Is the United States and the western world, are we doing enough to top these kinds of attacks . I think were doing the right things. We just have to intensify the effort. Good morning, we are so good to be with you this morning, christi paul. A little different this morning, im victor blackwell. We are live in cleveland, the site of the Republican National convention. Good morning to you. Were following three major stories. Up first in a matter of hours. Well get a look at the republican presumptive president ial ticket. Donald trump is about to introduce his running mate mike pence. Trump had lastminute second thoughts about that decision. And then hope to be the next commander in chief. Theres violence in turkey that weve been watching all night. A bloody coup attempt by a faction of its military have left at least 90 dead, we understand. Theres a lot of uncertainty. At the moment, who is in control of these two u. S. Nato allies. Of course, continuing coverage. New terror raids and arrests overnight as isis is he it inspired the truck rampage in nice, that killed 84 people, two of them american. First toky, the president reaccept erdogan said it has plunged that country into a night of chaos. [ gunfire ] list ton they hail of gunfire in istanbul. By initially promising, victor, the president does seem to be in control. How all encompassing of course that control remains to be seen. I just want to take you back to how all of this unfolded. Take a look. Greensburg gunfire ]. 11 25 p. M. Friday local time. The Turkish Military said in a statement that had had taken control of the country and imposed martial law. 12 26 a. M. Reporter around 3 20 a. M. , turkish president erdogan lands at the airport. Turkeys deputy Prime Minister talks to cnn on the phone . Who is in control now in turkey . Well, there has been a fair coup attempt. Government is in full control. Theres still some rogue reporter 6 30 a. M. , at doran on saturday, president erdogan addresses a large crowd. He calls the coup attempt treason and says his golf vernm is in control. Translator we will stand firm we will not compromise. Reporter these incredible scenes from Istanbuls Bosphorus bridge, as soldiers surrendering en masse, walking away from tanks and abandons their posts. And in ankara, pictures of serious damage to the turkish parties. They have always retained the right for what they call political instability. And the country is still reeling from a series of isis attacks across the border in syria and iraq. The very reasons that made erdogan vulnerable to the two attempts, are the reasons why the u. S. And other nato allies have been working so nervously overnight to see how this plays out. They need stability in turkey. And president erdogan, for his future needs to deliver it, victor and christi. Nima elbagir there in nice. Report on turkey. Doing it in the Early Morning hours of this turkish coup, the turkish president was forced to use facetime on his cell phone in an attempt to rally the coup. This is a remarkable moment, watch. Translator i want to encourage my people to the streets and invite them to the airports. And together as people gather, show them by letting them come with their tanks. To see what theyre going to do. Do it right there to the people. Power above the people i have never seen. All right, joining us now to expand this conversation cnn military analyst Lieutenant Colonel rick francona, former military attache. And journalist in istanbul. Mustafa, i want to start with you, there is sometimes, a space between what we saw a failed doo coup, and the government being in control. You can give us the degree to which the erdogan government is in control there. Erdogan government are in fuel control. Theres no doubt that this coup has been suppressed or diverted. Its just turned out this was not a military takeover, it was a coup within the military. And certain elements between the air forces. But the rest of the military, and the government and the police and the intelligence of other state institutions, so the coup we could say in turkey its the democratic system is safe and secure. One more thing, the people went on the streets to really go up against the coup. Not just the government but the secular position also stayed with the government on this issue. So, i think we have given a test of the country. We have flawed democracy. But still democracy much better than the military takeover. We did see the Opposition Forces come out and say they stand behind the democratically elected government. Let me come to you, turkey is very important to the u. S. And europe, as this fight continues against isis there. Put into context there the dilemma that the u. S. Finds itself in with this strong man who isnt so strong . Well a coup in turkey would have been a real problem for our efforts against isis. As you mentioned, there are a couple of other bases north of Syrian Border really give this an advantage, conducting air strikes that close. Now, had the coup succeeded, we would have faced a political dilemma in the United States because our laws are very specific. The security act of 1961 requires us not to support country, governments that have come to power, through military coup. So, we would have faced a political crisis there. Fortunately, that didnt happen. And i want to make a couple of points what mustafa is exactly right. This was not the Turkish Military. The Turkish Military has intervened in the past but when they do, its the entire institution of the Turkish Military. This is small faction, being from the start, when president erdogan called out his people to go to the streets. That was only the matter of the coup. It was only a matter of how long it would communicate. But the United States military was looking to leave when we saw the initial coup falter because this allowed us to continue operations i understand operations were only stopped for about a half an hour. All right. Mustafa, let me come back to you, the next 24 to 72 hours, of course, will be crucial. Were already seeing arrests of members of military. More than 1500 arrested thus far. And the government will continue to purge those who tried to create this coup. What do you expect the next 72 hours will look like . Well, the government condemned the coup, arrested the coup, but also pointed to the culprits, as i perceive it, that group an ally of the government has now turned bitter of the government. Its also rumored they have people in the military, they have officers in the movements. And now behind the coup and as an enemy of the state. Therefore, we will see arrests of all of these not only officers but also maybe some of their allies who are members. And we just heard the germans who have denounced this they got orders that they should leave the country. So in a very tense scene, of course, the country has likely defended itself against a coup like Something Like that but also a group which has to be very precise because of all of the risk for violating Civil Liberties and turkeys nonimmigrant states. So the government has a right, i think, to extend itself against this obviously threat, for whichever obviously has deep roots. But also this should not turn into a witch hunt as we head in turkish history. Let me just update the numbers were getting in now. 161 dead overnight. And now 2,839 members of the Turkish Military detained. Again, 161 dead. Now, 2,839 detained. Mustafa akyol, our journalist there, and retired colonel francona. Well continue our conversations throughout the morning. Meanwhile, we have breaking news out of france this morning. Isis claiming it inspired the truck driver to plow through that crowd. Breaking news this morning, isis now claims it inspired the terror attack in france that killed 84 people on thursday. And isislinked media agency is calling the truck driver an isis soldiers who targeted nationals of Coalition Countries fighting isis. And the Prosecutions Office said five people are in custody this morning. One of those people is the attackers exwife. Joining us now, Clarissa Ward. Clarissa, we have heard isis make claims before. Never before i believe have we heard them take responsibility for inspiring Something Like this. Its very different. What you can tell us about what we know regarding the drivers possible connection to isis. Reporter okay. So heres what we know, christi, we know that a mock news agency which is essentially a mouthpiece for isis has come forward and said this man is an Islamic State soldier who answered the call for attacks. Also in isis the radio said it was the works of an isis soldier and warned crusader states about many more attacks in the future. But as you mentioned, the wording of this definitely leaves isis with a little bit of wiggle room. Did they actually organize the attack or did they inspire it . Was it conceived up by them, or are they just taking credit for it . Of course, isis is an extremely organization and did they wait and weigh in and say, yes, essentially he was a soldier of the caliphate and take control of the attack. Its not clear whether any direct links, direct correlation, so far, authorities dont have any indication that there was. And french media reports say, family and friends say, this man was not a practices muslim. That he was not interested in religion and was a deeply troubled individual. Right now in front of the promenade, police are getting ready to open this up again after that brutal, horrifying attack in which 84 people were killed. Cnn spoke to the deputy mayor earlier. Because its been a really rapid and major scene up. The deputy mayor said, listen, this is an act of defiance to show terrorists that we wont be cowed. Were trying to clean this up. The site of the 2016 Republican National convention. Things get started on monday. But were here, a couple of days early. And we know that donald trump is in just a few hours going to introduce his president ial pick indiana governor mike pence. But reporting from our dana bash sheds some light on the uncertainty surrounding that decision. A source tells cnn that trump was not made sure he made the right choice, even after hed flown the governor to new york city. Were hearing that pence was not his first choice . No, it might have been governor chris christie. Christie close with trump. At the end of the day it was pence. Pence will appear at a News Conference later this morning. This really seemed to go down to the wire. Thursday evening, he told another network he still had not made a final decision. Pence had until friday to recall his papers to run for governor of indiana. Trump officially offering pence the position sometime on thursday. Leading up to the decision. You remember, we saw trump had his finalists on the pain trail. Newt beginning rim. New Jersey Governor Chris Christie and pence was out with trump as well. Sources telling cnn that there was some secondguessing from trump, even after he made the decision. Trump ultimately swayed by his children who felt pence was the right political choice. I had spoken to another republican insider some uneasy with trump and his rhetoric. They seemed to be pleased with pence. One gop activist saying pence brings balance to the ticket. Pence appeals to tea partiers and to evangelicals. Although he has disagreed with trump in the past on some issues, now he says hes looking forward to being his Vice President. Im excited. Im excited to be joining the ticket tomorrow with donald trump. I think hell abe great president. And i look forward to carrying his message all across this country and the months ahead and serving with him in the next administration. Victor, it should be noted and as im sure you know, pence absolutely endorsed ted cruz during the primaries. Dan senior who once served as a Senior Adviser to mitt romneys president ial campaign suggested on friday that pence once found trumps rhetoric unacceptable. I want to read a tweet that senior sent out basically says the following, it says based on someone who had it says, its disorienting to have commiserated with someone about how he was unacceptable and then to see that someone become trumps vp. Pence will be returning to indiana for a welcome home rally, victor. Jason carroll for us there. Jason, thank you so much. And we are going to have more on that in just a moment, in terms of the Vice President s choice, or the choice for Vice President , i should say. Were going to have a Panel Discussion on that. Also breaking news in turkey, a u. S. Ally badly shaken after a coup killing a hundred people and thousands and thousands of arrests. Many bombing which is left at least 165 people dead and more than 1,000 injured. Crowds cheering here as pro Government Troops moved in to put down the rebellion. Nearly 3,000 military personnel suspected of being behind the uprising are now in custody. As troops exited their tanks, surrendered en masse. As president erdogan rushed back from a resort to assert his authority on youtubes social media. And urged the turkish people to stand up to the, quote, treason. Translator i want to encourage my people to the streets and invite them to the airports. And together, as people gather, show them by letting them come with their tanks to see what theyre going to do. Do it right there to the people. Power above the people i have never seen. Now the next 24 to 48 hours will be critical. The Turkish Parliament meets in a few hours to consider how to move forward after last nights attempted coup. Were live in cleveland, a few hours away from a live event will donald trump will introduce his new running mate indiana governor mike pence. As soon as he announced his choice on twitter, what a reaction. And it was mixed within their own party. Take a look, Arizona Governor jeff flake aplotting it there is nobody in politics i respect more than mike pence. He is a valued friend and a good conservative who will get country moving in the right direction. And as sean spicer. And matt stevens, contributor to politics 365. We thank you for being here. Scotty, i want to get to news that we are hearing this morning. That governor mike pence saying, just last night, he agreed with Donald Trumps talk to ban muslims in countries with heavy terrorist activity and in the u. S. That is in direct reversal from ma he had said back in december. Explain to us how it seems that mike pence is morphing into Donald Trumps values. And isnt that a little difficult if youre hoping hes going to pull in some of the establishment. Well, i dont think you have to ever look at it that president and Vice President have to be 100 on the same page. But this is a reversal. This is. When they sat down and talked about the pose and justification forever it i think is all that mattered. All we heard out of those headlines is about the muslim ban. Its only that its nonu. S. Citizens and it would only be temporary. Listen, i think governor spence kind of like the peptobismol candidate here. Neighbor might have heartburn after this very contentious primary season, twitter and social media. This kind of calmed them down. I think governor pence is able to look at get more depth behind the Trump Campaign including this policy right here. Matt, what do you make of the news this morning . Im very surprised that he picked mike pence. If we want to talk about peptobismol, i think mike pence was the belt of the worst choices for donald trump. Im going to be very interested to see how the Clinton Campaign reacts to this. How they campaign against trump now that he has pence on his ticket and he will now have to answer for pences record both as governor and in indiana. What do you think the strategy will be now that she knows who the team is on the republican side . Well, i think that Hillary Clinton will thousand be able to what shell have to do is shell know that theyre going to hit her the same way that theyre going to hit him, which is completely on the record. Donald trump really has no political record at all. Hes able to say some things that have gone unchecked because he simply didnt have the record but mike pence does have that record. I would expect to see a lot of looking back at mike pences radio talk show. As well as his record in congress. And of course, his record in indiana as the governor, particularly with the religious freedom bill which is pretty much how a lot of people know mike pence, if they even know him outside of indiana. I want to talk about some unfavorables on both sides the aisle. We just got numbers there, in florida, 58 have unfairable view of Hillary Clinton. And 61 have unfavorable true of donald trump. When you look at those, does it make that vp choice that more pivotal . Absolutely. I love that you brought up points and records of these candidates for somebody like donald trump who doesnt have a political history. And governor pence has probably one of the best records when you look at indiana, hes decreased unemployment. Created 130,000 jobs since 2013. The economic developments that hes done in inis phenomenal. And by far, a lot more comparable, from the past, as a senator that might be running for Vice President for hillary. I think were going to see a team more in this election season than weve seen in the past. Now that we know that Hillary Clinton is in d. C. Shes been having an awful lot of conversations with people. Everybody is waiting to see what her vp choice will be. Is there any choice who donald trump has chosen will influence who she chooses. As well as again, if you look at the unfavorable numbers. What does she have to do . What must her choice reflect . I think what Hillary Clinton has shown in his campaign so far is pretty much having a steady hand. I think thats really important. I dont think that mike pence will impact her decision much. I think her camp has probably been thinking about their Vice President ial camp for so long. And realizing that the people are scrutinizing her every move. I think that Hillary Clinton is going to stay focused on the issues, specifically over the issues of negative press that donald trump has created in the past 13 months. She and whomever her Vice President s pick will have a lot to work with, twhauns person is announced, and they will hit that the final stage of the campaign trail between now and election day. Matt stevens. And scottie, good to have you in person. Thank you. Lets talk security here at the convention. Because there are more than 70 items that are banned from the convention and surrounding area. Not on that list of banned items. A gun. Its sparking concerns ahead of protesters and ahead of major days of protests. One group issuing an ominous warning. Well talk about that. Welcome back. Were live here in cleveland this morning. Where the Republican National convention is just a couple days away now. But Security Fears are already mounting with the terror attack in france, coupled with tensions and violence across the country. Authorities here are increasing Police Presence around the event zone, as one would expect. Specifically the quicken loans arena where the republican delegates will be. Thousands of officers will be on patrol at the convention. And this is in anticipation of several antitrump protest groups expected to rally and march across the city in the next few days answer those groups will be greeted with Trump Supporters and officials fear that could be a recipe for violence. Watch. I am concerned about the prospect of demonstrations getting out of hand. I am concerned about the possibility of violence. We have, within dhs, some 3,000 personnel that will be dedicated to the security of the Republican National convention and the democratic National Convention each. And some say now that what makes matters worse is that ohio has the open carry gun law here, having the bikers for trump group telling cnn that the streets of cleveland could turn into the ok corral. Lets bring in gone reed, cnn antitrust expert. And lets talk about guns first. Theres a long list of things that people cannot bring into the convention zone, this perimeter. I cant bring a tennis ball. I cant bring a whole pineapple, but i can strap an ak47 to my back . Yeah, in certain venues, the whole venue around quicken loans arena, you cannot. A 28page protocol telling them what they can and cannot do. Deescalation techniques. Voluntary compliance, on all of those issues, so but is it a sensitive issue . Absolutely. Law enforcement and people carrying guns, thats sensitive. Are you concerned, because there are many groups. Several groups have said, they will come with weapons. You see what weve watched over the last few years, outside of many of the trump rallies . Yes. They are concerned. Whenever you have people that are carrying firearms there can be accidents. It can be issues involves youre having Police Officers carrying fire arms and civilians. Sometimes not the best recipe. Thats why Law Enforcement trains over the years. Secret service taking the lead. And cpd and all of it. You brought up a little more than a month ago there was a General Police order issued to officers here. Theres a section here that the head of the police union takes issue with. I want to put it up on the screen if we have it. And it controversy deescalation techniques. And it says deescalation techniques may include verbal persuasion warnings and tactical deescalation techniques such as slowing down the pace of an incident. Waiting out subjects, creating distance. Steve loomis who heads up the local union says that creating distance is a retreat and sends the wrong message to protesters. You say what . I say its a safety zone. Its not that i days agree or agree with steve. I dont believe its been practiced. I disagree with part of that. How do, if at all, the attack in dallas and what we saw in nice change the Security Posture here in cleveland . Well they have tabletops after all of these issues. Dallas and what happened in nice. Theyve thought on many, many things. In reference to what happened in nice and vehicles, for example, all four days, truck traffic is going to be restricted into downtown unless it has police escorts. So, theyve thought of just about everything. I mean, theyre really prepared for this. I think what happened in dallas, the tragedy in dallas, keeps our officers on their toes. They have to, if they want to come home at the end of the day, at the end of the night. So, are they aware of it . Sure. Does it affect the protocol, the way they act, i dont think so. Theyre going to be professional anyway it happens. Bob reid, our new law unforcement analyst here in cleveland. Bob, thank you so much. Thank you. Christi. All right. I know theres a lot of energy here in cleveland, even though the convention hasnt officially started yet, but it feels like it has. Earlier, i got a sneak peek. Went down to the floor and spoke to our wash bureau chief sam price about what we have still to do. Hen you watch cnns coverage through the convention over the course of the next week, were going to broadcast from quite a number of locations. Let me just point out the locations in the hall. And roving reporters. And around the floor, well have reporters roving the floor, if you will, talking to political leaders, talking to speakers. If you think about the location thats cnn has. Call it an allaccess pass. Theres so much energy in this hall right now. Just the hubbub of trying to get things together. You can hear the drilling, the sanding, the sawing, it does not compare to the energy once is this done and delegates are here. So, this will be teaming with people. It will be full of people. There will definitely be a heartbeat those room. On thursday night, those are some of the balloons that will drop on thursday night. So they put them into bags. And they will be loading them into the ceiling today and tomorrow. The ceiling will be full of balloons. And they will then drop them off on thursday night, presumably after donald trump accepts the nominee. Is that netting up there. Theres netting and balloons that will be filling the ceiling. But this is the cavs arena . And thats what made this even more challenges for the Republican National convention and the news media. The nba championships were held right in this very spot. And that delayed their ability to start constructing what you see around us. And, of course, at the convention, theyre going to be talking, of course, about what weve been watching this morning. And weve got more news to tell you regarding the terror attack, isis claiming, its very unusual. Inspired. Right. The attempted coup, of course in turkey as well. The next hour of new day starts after a short break. Donald trump i love the old days; you know what they used to do with guys like that when they were in a place like this . Theyd be carried out on a stretcher, folks. And you can tell them to go f themselves i could stand in the middle of 5th avenue and shoot somebody and i wouldnt lose any voters, okay . Its like incredible. When mexico sends its people, theyre bringing drugs, theyre bringing crime, theyre rapists. You know, you could see there was blood coming out of her eyes, blood coming out of her wherever. You gotta see this guy ahh, i dont know what i said, ahh. I dont remember. Hes going like, i dont remember our children and grandchildren will look back at this time. At the choices we are about to make. The goals we will strive for. The principles we will live by. Ohm thousands on the streets, some of them called outdoors by the president. Protesters facing down a tank. Soldiers firing their weapons in the air. It was one ambulance after another after another. Ten children among the 84 dead. Is this an impression of a disaster, why so much hate . Is the United States and the western world, are we doing enough to stop these kinds of attacks . I think were doing the right things, we just have to intensify the effort. We are so grateful to have your company at this hour. Im christi paul. Im victor blackwell. Good morning to you. We are live in cleveland, ohio, the site of the Republican National convention. But we are here just outside of the quicken arena. And we will get to that big story in just a moment. Its one of three major stories were following right now in just a matter of hours. We know that were going to see for the first time together presented this republican president ial ticket, the presumptive nominee donald trump set to introduce his rung mate indiana governor mike pence. This after a source tells cnn trump had lastminute thoughts about that decision. Theres violence, however, and turmoil in turkey which is some of the big news this morning to a bloody coup overnight by a faction thats military. 161 people have died. That is the number this hour. Uncertainty is still very much present in the streets there. What does this mean for the two u. S. And nato ally . And lets go to southern france, new terror arrests overnight as isis claims to have inspired thursdays truck raid in nice to have killed 84 people, including two americans. But first to curbingky, president erdogan says the coup has failed and the government is in control, plunging the country into a nice of chaos. [ gunfire ] and then in istanbul, take a look here, gunfire raining down from helicopters. You heard it there. More than 1,400 people, we understand, have been injured in the confusion across the country. And nearly 3,000 members of the military have been detained. Now, overnight, the military from the parliament. Soldiers also entered our affiliate cnnturk in istanbul, claiming it under marble law. The network resumed broadcasting about 45 minutes after being taken off the air. A short time ago, the turk kish Prime Minister praised his people for bringing an end to the uprising. Translator a coup was attempted by gun and against them. And again them you have been defending democracy. Our noble nation has been defending democrats all the night. And normal in the morning. Joining me now from istanbul journalist Andrew Finkle who has been reporting there for decades. We saw what could be only be described as chaos overnight. Whats the scene there now, andrew . Reporter well, its of course, much quieter. This morning, i was out and about in the city of istanbul. Here at least we have a sleepy weeb weekend morning. I think people were up all night. The houses were shake with supersonic bypasses of jets buzzing the main areas of the city. I could hear gunfire from my window in a fairly remote part of the city. But this morning, things to come back to normal. Of course, the capital was much tenser there. The coup plotters were reluctant to throw in the towel. But this attempt seems to be well and truly over, victor. All right. So the coup has ended. And now we are to look forward in what will be the president s next steps. This, in many respects, was birthed out of what the president has been criticized for, even by the u. S. , for crack down on journalists and freedom of expression. Would one expect that he would return to that, as he tries now to purge his government of these who tried to overthrow their government . Reporter well, its a serious irony perhaps that people have accused mr. Erdogan himself having staged not an overnight coup, but a longterm attempt to seize pretty much all the reins of power in turkey. As you mentioned hes made a concerted attempt to seize the opposition press. There have been issues raised in newspapers. Chances are youll find the plug pulled out on satellite broadcasting. And hes even moved against the judiciary. However, except for one bastion that he hasnt been able to get control of was the military itself. And of course, the coup plotters, instead of making it more difficult for him to move against the military, have now made it that much easier. Victor. Andrew finkle over there in istanbul. Thanks so much. Lets bring in kimberly dossier, cnn contributor and daily beast contributor. Kimberly, as i say good morning to you. This is a really important threshold for the u. S. And the world not only for the air base but that passthrough, that porous border between syria and turkey. What does the attempted coup, the last 36 hours, mean for fight against isis . Well, theres probably a lot of chaos among the guards at the border trying to look out for isis, al nusra, militants trying to smuggle leaders supplies over the border. Theyre probably looking inward to see who is going to be in charge. The u. S. Is trying to seal up that border so that isis can rebuild its failing forces as theyre circled around raqqah. And also theyre in a place called mandich. And amandich the small town around turkey is where isis has been bringing foreign fighters in. And as as sort of a call center by which they knew recruit fighters around the world and funding as that city is losing one of its major communication modes but just miles away is the border with turkey. Isis has been trying to smuggle out some of its top leaders out of the back side of mandich. And if the Turkish Forces were distracted, theres a possibility that they succeeded and got some of their fighters out. So does this jeopardize the u. S. s ant to continue to use that air base, to continue to keep the 2200 u. S. Military there as they continue this fight . Well, with president erdogan this morning, that relationship is probably secured. But what they have to worry about now is that erdogan will use this coup as a reason to crack down not just on the coup plotters but any of his political opposition, stepping up some of his moves over the last several months and years. You have to remember the last Prime Minister resign ed in may because he was upset that erdogan making this de facto dictatorship for his country. The u. S. Has been asking behind closeddoors and sometimes in Public Comments that he respects rights, expects democracy, and you heard comments from erdogan and his new more loyal Prime Minister that friends didnt understand what we were up against. That was a veiled message to the United States. See, dont ask us to comply with some of these human rights issues that youre complaining about, because we have bigger problems to deal with. Victor. Yeah, that would was brought out just a little more than a month ago, criticizing the treatment in turkey. Kimberly dozier, thank you so much. Were going to our International CorrespondentClarissa Ward live from nice this morning. And isislinked media calling the truck driver, quote, an isis soldier who targeted nationals at the Coalition Countries fighting isis. And the Prosecutors Office says five people are in custody this morning. One of those people we know is the attackers exwife. Our senior International CorrespondentClarissa Ward joining us from nice. Clarissa, first of all, tell us about this isis claim calling him a soldier, actually calling him a soldier for their cause . Reporter well, it appears, christi, that what isis is saying here is that he was inspired by their cause. That perhaps this attack was isisinspired, rather than isisdirected. As you mentioned the amok news agency which is a mouthpiece for isis said the soldier who answered the call for attacks. You remember that isis is calling for attacks specifically their spokesman actually called if you dont have a bomb, take a knife and stab someone. This is a specific from the past. We already heard from especially an isis radio bulletin. They said the same thing, they said this is the work of an isis soldier. They have warned the crusader states, i. E. , they have warned any coalition against isis, that there will be more attacks of this nature. Meanwhile, authorities on the ground dont seem to have found any clear coherent connection between attacker and isis, or in fact any other Extremist Group. The man was known for being involved with some criminal activity. But no clear terrorism links yet. Also, were hearing a lot of arrests, five people now in custody. One the exwife who was arrested. But the other four are men. We dont know yet who exactly they are. Or what their role may have been. But now it looks like this attack may have been more opportunistic rather than a direct claim of responsibility. Victor and christi. Clarissa ward, we appreciate it. We are just a few hours away from Donald TrumpsNews Conference introducing his Vice President ial pick. Indiana governor, of course, mike pence. Reporting from our dana bash, however, shed some light on the uncertainty that surrounded this decision. A source telling nn that trump wasnt certain hed made the right choice. Now, it could be because there are distinct differences. And were talking about policy differences between these two. Lets share them for you right now. Pence first of all supports the trade agreements, trump does not. Pence voted to invade iraq. Now says he supports it. Trump initially opposed trumps muslim ban and condemned trumps comments on mexican heritage. And endorsed ted cruz. We have boris eckstein, matt stevens in atlanta, contributor to politics 365. Good to have you back, matt. Good to have you in this morning, boris. Lets start here with the list that christi just went through. We heard this from a tweet of dan senor. Pence, protrade, proiraq war, and antimuslims. Until this morning. Signs on to the trump agenda. Why is he the right guy . A month ago everybody was complaining that trump wasnt uniting the party somehow. This is what theyre doing. Theyre uniting the party. The party is coalescing around donald trump. Paul ryan went out and said he didnt agree with him when he was the vp nominee. And they went out and found somebody who is a job creator, business leader, congressman, a governor. Hes got immense experience. Very popular in the Republican Party. And will bring voters into the party. You say business leaders. The democrats will point out the trouble potentially that he put the economy in back in 2015 with his religious freedom law that was enacted. And, matt, im going to come out to you right after we watch this, as we saw from the Clinton Campaign right after the announcement was made via twitter. Watch. Are you willing to hold up this entire budget over a Defunding Planned Parenthood . Of course, i am. I long for the day of roe versus wade is sent to the ash heap of history. And possibly the 60 million impact of that law. Matt, you called this pick potentially a blessing for the Clinton Campaign. Why. Well, i think donald trump has no experience being in Congress Like mike pence, and sitting in a governors chair like he does now. What it does now is adds a record that Hillary Clinton and her team can look at that they can dissect. Much like her record is dissected by the trump team and other teams in the primaries. I think it gives her something to look the and definitely gives her something to look at. Specifically around a religious freedom bill like you mentioned, i think anytime a sitting executive is willing to cost their state 60 million on their watch, i think that says a lot. I think the groups that mike pence offended with the religious freedom bill as well as his stance on abortion in indiana, i think these are all going to be fair game for Hillary Clinton. Mike pence is pro life, right . That is not a surprise, the Republican Party is prolife. Pence came in over 8 of unemployment. Three years later, under 5 unemployment. 100,000 jobs created. Now the Second Lowest unemployment for veterans. The second best for veteran employment. Let me ask you about the reporting from dana bash. That the gut pick was chris christie. And he went with the pick that we know of from her reporting that the trump children thought was best for their father. Is he going to be able to keep up this continued support of mike pence . This is a man who we know speaks off the cuff and is used to going with his gut . Hes not going to see him say, man, i wish i picked the other guy . Everybody from the trump report said that dana bash is wrong in that report. That is not how it actually happened. Donald trump is excited about mike pence being the vp. Its going to be a Great PartnershipGoing Forward and winning on november 8. Theres one element that makes you nervous if as boris suggest, mike spence able to bring in the establishment. Although weve seen from dan senor, the confidence in this pick, that makes you a little worried . It does. And when i say worried, i mean kind of almost in a jokingly way. I really mean what mike pence needs to do if he is potentially going to help donald trump win the presidency is women are really an issue with donald trump. As well as young voters, as well as educated voters. Mike pence has a big job ahead of him if hes going to help donald trump win. Donald trump has so many associ campaign. That offthecuff, outspoken individual. And i can mike pence as an establishment guy, hes fighting an uphill battle, not just on his own record, but at everything donald trump has said in the campaign. Boris, let me come to you, christi talked be about it in the first segment what we heard about the total shutdown of mutt li muslims coming into the u. S. , how did he get there he supports it . The whole country is coming around. Look whats happening in europe. France had an opendoor policy now theyre shutting it down. Dual passwords between france and middle eastern countries. The whole world is seeing whats happening. We in this country need to address whats happening at our borders because we are exposed. You can count on one thing, Hillary Clinton is very ready to be able to pounce on the announcement of mike pence. I wish she was ready for benghazi. Because she was not. She reacted in seconds to the announcement of mike pence. Listen, the support for it is expanding unfortunately every attack that we see and sadly in this country, in orlando, we need to address immigration influx in this country. We need to figure out how to be safe. Matt stevens, boris stein, thank you. Top republicans are sticking to convention. Thousands of people are going to pack the quicken loans arena and the area around it. Security say major factor here. Cleveland needs outside help. You just saw there, the turkish president making a rare and extraordinary plea over facetime in the middle of a coup attempt. [ gunfire ] it was a violent, chaotic night of fighting. 161 people are dead this morning, and more than 1,000 are injured as the Turkish Military took down this attempted coup. Erdogan denounced the rebellion, said his government is indeed in control. Nearly 3,000 officers and troops, though, suspected of leading this uprising are now detained this morning sflp as we watched that night in turkey, were also closely monitoring the grim aftermath there on the french riviera, where a truck driver just mowed down, plowed through bastille day revelers there. Isis issued a statement calling the driver a soldier for its cause. 84 people, some of them children, died there on that stretch. The attackers exwife is among five people in custody in connection with that massacre. Two days out not, and the eyes of the world are preparing now to turn now to cleveland for the Republican National convention. There are so many officers who are needed to secure this event, they set up a twomile perimeter outside of it. The Police Department here is having to depend on outside help but as Martin Savidge reports now some of that outside help is backing out. Reporter cleveland would be boggled. More than 50,000 people expected for the Republican National convention, a tempting target for terror. At the bat, trump is polarizing campaign with violence at his rallies, angry demonstrations against police shootering, the violence and you get the picture. Even though, city Officials Say they are ready. We have planned, we have whatifd, we have tabletopped this from day one to yesterday. Reporter the convention is less than a week away, how are you feeling . Anxious. Reporter security rules ban people from bringing more than 70 different items into the event area during the rnc from axes to tennis balls but not guns. Ohios an open carry state, meaning you can holster your handgun or sling your rifle over your shoulder and its perfectly legal. One group, the new black panthers, no friends to police, say they plan to do just that. Although its legal for them to do, its absolutely irresponsible for them to do or anybody. Reporter thats just problem one. Cleveland has said it needs about 3,000 Police Officers. It doesnt have them. To secure the rnc, its temporarily hiring 2100 cops from around the country. Recruiting is harder than expected and some departments are backing out. Greensboro, north carolina, was sending 50 officers but then changed its mind. In an internal memo greensboros chief noted a lack of confidence in the city of cleveland and their preparedness for the rnc. To try to reassure them, clevelands police chief has taken to twitter saying our officers have kwu s havs have uf training. He didnt give details. And then 300 bicycles. And documents show clevelands been on a 20 million security shopping spri. Motorcycles, horse trailers, flexible handcuffs, water taxis. Rain ponchos and refrigerators. We ordered it which caused problems once it got here. This is the main element. Reporter problems such as the riot gear wouldnt fit over the officers vests. Departments have been busy seeking lastminute alterations. How many of these have you done . Probably around 50 or 60. Reporter making sure their riot gear and body armor fits sounds like a good idea. Martin savidge, cnn, cleveland. And were finally learning who is going to take the stage at the Republican National convention. The names range from that of the familiar and not so familiar faces such as Silicon Valleys david thiel. There are big names, before we get to who will be here, getting to a lot of people that some might be looking for but will be noticeably absent. What have you learned this morning . Yeah, there have been about 20 republican senators who have been very vocal about being willing to attend. Some names were seeing kelly ayotte from new hampshire, of course, lindsey graham, a south carolinian who has been vocal. But not just senators weve seen high profile people expected to be there such as both bush president s. Jeb bush, of course, whos been critical of trump wont be attending either. But its not looking as if some of the names that people would expect to be at such a highprofile event will actually be there. So, if youre talking about no one from the bush family, the last known standing senators and mitt romney bowing out here, it might make a people wonder if their absence will dilute it in any way . Well, we know there are some that will go, we saw ted cruz accept his speaking spot. Newt gingrich. Tom koffman. But the purpose is questioned. Its not clear if they are supporting donald trump or if they are primarily there to promote conservatives and encourage voters not to allow Hillary Clinton to win the white house. There was a moment this week i want to talk to you about, sarah palin. Theres a report initially that she had been invited, and it was decided and it did not say by whom that she would not attend because she was in alaska and it was too far away. I dont know that geography has ever kept sarah palin from an event. What are you hearing about the validity of that excuse . Reporter well, it certainly hasnt kept her from trump events. She has certainly spoken at trump events that are farther from alaska than cleveland. So the questions that people have seem to be valid. Of course, we havent been given anything official from the Trump Campaign. But the reason for her absence, its not quite clear. Especially since she was one of the early political supporters to come out and back trump. Okay. Do we know, yet, because you made mention that paul ryan is going to be here. Ted cruz we know is going to be here. We dont know if theyre going to really be here specifically to support trump, as you said. Will we hear an endorsement from cruz . We dont know that yet. But just wondering if we have an idea of the tone, are they going to be talking about unity. About the economy. About terrorism and security as based on what weve seen in the last couple of days. The last 48 hours . What are you hearing . I think what we have heard so far, what we can expect from people like paul ryan and ted cruz and scott walker is that republicans cannot allow Hillary Clinton to take the white house. That will be their focus and if you look at a lot of their interviews even on cnn, much of the time spent talking about why they are present is mainly an attack on Hillary Clinton. And a lack of trust and confidence in her ability to promote conservative values if she takes over the white house. So, i think that will be the main focus of much of their speeches. That will be the theme. Eugene scott, always good to see you. Thank you, sir. You, too. Isis is claiming that the nice attacker is one of its soldiers. Investigators say he was already on police radar for petty crimes, but he was not suspected of possible terrorism, or terrorism contacts. Investigators found no real ties to extremists. But also the q, quicken loans arena where republicans gather to nominate donald trump to officially be the next president of the United States. You wont want to miss a lot of it. Theres so much that goes into this that youre not going to see. Youre going to see it now, though. Take a look. In many ways the essential part of the convention that you never get to see but here it is. So this is cnns portable control room, if you will. In this truck are technicians, engineers, production staff, editorial staff, graphics team, everything that we need to put together a production. Well show you up front. Up here our directors and producers will have access to dozens and dozens of cameras from around the Convention Floor. Every single screen will be lit up. We are just setting it up now, but as you can start to see we have individual cameras in our anchor booth, on the floor, well have access to cameras all around the hall. And everything that you need to pull together the convention. Even cameras outside the hall. A convention is nothing unless you can hear what the candidates and the speakers are saying. Thats where our cnn audio team comes in. So is it safe to say that you hear things that you could probably write about that people never hear . Yes. But professionalism prevents me. This is an inside look at things you will not see during the convention. Listen, i want to get you back to nice with Clarissa Ward with more coming to us there regarding the terror attacks this week. Clarissa . Reporter thank you. Thats right, christi. This was the scene of the attack now open for business. Tourists are walking up and down the promenade once again. But i want to bring in melissa bell, a reporter for france 24, and she joins us now on the phone. Melissa, french authorities essentially saying they didnt find direct links to isis. But now were seeing isis take credit for this or at least take credit for having inspired it. What is your assessment of the situation . Do we know of any concrete connections between the attacker and any Extremist Group . No, no concrete connection. I think it is important to bear in mind we have had to wait a long time for this claim of responsibility. More than 36 hours. It caming a long time after the event. What is interesting when you look at the precise statements as well they put out on the news wire as to which they so often put out their information, they speak, they boasted a new method of killing, this new method of operation, a new way theyre functioning. This is something we have been talking about a lot the last few days. This truck used as a weapon is something very new. And the fact they boast it. The fact that back in september of 2014 when abu mohommad al baghdadi called for them to take on the french at home using any specifics they had, specifically mowing them down with a car. Now the Islamic Group is boasting whether or not they had actually reached out to the driver of the truck. At any point, for the time being completely unclear, what seems far more likely is they have seen a Good Opportunity for propaganda on the back of something they had nothing to do with even if he was inspired by their call that i just mentioned. We are going to know more about it. This is something well get to the bottom of. In the hands of the authorities are his computer, are his phone. Well know whether there was any direct contact between himself and members of the Islamic State abroad. Melissa, i wanted to ask you because yesterday we saw the motorcade passing by here of francois hollande, do you think theres a sense that people in france feel disappointed the government hasnt been able to stablize the security situation . Naturally you get a sense of panic. First of all, theres an extraordinary amount of solidarity among the french people, just after the february 13th attacks. There is also increasingly this sense of complete vulnerability. We felt it back on the 13th of november. But the fact that the attack has taken place and in a completely new kind of way, this new method the Islamic State boasts of on its website, on its in its communication, its specifically warning people a great deal. If you think back to the Charlie Hebdo massacre, yes, they had gotten some training but they were through the route to let intelligence authorities know who they were. Same with november 13th. We are looking at a profile of youth who have been to and from syria being actively watched by Security Services, but there was a failing within Security Services clearly in both occasions. Here, this man was not known to any of the Security Services. Youre talking about a suspect who in the words of the French Administration in the last few minutes became radicalized very quickly. But mohomed lahouaiej had no failings at all to add to instability. Because it could happen any time, any where. And theres no way to keep an eye on men like this. Melissa bell, thank you so much. Well be monitoring new information coming out of this terror attack and whether or not it was truly isis inspired or isis directed. For now, victor and christi, back to you. Thousands on the streets, some of them called out by the president. Protesters on tanks, soldiers firing their weapons in the air. We just saw an ambulance after another after another after another and stretching out and out and out. Ten children among the 84 dead. Its the same question people are asking, why . Is the United States and the western world, are we doing enough to stop these kinds of attacks . I think we are doing the right things. We just need to intensify the effort. Good morning, everybody. We are always so grateful to have you with us. Im christi paul. Im victor blackwell. We are live in cleveland, ohio. Site of the Republican National convention, just two days away now. We are following three major stories right now. First up, in just a few hours, well get our first look at the Republican National ticket. Donald trump set to introduce his running mate, indiana governor mike pence, this happening as insiders tell us that trump was pondering the 11th hour reversal. And republicans hope to nominate their candidate to be the next commander in chief. Theres violence and turmoil in turkey. A bloody coup attempt overnight by a faction of the military. 161 people are dead this morning. And there is still at this hour uncertainty in the streets. What does this mean for this key u. S. Allie . And now to southern france. New terror raids and arrests overnight as isis calls the man behind thursdays truck rampage a soldier for its cause. But first were starting in turkey. President erdogan says the coup has failed and its government is in control after part of the Turkish Military tried to cease power plunging them into chaos. [ gunshots firing ] wow. Watch it and hear the bullets raining down from helicopters. More than 1,400 injured by gunfire and explosions as soldiers and tanks rolled through the streets of ankara and istanbul overnight. But the soldiers met resistance. You see it here from thousands of government supporters. They flocked to the streets after president erdogan pleaded for help. Nearly 3,000 members of the military had been detained. 3,000. Earlier the turkish Prime Minister said the coup was from various levels of the army including highranking officers. Those behind the uprising would be punished. During the failed coup attempt, television and social media were black for a period of time. For a minute the people of turkey had no way of knowing for certain whether their government had fallen. They didnt know who was in control. Cnns senior International Correspondent takes us through how all this unfolded overnight. Reporter 11 25 p. M. Friday local time the statement of taking control over the country and imposing marshal law. 12 26 a. M. Saturday, the president recep erdogan telling his supporters to go through the streets to fight for democracy. The anchor holding her microphone up to the phone to hear what hes saying. 1 50 a. M. , gunshots reported at the president ial complex in ankara and reports of helicopters opening fire at the National Intelligence headquarters. Videos and photos posted on social media showed large crowds marching through the streets and taunting soldiers. Some facing off against tanks and armored vehicles. Crowds also gathering at istanbuls airport, the site of the terror attack two weeks ago. Another flashpoint, the bosphorus bridge connecting turkish europe and asia. We heard two bombs in the last hour. And the fighter planes going right over us. And the last one, everyone just got up and ran inside. 2 51 a. M. , the turkish National Intelligence unit claims the coup is over. There are also reports of bombs thrown outside the Parliament Building in ankara. Meanwhile, troops enter tv stations taking over the newsroom and shutting down the network, cnn turk. It was quite a scary moment. My staff, their phones were confiscated. Reporter around 3 20 a. M. , turkish president erdogans plane lands at istanbuls airport. He said they started arresting military officers at various ranks. The deputy Prime Minister talks to cnn on the phone. Who is in control now in turkey . Well, there has been a failed coup attempt. Government is in full control. There is still some rogue aircraft over ankara. And i think they will likely be forced down. Reporter 6 30 a. M. At dawn on saturday president erdogan addresses a large crowd. He calls the coup attempt treason and says his government is in control. We will stand firm. We are not going to compromise. Reporter daylight brings clear pictures of the aftermath. These incredible scenes from Istanbuls Bosphorus bridge as soldiers surrendering unmasked walking away from tanks and abandoning their posts. And in ankara, pictures of serious damage done to the Turkish Parliament. Joining us now from istanbul, journalist andrew has been reporting from there for decades. I want to start with how large or small a portion of the military tried to stage this coup. Right now almost 3,000 members of the military are being detained. Put that into context, how many or what percentage of the military really tried this . Reporter well, i would find it hard to give you an actual consensus. But what is very clearly the case that it wasnt the entire military. It wasnt the entire chain of command. And, of course, that may be a reason why the coup failed. On the other hand, it was not an amateurish operation to get that many tanks, to get 3,000 officers represents and huge portion of the Turkish Military. So it was essentially a concerted effort but not a unified effort. Thats probably the best way we can put it. So the question then, if as we saw overnight some of the leaders of the Opposition Party actually condemned this coup attempt, some military leaders condemned this coup attempt, who is behind it . Erdogan said in this News Conference, now i turn to you in pennsylvania, presumably speaking to the who is this muslim cleric . Give us background, is he the person behind this attempted coup . He is a respected islamic theologian who now lives in pennsylvania of all places. And he commanded the large following in turkey. Indeed, that following once lent their support to mr. Erdogan. And so he was once an allie of this particular government. His followers got into government, got into positions of power and authority, the police, the judiciary, the military, and many accused him of being sort of sleepers of having their own agenda and not being there for their own purposes. Well, at a certain point he and mr. Erdogan fell out. He accused his followers accused erdogan of a gross corruption. And there was a huge amount of scandals and tapes released. And then mr. Erdogan described that as a coup attempt against himself, the fact that all the revelations are coming out. Ever since then, he and his followers have been blamed for anything that goes wrong in turkey. To my mind its not really credible that a cleric who is not terribly well living in pennsylvania could have organized a major coup attempt thousands of miles away on the other side of the ocean. All right. Andrew finkel, thank you so much. Well continue this conversation now and i want to bring in Cnn National Security analyst peter bergen. Peter, i want to start with, of course, turkey is geographically and strategically important in this fight against isis. This attempted coup will no doubt be a distraction for the military, but practically what will it mean for, not only the Turkish Military trying to seal that forced border, although they have been criticized for not doing enough, but what this means for the u. S. Military as they try to take the fight to isis next door . Reporter well, i think because the coup was averted the United States does not have to make a difficult decision. If it succeeded, the u. S. Couldnt be involved in a doing business with a military dictatorship but a ceasefire from a democratically elected. Gov. As a practical matter, if it had happened, the United States will continue its relationship as it has over the democratically elected government in 2013. So i think the outcome of this means there wont be much of a change. If the turks they have been doing a much better job at stopping foreign fighter recruits joining isis in syria, cramping down on that flow. They have also been much more willing to do turkish base for american aircraft flying missions against isis and i dont anticipate that will change, victor. Okay. Before we look too far ahead, lets look back just a bit. And what does this say to you about u. S. Intelligence there in turkey that it appeared that no one knew this was a possibility or a probability that there would be this attempted coup there. Well, i think this is what happens whenever theres a revolution or a coup. Intelligence agencies are criticized for not seeing it coming. But president the turkish government didnt see this coming. It was very tightly held. And thats kind of the nature of coups and often of revolutions is that people dont see them coming. Now that said, i think its widely known that or widely understood that there was unhappiness in the military, that the president has cracked down on the organizations and journalists and is regarded as something of an autocratic ruler. So the conditions that produced the coup are widely understood, the actual timing of the coup was not. All right. Peter bergen with us this morning, peter, thank you so much. Were learning this morning that most of the promenade has just reopened in france. And were also learning the driver who plowed into the crowd there just days ago is now being praised by isis. Breaking news this morning, isis has issued a statement calling the truck driver, quote, an isis soldier who targeted nationals of the Coalition Fighting isis. And five people are in custody this morning. One of those the attackers exwife. Will ripley is joining us live from taksim square. We are hearing this man was inspired by isis, but any indications that the attacker took direction from isis . Reporter french investigators arent saying whether they buy this claim from isis that they are taking credit more than a day later from the horse srific attack here. We are told at least 15 people died in this spot and you can actually see people left flowers in some of the areas. The note on these says 20 hit here, many children. They tried to wash off the streets but they havent been able to get all the stains off of the sidewalk. And yet you have tourists walking through here. We know that isis has sent out messages going back some six years telling people to arm themselves with whatever means possible, whether it be bombs or knives or even to run people wofr their car. But whether or not this particular attacker was inspired by isis is still unknown. According to his neighbors, he never went to the mosque. He went to the gym and was a heavy drinker. He didnt have a beer. He ate pork. Nothing of the indications of a jihadist. More the indication of someone essentially a madmen who decided to come through here and mow down as many people as he could. We just spoke with a woman who pointed to this spot over here. She said some of the children she sold candy to that night, she watched them die. The city is trying to return to one of the most Beautiful Spots in the rivera. Its so haunting and sad to be here to know what happened a short time ago. Already. Will ripley, thank you so much. We appreciate it. And i cannot imagine what it is like to be there and listen to all the accounts from people. I want to bring back in peter bergen. We just heard that account and that characterization of this driver from will ripley. How legitimate do you believe these claims from isis are that he was a soldier for them . Reporter christi, this reminds me of the claim they made after the orlando attack, a soldier, an isis soldier. Now omar mateen who killed 49 of the nightclub in orlando, he had no connections to isis in any meaningful way. He just may have absorbed some of their propaganda. Like the nice attack er, omar mateen, he and his wife appear to be somewhat troubled. So these climbs are opportunistic. That doesnt preclude that the nice attacker may have invited jihadist material and been inspired by isis. But it certainly doesnt prove at all there was any isis direction. And, in fact, when theres isis direction, we call the attack in bangladesh with 20 people kill in the cafe. Isis quickly claimed responsibility and showed pictures of the attack as it happened in realtime showing the victims clearly photos sent to isis by people involve in the attack. So that kind of claim of responsibility is legitimate. These claims are opportunistic and certainly prove nothing in terms of direction. In fact, it would be very surprising if it was isis direction in this case. A very good point. Peter bergen, thank you so much. Appreciate it. We are here in cleveland, the head of the Republican National convention. And donald trump announces his pick for Vice President , mike pence. But sources say that was not a gut choice. Soon donald trump will hold the News Conference introducing his Vice President ial pick, indiana governor mike pence. But reporting from dana bash sheds light on the hours leading up to what were going to see this morning. Lets go now to cnn National CorrespondentJason Carroll. We understand that there were some conversations that had been late in the evening. Well, thats what were hearing. Conversations obviously regarding donald trump and whether or not he was really, really happy with the pence choice. Campaign chair Paul Manafort saying thats not true. Look, at the end of the day, pence will appear at a News Conference in new york later this morning. This really seemed to go down to the wire with Trump Building up much of the drama surrounding his decision. Thursday evening he told another network he still had not made a final decision. Pence had until friday to withdraw papers to run for reelection for governor of indiana. Trump then officially offering pence the position on thursday leading up to the decision. Trump had his finalists out on the campaign trail with him, newt gingrich, new Jersey Governor Chris Christie and pence were all out with trump. Sources telling cnn there was some secondguessing going on from trump about his decision. Trump apparently swayed by his children who felt pence was the right political choice. Pence saying he is actually looking forward to being Vice President. Im excited. Im excited to be joining the ticket tomorrow with donald trump. I think hell be a great president and i look forward to carrying his message all across this country in the months ahead and serving with him in the next administration. That was pence here in new york. Ive spoken to some republican insiders, some of whom have been uneasy with trump in his rhetoric, they seem to be pleased with the pence choice. One gop activist saying pence brings balance to the ticket. Pence appeals to social conservatives, he appeals to tea partiers and evangelicals, though he has disagreed with trump in the past on issues such as trumps proposal to ban muslims from entering the u. S. , it should be noticed that pence once endorsed ted cruz. Dan senior who served as a Senior Adviser to mitt romneys president ial campaign suggested pence once found trumps rhetoric unacceptable, senior tweeting, its disorienting to have had commiserated with someone regarding trump about how he was unacceptable and then to see that someone become trumps vp. Again, the 57yearold governor will be appearing with trump later on today just about a couple hours from now. Pence later on will be returning to indiana for a welcomed home rally. Victor . All right, Jason Carroll there for us, thank you so much. And in just a moment well talk about the strategy behind the pence pick. Also, attacks around the world and here at home have gotten firm reactions from the president ial candidates. I wonder how the voters feel about that. Stay close. I had no idea. Its opened up a whole new world for me. The still feels betterrbo after 10 shaves than a disposable on its first. Mach 3 blades have twice the coating. For a closer shave with zero redness. Shave, after shave, after shave. Gillette. The best a man can get. A military coup underway in turkey. We heard two bombs. Thousands on the streets, some of them called outdoors by the president. Protesters on tanks. Soldiers firing their weapons in the air. Welcome back. Im victor blackwell. Im christi paul. So grateful for your company as always. We want to update you on the breaking news out of turkey this morning. Chaos here. A night of gunfire, bombings left 161 people dead. More than 1,000 injured as the Turkish Military, at least a portion of it, tried to stage a coup. Another half of it put down that attempt. It was an especially tense time for the Obama White House because turkey is a member of nato and a key u. S. Allie in the war against isis. Cheers from crowds here as proGovernment Troops moved in and put down that rebellion. Nearly 3,000 military personnel now are and thesuspected of bei behind this attempt. They surrendered by the hundreds here. This is something we have never seen before. The president erdogan using social media to contact cnn turk and urging the country to rally for democracy. Translator i want to encourage my people to the streets and invite them to the airports. And together as people gather show them by letting them come with their tanks to see what they are going to do, do it right there to the people. Power above the people i have never seen. So the Turkish Parliament meets in 90 minutes to discuss last nights ineffective coup. Just about twoandahalf hours now from the donald trump News Conference. Producing his Vice President ial pick, indiana governor mike pence. As soon as it was announced via twitter, arizona senator jeff black applauded the choice saying this would add to the ticket. The communications chief sean spicer also called it a great pick. But the Chicago Tribune showed that trump didnt want to win saying that pence is also an unpopular sitting governor in a state with 11 electoral votes isnt considered crucial in the general election. He adds political experience to the ticket but he also expands trumps alienating brand. With me on to talk about it, katie macknater and the new jersey state director, good to have you both on this morning. Before we talk about mike pence, i want to talk about donald trump and you, steve, thursday night the dump donald trump Never Trump Movement lost its fight in the rules committee. Are you now ready to accept that donald trump will be the nominee for the party . Well, donald trump will be the nominee for the party. I really have no doubt about it. But it was a big disappointment. It was a big uphill battle getting through the rules committee and was shocking. After weeks being told by the rnc the delegates were bound by the rule to test the rule 37b, they have to define the delegates. Look, you have seen the republican establishment in washington, d. C. Come together with donald trump to make sure that they keep control of the convention and shove their way through. The conservative movement has taken a major setback. Winning means galvanizing and getting to an exciting place to get the republicans unified. This is a problem donald trump has right now. The Republican Party is not unified. Thats not true. Donald trump john kasich is not someone like mike pence is a staunch conservative, high rating, he stands for everything that the Republican Party has stood for for a long time. By choosing mike pence, donald trump said im different from the republican platform, but i deeply respect the undervalues they have had for a long time. Mike pence is a decent pick but hes not the candidate for president , donald trump is. Look at the number of the republicans who are not at the convention which the rnc is not talking about, ranging from john kasich in his own state down to marco rubio. This is not a good sign for the Republican Party. When we need to be unified going into november to defeat Hillary Clinton. Let me ask you this, kaley, if the pence pick was to bring in the establishment members above the gut pick as reported of chris christie, if he, as we have seen overnight, ducked some of the most controversial platforms including the muslim ban, how does he become the liason to this . Im not sure he adopted the muslim ban. He adopted the ban put forward by cruz and by a rand paul on the senator floor saying to ban people from terrorist countries. Not necessarily the broader ban, so we do see him moving closer to trump in certain regards. But Standing Firm on his principles i think its nice to have on the ticket. People who stand for Different Things differ on issues like perhaps same sex issues where donald trump said he welcomes someone of Transgender Identity into the trump tower bathrooms. We dont know where mike pence stands there, but it is nice to have two views represent in one ticket. A diverse view with something for everyone in there. As long as that view is the view of the Republican Party and the conservative platform. Theres a huge concern for many of us. Does ted cruz endorse when he speaks at the convention . I dont. I think ted cruz will work to unify the party. But personally i would be surprised if you get a fullthroated endorsement of donald trump from ted cruz. Now personally, i would be disappointed of that only because of the attacks on him, his wife and his father. Remember him calling his father part of the assassination of john kennedy . Thats absurd. I would be disappointed but maybe he will. Donald trump said if you dont endorse you dont deserve the mike. Do we expect the anticlinton message from some of the staunch opponents to be enough . I really think ted cruz should take the step of endorpsing. You have a lot of republican cities on the sidelines saying we want to beat Hillary Clinton. We cant take another four or eight years of obama policies. By sitting on the sidelines, ted cruz is taking a real risk, especially when donald trump chose someone like mike pence taking a real risk to say, one day, ted cruz, maybe youre the real we have four years of clinton because you didnt endorse donald trump. It would be a big mistake. I dont know if it was a big mistake when Ronald Reagan didnt endorse gerald ford. So well see where ted cruz comes down. Last night, is the Never Trump Movement fight over . The Never Trump Movement was never designed to let me put it to you this way, the courageous conservative party said we would never participate in something to assist Hillary Clinton. We want a full and open convention. But it is not called an assisting clinton movement. Its the Never Trump Movement. Is that over considering well, i think the Never Trump Movement may shift im not part of this. I wont support the effort to undermine the Republican Party and Hillary Clinton. But there are people in the Never Trump Movement who will support a third party candidate. The Never Trump Movement is a small group of politicians and they are helping Hillary Clinton by default. Thank you both. Verecent polls give Hillary Clinton an edge over donald trump polls give donald trump an edge over Hillary Clinton. We are live from the cleveland site at the Republican National conventional with more on that. Stay close. Using 60,000 points from my chase ink card i bought all the fruit. Veggies. The terror attack in france is testing Hillary Clinton and donald trump on how they would handle National Security. Their responses are critical in whether voters trust them to keep the country safe come november. A new cbs poll shows this, both are equally favored in regards to how they handle terrorism. Theyre tied at 46 as you see there. But when it comes to handling isis specifically according to the latest quinnipiac poll, trump soars over clinton 52 to 39 . They both had very different responses to the attacks in nice this week and the fight against terror. Highlighting their position when it comes to foreign policy, listen to this. Would you go to congress and ask for a declaration of war . I would. I would. This is war. If you look at it, this is war. Coming from all different parts. And frankly, its war as were deal i dealing with people without uniforms. We are at war with these terrorist groups and what they represent. Its a different kind of war. And we need to be smart about how we wage it and win it. So i think we have to look at all possible approaches to doing just that. So sky hughes, Political Editor and matt stevens are joining us, contributor to politics 365. Thank you both for being with us. Lets talk about the recent polls that people believe donald trump is Better Qualified to handle isis specifically. Does his lets go bomb them all, though, really work when talking about nice. Many of these are lone wolf scenarios. I dont think you want to go just bomb them all. I think he needs a strategy to it. But what we need right now is to show that we have different policies than we have right now. President obama did a bad job when he called isis the j. V. Team. Hillary clinton has to show how her policy is different to handle isis over president obama which is not working. Donald trump needs to show strength and action, something we are not seeing out of this Current Administration and not a plan out of Hillary Clinton. He has to show force and strength to keep them over there. And its obvious the folks are continuing to come out across against the west. Well, Hillary Clinton is showing us i want to send this to you, matt, a record on her how she deals with National Security and does it in one of the latest attack ads. Lets watch. Okay. Im Hillary Clinton and i approve this message. Who do you talk to for military advice right now . Well, i watch the shows. I mean, i really see a lot of great when you watch your show and all of the other shows while donald trump watched tv, as secretary of state Hillary Clinton negotiated a ceasefire in gaza, a reduction in nuclear weapons, took on Vladimir Putin and stood up against the trafficking of human beings. A state did leader in an unsteady world. It is a powerful ad. Theres no doubt about it to a lot of people, although sky doesnt believe me. However, a lot of people would say its highlighting what shes done. Why then do people have such a hard time trusting her . Because this is where she falls short. Well, trust is one of those things with Hillary Clinton thats been a deficit for her. And i think its something shes working to overcome. I think that people need to probably see her in a president ial capacity more so when she served as secretary of state. Obviously, she was doing things like negotiating ceasefires in gaza and those arent always the pretty sexy headlines that grab attention. But i think that if people really look at candidate trump and candidate clinton, they will definitely see that candidate clinton is on track and on course to really represent the country in a way that we need to move forward. And shes actually assessing the threats with a plan on the ground to actually deal with the things that are coming up in the world, specifically when it comes to things like nice and the attack in orlando and the everchanging threats that come from isis. Of course, doing all this while shes trying to determine who her Vice President ial nominee, who her teammate will be, so to speak. I want to read a tweet that donald trump just recently tweeted out a couple minutes ago. He says, look forward to introducing governor mike pence who has done a spectacular job in the great state of indiana. My first choice from the start. This is why its important to say because there was reporting yesterday that at the midnight hour before this announcement was going to be made he was still by his gut leaning towards christie. Now cnn was not the only one reporting that. Kelly odonnell from nbc also reporting that. So this is a report that came to Different Networks from sources from donald trump. So scottie, how strong do you believe this team will be and what do you say about the reports that donald trump was not 100 certain . Well, i actually have a lock of confidence in whoever is leaking that out. Because if this was a conversation that happened at midnight, it was in front of a big crowd. Whoever is leaking this to reporters, i have to wonder their motivation . Are they here to show unification in the party . I cannot say if that happened. But until mr. Trump says it, i wont believe it. But i want to know who leaked it out and what is their motivation . What are you sitting through and trying to establish this by . Regardless if it is his first choice or second choice, he said all along im down to two or four people, hes not inviting him to this ticket if he didnt have a solid faith in him to bring strength to it. Matt, what do you say to this . These days we never know what is really going on with donald trump. He has operatives that leak things on purpose. Hes very active on social media. So theres really no telling where he could have been doing what he could have been doing with that information. And maybe he could have also been trying to create some type of buzz. You never know with donald trump these days. You never know with a candidate so off the cuff, that is so unruly and unpredictable these days. All rightt. Scottie, matt, thank you for being here. Sources tell us french investigators are investigating phone links between the nice attacker and the known terror suspect. Cnn terror analyst Paul Cruickshank is here with more. Reporter we have heard that his phone number popped up in a Counter Terrorism investigation a few years ago into a radical associate of the french jihadi called omar diabi. They went back through this attack and the other cases and were able to crossreference his phone number that cropped up in that case. Now what they are trying to figure out is what is the nature of that connection with this radical extremist in france. This is an associate of the wellknown frenchman omar niabi. And this comes just at the same time as the French Interior minister said there are indications that the attacker was radicalized in a very quick fashion over the last period. So the first signs now from french officials that this individual was animated by radical jihadi ideology. Thats obviously a Big Development in this investigation. Enough here to support this claim from isis that this attacker was a soldier inspired by isis . Reporter well, all isis is saying in their claim is that this individual reacted to that call for attacks. That they are essentially saying they inspired this attack. They have not claimed direct responsibility for it. They are not saying he trained with them in syria or anything like that. But they apeer to feel that they will launch attacks against syria or iraq. But no information to show he had direct ties to isis or was in communication with them. All right.
