Dr. Faucis warning that things are going to get worse is a jarring contrast to what the president told the public just yesterday. At this moment there were 546 confirmed cases of coronavirus with 22 deaths, think about that. Well, here is what dr. Fauci had to say about that. People always say, well, the flu does this, the flu does that. The flu has a more at that time of 0. 1 . This has a mortality of ten times that. Experts believe that the Novel Coronavirus is not only deadlier than the flu, it could also be more easily transmissible than the common flu. States of emergency have now been declared in 19 states. Students that live inside the containment zone but go to school outside the containment zone are free to go to school. At the same time those who live outside the containment zone but their school is in it cannot go to school. Well, were telling people based on the guidance were getting from the Public Health professionals at the county and at the time level that Senior Citizens above 80 and those with compromised health situations, they should do their best to stay at home as much as possible. How many people in new rochelle have coronavirus as of now as far as you know . The numbers i got today were 108 people in Westchester County as a whole. 92 of those are new rochelle. And they all seem to be still in and around that original cluster at the synagogue at the northern end of the city. I mean, whats the reason you think that this big cluster is in new rochelle . Is it because somebody who had it went to beth israel synagogue, i might have the name wrong, at a time when a lot of people were there and thats how the infection spread . Yes, it was young israel of new rochelle. There was a gentleman, they call the index case, who had the virus. He went to three separate events a couple of weekends ago, one was a funeral, one was a bat mitzvah and one was a general service. Thats a synagogue of up to a thousand people, men, women, and children. And thats why we think the infection were told the infection seems to be centered in that area. Those folks have been quarantined since about a week ago, and will stay that way until saturday. That was the effort to try to contain it as best as possible from the health officials. Cnns erica hill spoke with one new rochelle resident today who is not feeling well, does not want to be a Public Health threat but cannot get any information about testing. How can the containment zone be effective if people dont know what to do if they believe theyre showing symptoms . What should this person do . We have been told by both county and state officials, if youre feeling like you might have something similar to this disease, you should first call your personal physician and do not go to the emergency room unannounced. Then you should have your physician set up a visit for you to the emergency room. At the emergency room theyll take the steps necessary to protect both the workers and other people in the hospital, the Health Care Professionals. Then from there the county and state Health Department will be notified and testing will be scheduled. Look, i wish there was more testing available. Theres supposed to be a Testing Center opening here soon according to the governor. The more testing we can get done and the quicker we can get that, the better, because youre right, people are concerned, and they want to be able to see if they have this or not. It just seems odd to me because we keep hearing from the white house that millions of testing kits are getting out there and you are in the biggest cluster in the United States and youre telling me that you dont have the testing kits you need. What im saying is that i dont know that we have as many as we need. Obviously the city is not doing the testing ourselves so im really depending on the state and the county. But i dont think theres any secret to the fact that there havent been enough testing kits for some time now. And i think most of the testing thats been done in new rochelle has been done on the people in this synagogue that had contact with the index patient. So obviously with a cluster like this, with new rochelle being sort of the epicenter of the virus in not only the state but maybe outside of washington, the country, we would like to see as many testing kits and as much testing as is available. Schools are heeding advice to limit inperson interaction with a disease that can move quickly. Seriously looking at this kind of mitigation, they call it social distancing, but its common sense stuff. You dont want to go to a massive gathering particularly if youre a vulnerable person. Reporter k12 schools are temporarily closing in some districts across the country including Elk Grove Unified School district in california and north shore School District in western washington which is moving Classes Online. Social distancing, as your reporter talked about, is one of the key ways we can start mitigating the spread of an epidemic. Were definitely in the midst of an epidemic here in seattle. Its kind of a ghost town outside. And so we need to be able to do things that limit people congregating and facilitating the spreading of the virus. Doctor, should more universities and School Systems consider canceling inperson classes or do you think some of them might be overreacting . I think they have to consider it very strongly. When we look at this virus and the spread, and we compare ourselves to other countries like china, for instance, and we see how that new case curve has flattened out there, thats the result of very authoritarian, very strong measures that keep people away from other people. Were not going to do that here. So i think we need to be more aggressive in the way we do things in our culture, in our norms. Part of that is restricting large gatherings. The World Health Organization finally declared the Novel Coronavirus outbreak a pandemic. Youre on the front lines of this outbreak in the u. S. Do you think that its too late in the sense that the World Health Organization took a long time to declare the pandemic or does it not really matter that much . To be honest with you, it doesnt really matter that much. On the ground what were dealing with right now are people who are infected and with the Community Transmission that were having here up and down the west coast and moving inland now. Whether or not its happening in mongolia and argentina probably matters less than its happening on the east side of seattle and down in the peninsula and over in the olympics. So what were having to do right now is make sure we have the tools and information and ventilators and test kits available for people wherever they are in our part of the world. Dr. Phillips, axios is reporting that congress inhouse doctor told capitol hill staffers that he expects 70 to 150 million americans will contract the coronavirus. Dr. Anthony fauci, the top Infectious Disease specialist, said 1 is the likely fatality rate, thats 700,000 deaths. Is that a reasonable estimate, or is that a worst Case Scenario . I think we need to start looking at things in terms of best Case Scenarios, medium, and worst. Theres concentric circles of how bad this thing will get. For weeks weve seen people trying to throw estimates out there of 20 to 70 of the worlds population. Contracting it. Not dying from it. Contracting it. Thats one of the tricky parts about the mortality rate that people need to clarify when they speak about it. Is it the mortality rate of the general public or those who contract it . Regardless, we wont know the answers until this is over. And get testing kits out there to know how prevalent it is. Yeah, and even the kits, we can have all the nasal swabs and test tubes in the world but until we get the machines, the right primers and context, if you chemicals, if you will, to run those tests, closer to the patient, were still at a disadvantage. Reporter im Brynn Gingras in new rochelle, new york, and this is cnn. Cnn is being told that medical staff where illprepared and illequipped and the first evacuees from wuhan, china landed. A Different Group of workers also lacked proper gear. Cnns drew griffin reports for us. They handled hundreds of people who may have been exposed to the Novel Coronavirus. Reporter when the first evacuees landed at Travis Air Force base from wuhan, china, they were met by a u. S. Government team equipped and ready to handle americans who may have been exposed to the deadly coronavirus. Throughout their quarantine we will be following cdc guidance for infection control. Reporter but that was not the case according to three Health Care Professionals who worked with the quarantined passengers. All three tell cnn medical staff were illprepared, not given proper personal protective equipment, and all three say the lapse could have led to a possible spread of the virus if any of the passengers carried covid19 back with them from china. Among the complaints, no protective clothe. Inadequate face masks used to prevent dust, not airborne germs. They say even cleaning was inadequate. Baby wipes used to clean surfaces instead of medical grade antibacteria wipes. Although advised to maintain a sixfeet distance between themselves and evacuees, two of the sources say during the 14day quarantine, that rule was not followed. Failure to follow the proper procedures is troubling to Infectious Disease experts, especially since it is believed even people showing no symptoms can spread this virus. We think that at least some people never show infection at all, never show symptoms of the infection, but they can spread the disease to others. Reporter cnn obtained this afteraction report filed with the department of headlight and Human Services by a disaster worker stating that when the worker complained about the lack of protective equipment the worker was told, if you dont feel comfortable, well find another job for you. Any time you have an epidemic with a new pathogen, youre always going to have missteps. The key is making sure those missteps are not repeated over and over again. Reporter the sources speaking to cnn echo concerns raised by a whistleblower from the u. S. Department of headlight and Human Services who filed a complaint about a Different Group of workers, saying more than a dozen people who worked with the First Americans s evacuated from china were sent into quarantined areas without personal protective equipment, training, or experience. The department of health and Human Services has launched an investigation into the complaints to include what protocols and procedures were followed at both facilities. Its really a disaster if we dont properly protect our Health Care Workers. If they get sick, not only are they no longer able to care for patients, but also they can transmit the virus in their communities. So theres kind of a double threat to not caring for our health care force. Reporter an even bigger concern to the sources speaking to cnn is the possibility that workers could have easily transmitted the virus outside Travis Air Force base, claiming they left the quarantine area every day with no restrictions, wearing the same clothes, going straight to a starbucks on base, to local hotels, some even enjoying dayoff field trips to San Francisco Tourist Spots including alcatraz island. Theyre spraying down streets with bleach in china, one source told cnn, and we were out there wearing our uniforms. Californias first suspected Community Spread illness took place near Travis Air Force base. Its still unclear how that person contracted the virus. Jake, the quarantined workers returned to their civilian jobs. None have developed symptoms nor have they been tested for coronavirus. Jake . Drew griffin, thank you for that. Were back with dr. I find it stunning personally to hear these First Responders went into this situation without the proper training and gear. Its been really interesting over the past few years that we have taken what we used to consider skilled professionals that are there, prepared to help us in case of an emergency, and somehow labeled them as members of a bureaucratic state. And so i think actually recognizing that we have skilled professionals from places like the cdc and from our Public Health infrastructure there to help us in case of an emergency, and we depend on that skill set. So it just is disheartening to me to not have that skill set be recognized and honored and drawn upon and be ready and available for when its needed. And dr. Phillips, this actually reminds me of a story i broke a few days ago, a First Responder in kirkland, washington telling me he was in the life care center, the nursing home where at least 19 patients have died, one of the other clusters, a week ago, to this day, workers there, weeks into this crisis, didnt have the proper gear, werent wearing the proper ppe. How can this be so incompensatey run . Its another example that the public needs to understand that we need more protection. Theres a vulnerable population of older patients and those with comorbidities. Theres also those who are the most valuable to society, our firefighters, our police. I think well soon find our Health Care Workers are an incredibly valuable commodity. If we start losing those folks in this fight, were going to be at a real disadvantage. So i would like to know some more concrete steps from hhs. What is the exact pathway for that equipment to get to me . I have friends working in hospitals where they are running out of n95 masks. There are stories that are trickling in over social media and everywhere else around the country that despite whats being said, we dont have the equipment. We need answers. And dr. Compton phillips, we have some breaking news, the acting Homeland Security deputy secretary, ken koochcuccinelli, travel restrictions for europe are under discussion. Is this the right thing to do given outbreaks in places like italy . Its really hard to, you know, make sure that were not getting virus from abroad and put a lot of energy there while we have the virus here on our own shores. And i think making sure that we devote energy and resources to exactly what dr. Phillips was just talking about, making sure we have the appropriate ppe gear available for every Health Care Worker and First Responder, so that our nurses and our doctors and our firefighters and our policemen can actually do their job and not be vectors for transmission, i think for us being able to manufacture test kits, that is a great use of energy. But thinking about how do we disrupt the rest of the economy thats still going on through closing the borders down, the horse is already out of the barn. Its already here, do you agree with that, dr. Phillips . Absolutely, its a brilliant answer. There are so many different aspects to this viral outbreak that go far beyond the infection with the virus. The resources we may lose from our First Responders to our paramedics to just hospital beds in general, all of that is going to have a significant trickledown effect on other people who dont even get the virus. One of the things that has me concerned about school closings, and theyre necessary, 20 million american kids, thats the only good meal they get every day. And we have to consider that were going to see nutritional deficiencies in young kids who arent getting food. The trickledown effects are vast. There are people looking at it. But we need more. Poll after poll, including exit polls, show that a Strong Majority of the American People support our progressive agenda. That was senator Bernie Sanders earlier today making clear he has no plans to drop out of the democratic president ial contest after his rival Vice President joe biden handily won four out of six states during last nights super tuesday contest. Right now biden is ahead by more than 100 delegates. At one point today sanders seems to admit he knows why biden is winning. We are losing the debate over electability. I cannot tell you how many people our campaign has spoken to who have said, and i quote, i like what your Campaign Stands for, i agree with what your Campaign Stands for, but im going to vote for joe biden because i think joe is the best candidate to defeat donald trump. Sanders base seems to be getting smaller, people who voted for him in 2016 are voting for biden now. Yeah, he did worse in michigan, washington, and idaho than he did in 2016. Thats because this revolution that hes promised for so long, made up of young and nontraditional voters, are not showing up. Thats why hes not doing well. I dont understand why he feels he needs to dictate to joe biden how to win. The coalition that joe biden is putting together of suburban voters, africanamericans, older voters, is how you win a general election. Now hes going to go to a debate and try to push biden to the left which would alienate those voters makes no sense to me. One key constituency that was key to president obamas election in 2008 and 2012 is young voters. Lets play that sound of sanders talking about the young voters. In order to win in the future, the democratic establishment needs to win the voters who represent the future of our country. And you must speak to the issues of concern to them. And not only do young voters overwhelmingly back Bernie Sanders. Overwhelmingly, huge numbers. Even though they voted in large numbers for hillary clinton, they did not turn out in the 2016 general election in the numbers that would have potentially made the difference in an incredible close election. What i read was a very different tone from senator sanders compared to last week, when the refrain of his press conference is, joe is going to have to explain, and he attacked him for the iraq war, his position on social security, a host of issues. This time it was, joe, what are you going to do . It did seem like he was symbolically passing the torch and influence joe bidens platform and ensure he is going to bring along young voters who are skeptical about what a joe biden candidacy means for priorities that remain very popular not just among liberals and progressives but still the broader democratic electorate if not voters whose voices will absolutely matter if they dont feel energized to get behind joe biden in a general election. We also heard Vice President biden last night in his remarks in philadelphia extend an olive branch to sanders and his supporters. We need you, we want you. I think that speech last night was the first step in that process. Well have to see during that debate how contentious it gets or whether theyre able to come together with sort of a joint platform that not only brings alo along some of the sanders voters and also brings along the suburban voters.
