fair point but its an inadequate statement by the president of the United States. You have to speak clearly on issues like this and with moral clarity, he didnt. Yeah, i think its kind of a shame. We were looking at the video from the tuesday press conference if he had just stuck with the first six minutes which was actually a wonderful description of the problem of yeah. You cant get projects permitted or get the Environmental Impact statements done, et cetera, really it was a nice presentation but i think paul nobody noticed. Yeah, probably bothered by the double standard that violence one side is focused on, i get that, but he definitely aired in saying that there were very fine people on both sides. I think the very fine people who may support monuments for artistic or historical reasons did not show up to the klan protest. You know what, the statement of buying people on both sides it was a halfthought, halfdeveloped. Lets think to the president ial election, barack obama was running for president and he had a problem with this and the reverend wright said, very extreme things about white people off the charts, obama was associated with him. After he got in trouble on that issue, he pulled back and said, i have to give a major speech on my position on race in america. And he delivered that speech and it was a very strong speech. You could say it was believable or not, that was beyond the point. It got him back on track politically. And possibly donald trump needs to do that now, but the point is if you are president you simply cant make thoughts off the top of your head about a subject as volatile and as explosive as race in america. It is a nowin situation. I would say thats where just to note for the record, thats where it differed from president obama because it wasnt off the top of the head remark whereas mr. Obama had gotten to reverend wrights church for years. In terms of the Business Community, the initial point here, you know, this is not Donald Trumps base. So his base doesnt like big government, doesnt like big business, but if he wants to build a governing coalition, if he wants to get more done, obviously there are some natural allies. A lot of these business folks were always uncomfortable, didnt like the trade and immigration agenda but liked tax reform and deregulation. Paul the fact that they were there and already to participate gets to governing. You need to broaden your coalition. The goal is to get to 50 and not 23. You need the Business Community, right, kim, i think this is damaging, down with big business, its not part of his base, the truth is you may not need the fortune 50 ceos 500 ceos but you need part of coalition that loves you to death. You do need those fortune 500 ceos and the rest of the Business Community and one of the problems here because this is what you saw happen this week, once the ceo of merck resigned it was inevitable because of the pressure by the media and trump critics to say how can you justify testify sticking with him, this is going to problem Going Forward is President Trump gives critics a club to continue pushing president not just ceos but republicans in congress, how do you justify going along with his agenda, his priorities, they cant afford that right now at a time when republicans need to be unified because they dont have a lot of extra votes in congress to get any of this done. Paul all right, still ahead with pressure mounting on republicans who make progress on their agenda, leaders in congress are setting their sights on tax reform when they return from august break. So could a bill reach President Trumps desk by years end . We will ask ways and means chairman kevin brady next parodontax, the toothpaste that helps prevent bleeding gums. If you spit blood when you brush or floss you may have gum problems and could be on the journey to much worse. Help stop the journey of gum disease. Try parodontax toothpaste. Paul conservative groups are turning up the heat on members of congress, urging them to get to work on tax reform when they return from august break. Take a look at this ad. I was proud of my job as middle class making a better life for my daughter. But with more morning competition i got laid off. Americas tax code is so complicated, you cant be competitive. When i see congress trying to cut taxes for working family to the bring jabs back, i know how that matters. Paul earlier i spoke with house ways and means chairman kevin brady about the prospect for tax reform. Paul why is tax reform going to be different than the failure of healthcare . Everything is different on this. One, the white house, the house and senate made a deliberate effort to Work Together toward a unified single tax reform plan. Its bold, its balanced. Paul and it will have details . The White House House and senate will lay the framework out. The house ways and Means Committee will continue with the tax plan. I cant overemphasize how important and unusual it is to have the white house and house and Senate Working together on tax reform. Even in the reagan process that didnt happen. There are americans who defend obamacare and the Affordable Care act. There are not Many Americans who defend this tax code. You start with a different base. Paul there are a lot of people who defend their particular tax break. You have the border adjustment tax that you put in your draft worth a trillion dollars worth of ref knew because of hostility from the retailers and others. Where are you going to get that trillion dollars back. What you do see in healthcare was this case for health reform. My thinking is big changes require dig discussions in america. Having september and august to do this is critical, to your point. How do we continue to lower the rates . In the 30 years since president reagan, he would not recognize the code today. Its littered with special provisions because our rates are so high. Our working group with the senate and tax writerrers is to scrub those provisions and unleashing business for productivity in america. Paul you are saying this will be a reform that does take away tax loopholes and benefits for some people. Its not going to devolve into a near tax cut. A tax cut will help temporarily. Thats like putting super charged fuel in an old clunker of the car. It will go faster for some period of time, but it cant keep up with the new models on the road. Worldwide we are being left in the dust. Those provisions, by the way, they are there because our rates are so high. It will be competitive, industries have special provisions to make them competitive. Those things dont have the punch. They are not needed. Paul how low do you think that has to go. You have ireland at 12. 5 , britain at 17 how low does it have to go . At least medium or lower to be competitive. The 2322 rate. We are still working to lower it as far as we can go. Paul if you have 12. 5 in ireland and you are not down to 20 im not sure you are getting enough bang for the buck for Companies Like apple and pfizer to move their operation and cash back here. Tying the lowest rates with the greatest amount of expensing. Software, telling incredibly pro growth as well. Keeping things that reward innovation and allow companies to bring profits back. Often we talk about wanting to leap frog into the top three most of competitive places on the planet. All those elements are critical to us. Paul many subchapter ss pay at the personal rate at 39. 6 . How low does that have to go. Some say it has to be parity with the corporate rate . I dont believe so. But i think we need to deliver an equal tax cut for our local businesses. Regardless of how you are structured, whether you are a mom and pop i think we need to lower those taxes equally for all those job creators. So much of our growth is included in both side of that linger. I say drive the rates down as low as we can regardless of the type of business you are structured at. Paul its 25 or 20 you could live with that . I could. Thats an equal thanks cut. For our nonc corporations who have so much view, in the past they have been left behind. And we are not going to do that this time. Paul state and local Tax Deduction is on the table. Is it going to stay there . I am hopeful. Under the current tax code, some can use that deduction. We are proposing lower rates for everybody so everyone gets help, whether its for state and local tacks, getting your kids in college, putting your mom in a nursing home. Give people the ability to do what they need to do. Paul terror in spain. I go with anoro. Go your own way copd tries to say, go this way. I say, ill go my own way with anoro. But whoever is responsible should know the United States of america together with our allies will find and punish those responsible and drive the evil of radical islamic terror from the face of the earth. Paul Vice President mike pence reacting to the terror attacks in spain. The Islamic State is claiming responsibility for the attack in barcelona which occurred in the heart spains largest city. It killed 13 people and injured scores others. Mary kissel joins us with more. We had similarstyle attacks in france, u. K. And germany, now spain. What does this tell us about how the threat is evolving in europe. It says when we take back territory in iraq and syria, its doing nothing to eliminate the threat from jihadist groups. The threat is migrating. There was a morocco connection. You have a libyan connection to the attack in manchester. And it shows how difficult it is to hardened targets. This was an attack on a soft target tourist area. Paul you are not saying we should stop in iraq and syria, because one of the things isis does to inspire people is to say we can hold this caliphate. We are the future. One of the reasons to take part territory take back territory. These groups learn from each other. Paul they do learn from each other. But what about the problem of letting them say in syria and iraq, we are controlling this territory . That make them more able to inspire these people and radicalize people in other countries. It would be a silly argument to say lets leave them in syria and iraq. But i think we are not focusing on how the threat migrated. When was the last time you heard the white house or pentagon come out and give a long speech. Whats your strategy in libya . I think its an evolving problem. Earlier this week the former head of mi5 lord evans gave an interview on this. He said we are facing what he thick is a generational threat, 2030 years. Because the Islamic State jihadists are in their 20s and 30s. Spain went delight with the bask separatists for 3040 years and eventually the threat passes on. But now we are dealing with a lone wolf attack. They didnt even have a permit for a big enough truck they were going to try to use. Its going to be difficult to guard against that sort of thing. But these people are getting their directive from i. S. , their technicians, philosophical stuff they put on the internet. Spain puts people in jail for putting violent things on the internet. They put a rapper in jail for a year for threatening to blow up the king with a cake bomb. Paul this could have been a lot worse because the terrorists seemed to have blown themselves up before the attack trying to assemble a bomb. The bomb in chelsea in the middle of manhattan. The terrorists put the bomb inside of a big trash container and that absorbed a large part of the blast. We talk a lot about stopping dangerous immigration into places like germany or here in the United States. Trump has made that such a big issue. A lot of these attackers are Second Generation sittens. So that makes it more difficult for the Security Forces to keep track of them. Where they have been and who they are tucking to. In a truck attack, if you can go out and rent a truck. Its not like you have to build a bomb and maybe the neighbors will see you bringing it into your home. The terror groups, they analyze these attacks, they give hints. Inspire magazine said that was well done. Good had guns in the car, too. Next time here are some ways maybe you can kill more people. Dan is right. This is a generational issue. Airports are making everyone that goes through check against the data base. They have extraordinarily long lines. They need better data about people buying bomb material. Its a struggle that has to be fought over a long period of time. Paul is coal making a comeback in the United States . My administration is putting an end to the war on coal. That is why we are also going to limb state in jobkilling regulations and lift the restrictions on the production of American Energy including shale, oil, natural gas, and beautiful clean coal. We are going to put our miners back to work. Our miners are going back to work folks. Paul President Trump is delivering on at least one campaign promise. After the obama administrations allout assault on fossil fuels, weekly Coal Production is up 15 nationwide and coal exports up 58 in the First Quarter from a year ago. Alicia finley joins us with more. This is a fascinating story. I think one aspect is the deregulation. I dont think people realized how suppressed the industry were until a lot of the rules that were intended to force the shutdown of coal plants and prevent the building of new coal plants. Paul there were two stages. The first obama rules went after new coal plants. Then the Clean Power Plan said well stop try to put existing plants out of business. Then they went after the exports. Basically by freezing leases on federal land which is where a lot of the coal which is very economic and competitive, where that was coming from and exported abroad. Paul these rules are starting to be rolled back. Some are repealed all together. The coleman was save stayed by the Supreme Court last march. Last summer is when you start seeing West Virginia, kentucky, new mexico have a resurgence . Coal production. It didnt start in which and montana until early this year until regulations were stayed. Paul one of the most of intriguing side of this is the exports are going to europe. Europe claims to be its against climate change. They dislike fossil fuels, they subsidize heavily solar, wind and bio mass. They tried to shut down in germany and elsewhere, Nuclear Power. So why are they importing coal . They need something to back up the renewable energy. When they have a cold snap or their Nuclear Power plants go down, they need coal. This a 200 increase to germany and france. Paul a lot. And the point is that you need that base load power to be able to keep the lights on, when you want to get the lights on. Businesses and consumers like the lights to go on when you flip a switch. A little luxury, you know. Paul kim, what do you make of this as a political matter . I guess if you were the administration, you would say we are fulfilling a promise. Hopefully what it means is all the shellacking the president has received from the Environmental Community and his critics about pulling out of paris and staying a lot of these rules, this is the defense. This is the positive way he goes back at this and says my vow was to create jobs and this is tangible proof im doing so. I would note from a political point of view, states like West Virginia and others, these are important in elections. Ohio and pennsylvania where you have seen some of this return of jobs. This is people, voters and states that matter to republicans that are actually seeing taken economy get back on track because of republican leadership. Paul it doesnt mean coal will ever go back to being as dominant as it was. Natural gas is competing for electric power generation. But it does suggest coal can have some kind of a bigger role than president obama wanted it to take in the community. Liberals accuse conservatives of being antigovernment. We dont hate government. What we hate is governments strangling the private sector and creating rules that for bid Economic Activity to take place. Coal is producing jobs for american people. Paul if coal cant compete, so be it. Paul when we come back, hits and misses of the week. Flonase outperforms the 1 nondrowsy allergy pill. It helps block 6 key inflammatory substances that cause symptoms. Pills block one and 6 is greater than 1. Flonase changes everything. That Airline Credit card yout . Have. It could be better. Is this why you asked me to coffee . Well yeah. But also to catchup. Whats in your wallet . Paul time for our hits and misses of the week. It isnt easy to couple with something nice to say about the United States postal service. But this is a huge hit for the total eclipse of the sun stamp. Its got a black disk that responds to the heat your finger. When you put your finger on the disk it disappears to display the moon.
