This is more about poll numbers and patriotism. Saving his own political skin than americans lives. Cnn sources tell us it was the president s plummeting poll numbers that finally convince him to send the tweet. Here it is. Poll numbers like these. 54 in the Washington Post poll trust joe biden to handle the coronavirus. Just 34 trust trump. And this must have been landed hard in the white house. In the last fox news poll, 81 say they wear a mask in public all or most of the time. Heres the question. Will the president follow the lead . Or is his mask wearing another photo op just like gassing peaceful protestors so he can have the photo op holding a bible in front of the church . Among the people not asking these dwes is giving a big old at a boy. His ride or die. Graham tweeting them. Well done, mr. President. Wait to see if he wears one again. And again. Every day as many of us do, without expecting pats on the back for it. Heres when he said april 3 announcing new cdc guidelines calling on americans to wear masks. I think wearing a face mask as i greet president s, prime ministers, dictators, kings queens. I dont know. Somehow i dont see it for myself. Boy, poll numbers make you change your mind. The president said that, he just couldnt see wearing a mask to greet dictators by the way. That day the death toll was over 7,400. Tonight, 109 days later. That is nearly 141,000. I want you to listen to what the president says about resuming coronavirus briefings after three months. Well, we had very successful briefings. I was doing them. We had a lot of people watching. Record in yonumbers. Theres never been anything like it. Very successful. Record numbers of people watching. And also dying. What else would you expect from a man who made his name in reality tv . Kp promotes tomorrows episode. And so i think well start that probably starting tomorrow. Ill do it at 5 00. Like we were doing. We had a good slot. And people were watching. Thats a good thing. A good time slot. That is the reality tv president. Lets remember why those briefings stopped. This is back in april. I said supposing you brought the light inside the body. Which you can do. Through the skin or in some other way. And i think youll test that . Sounds interesting. I see the disinfectant. It knocks it out in a minute. One minute. And is there a way we can do Something Like that. By injection inside or almost a cleaning. It gets in the lungs. If you didnt see that and i told you the president said it you wouldnt believe me. This president cares more about seeming to be right than he does about doing the right thing. Listen to fox news chris wallace. Ill be right eventually. I will be right. Eventually. Its going to disappear. Ill say it again. Ill be right. I dont think so. It doesnt discredit, i have been right probably more than anybody else. I dont have a will the of time. If i started laughing i would have a fit here. That is laughable. Right more than anybody else . He sure wasnt right about the spread of the virus in the country. We have a totally under control. Its one person. Coming in from china. And we have it under control. When you have 15 people and the 15 within a couple days will be down to close to zero. Thats a good job we have done. We had a lot of people saying maybe we shouldnt do anything. Just ride it. Ride it like a cowboy. Ride it. Ride that sucker right through. It is going away. And it will go away. Well have a great victory. He wasnt right about testing, either. Anybody that wants a test can get a test. Now we have tested almost 40 million people. By so doing we showed cases. 99 of which are totally harmless. If we didnt do testing, instead of testing over 40 million people, if we did half the testing we would have half the cases. Cut that in half, we would have yet again half of that. What was that fuzzy math . If we test half as many people we would have the exact same number of cases. Testing doesnt cause cases. It tells you who is infected. Who might be Walking Around unknowingly infecting other people. And speak of laughable, theres this. California. Locking down begun. Florida. Deadliest day of the pandemic. Hospitals at capacity. Shortages of testing. Shortages of personal protective equipment for nurses and doctors. A lot of people say this is because we dont have a national plan. You talk about state. We dont have a national plan. Do you take responsibility for that . I take responsibility always for everything. Its ultimately my job too. I have to get everybody in line. He takes responsibility always for everything. Its my job. Always for everything. Theres a tape for everything. Yeah, i dont take responsibility as all. The president also insisting falsely the United States is number one. One of the lowest of mortality rate. I think its the opposite. We have one of the lowest mortality rates. Thats not true sir. We had 900 deaths in a single day. Well take a look. Ready . Get me the rate. I heard we have one of the lowest maybe the lowest mortality rate in the world. Do you have the numbers please . Can you get me the numbers . He did that more than once. Each time, it wasnt true. He wants to defund the police, abolish the police. Its not there. We have one of the lowest. Its not there. Its not true. First of all theres no way to call this the best when 141,000 americans are dead. I want you to look at this. The chart of death per 100,000 residents in the 20 most effected countries. The u. S. Get this everyone, the third worst. 17 countries including brazil, iran, and bangladesh. All have fewer deaths per 100,000. What really is disturbing about this is what the president says in response to the question will you accept the results of the election . I think mail in voting is going to rig the election. I really do. Are you suggesting you might not accept the results . I have to see. The president of the United States refusing to commit the accepting the results of our next election. Refusing to commit to accepting the foundation of our democracy. And going onto say this. Can you give a direct answer. You will accept the answer . I have to see. Im not going to just say yes. I didnt last time either. So, ill say it again. The president of the United States is refusing to commit to accepting the foundation of the democracy. Our free and fair election. And as for the president s lets call it what it is, his lie that voting by mail leads to massive fraud. It is completely untrue. In fact there are many more cases of eligible voters who didnt receive their mail ballots on time. And were therefore potentially disinfranchised. Especially outrageous for the president to cast doubt on elections as the nation mourns congressman john lewis who fought and bled for the right to vote. I guess the president doesnt put much stock in the sacrifice. As the news about one of the greatest hooer rows in the country has ever produced. The news was spreading friday night the president was up tweeting about all kind oof stuff. Congratulations to tammy bruce on guess hosting hannity. And managed fo tweet about john lewis. 13 hours later. Maybe he was using that time to reflect on the fact that john lewis actually helped make america great. I said it. Now i want to bring in a doctor. Director of the cardiac program the George Washington hospital and the former Senior Adviser to president obama. Good evening, thank you so much for joining us. Ge good to see you. Lets talk about encouraging masks. Holding tell rallies. Acknowledging theres a problem in florida and texas. Why did it take 140,000 people to die americans to die for the president to get to this point . I think the president is all about the president. And finally when he realized that the way the pandemic has rolled out in the United States was going to cost him the election, now he find theres a sense of urgency. The cdc recommended masks for everyone on april 3. 108 days ago. On april 3 the u. S. Had 7,600 deaths. In this interim with the president refusing to embrace universal mask wearing in the country. He still hasnt done that. He hasnt forcefully told the country, if you go out wear a mask. In the interim of 108 days, over 130,000 americans have died. My cousin, one of my closest friends father. How many tens of thousands of people have died as a consequence of this mans stubborn ignorance. If the president actually cared about getting this virus under control, wouldnt he issue a federal mask mandate . You were sort of intimating that. Wouldnt it be a federal mask mandate if he cared . Yeah. Why doesnt he come out tomorrow. And make a big splash in the news. Ill be the first person tomorrow night to stand up and applaud the president. Come out at briefing and say ladies and gentlemen the first thing im doing today is sign an executive order mandating masks to be worn in the United States in public. Do it. I want to bring you in. The president cares about poll numbers and they have been dismal. Is this a sign the president staff and maybe his new Campaign Manager are getting through about how how much trouble hes in . He wasnt posting pictures on twitter with him wearing a mask before. Its absolutely the case. The tweet was rather tortured. Some people say its patriotic to wear masks. Why does he say . Even on sunday you heard some of the same memes we have heard for weeks and months about testing, about the mortality rate, all wrong. And so, they maybe dragging him to another place. But rather slowly. The reason theyre dragging him is clear. In these polls just about a third of the country approves of his handling of the virus. That has been going steadily down and with it his over all approval number and the gap between himself and Vice President biden. So he is in a political mess here. It is a mess largely of his own making. And the question is whether he has the discipline and the ability to turn around and acknowledge his error and take a different direction. He did it before. Remember in march he was dismifsz of the virus one day and the next day he declared war and abandoned the war a few weeks after that. And said i knew it was a pandemic all along from the beginning. Yeah. Look, this has been i think the doctor had it right. What we have learned the president is has been unmasked by the virus and this crisis. He subject ated his duty to lead the country through the crisis and his political needs. Worried about the how the economy would be effected by the steps that had to be taken and might effect reelection chances hes been in denial and dill lugs. And as a result we had unnecessary death and suffering. And i dont know if he i hope as the doctor said i hope he turns 180 degrees starting tomorrow. When he begins his new 5 00 press conference show. But we havent seen that kind of discipline and ability to acknowledge error. That ability to change direction based on fact and well see if that happens tomorrow. Lets stick with this. A group of republican governors have weekly calls to compare notes on the pandemic and venting about mixed messages from the federal government. What does it say about the lack of leadership from the white house . These governors are now wrestling with this problem. He threw it to them. Remember he said this is the up to the states. The states have to take care of this. The governors most of them are trying to do that. Without the assistance or all the stance they need from the government. You can see why they are frustrated. Whats remarkable is he had an iron grip on this party of his for the last three and a half years. And now the virus is forcing governors to separate themselves from him. And he may have to line himself up back with the governors who are ordering masks. To be worn now. In order to keep his own supporters in line. Yeah. Thank you both. I appreciate your time. As you look at the various hot spots around the country, what are your concerns . What concerns you the most . Well, first of all they are hot spots. They are not the only hot spots. Well see over the course of the next month or two additional hot spots showing up all over the country. This virus is out of the control. Not just a few states. In most states. States that are still relatively lower in number. Look at the trend data its concerning. It looks like florida and texas. And california look like three to four weeks ago. I keep are minding people were in the early days of this pandemic. And its going to keep unfolding for the months ahead. Before i get to the other thing i thought it was supposed to go away and subside with the heat and the humidity . Well, you may recall thank you for having me on a guest multiple evenings. We had this discussion before. You recall as early as may i kept telling you we were at a few of the population infected and this thing was not going to rest until it had infected at least 50 to 70 of the population. And it would slow down. Its doing what we predicted. Once we will the our foot off the brake in terms of trying to contain it which other countries have done. It continues to burn. Think of this as a big National Forest fire looking for human wood to burn. Until we make a decision to suppress the virus activity it will keep doing what its doing. Professor, thank you for that. I know your feelings on wearing masks. With that said, Vice President pence and the White House Task force now emphasize the importance of masks on a call with governors. Listen to doctor birx. What would happen is if 100 masking in public areas, closing bars, limiting indoor gatherings and decreasing dining capacity. It came close to the impact of the sheltering in place. Do you believe that we can achieve that in this country . Given how this has gone so far . Well, first of all, let me be clear so everyone is aware of what my position is. Since you suggested my position. I say what i have said. You dont believe theres concrete evidence. Its how much do they contribute to protecting you. And so i say wear them. Lets not make a mistake about that. What i worry about and i see this happen over and over again, people once they wear one feel like im covered. Im taken care of. Its the distancing that is very critical. Its the most important thing we can do. Particularly inside. In crowds. In places like bars. And so all these things are additive. Not one is the decisive thing that says yes or no. Thats a vaccine. If masks were that good we wouldnt need vaccine. It can play a role. As i was portrayed today if you close bars and restaurants and that, we would have a hell of a a problem in the country. Its all about distancing. That drove down the numbers last spring. We really did create a lot of distancing and until we do an i driving this virus down to a level which we can test and trace on a routine basis like other countries and open up the economy again safely. Trial results for three vaccines were released today. One from university of ox foshd. All showing evidence they can safely produce an immune response. This is promising. Hold up promising . I liken it to riding a bike. The success is ride to the to the end of the block and not tip over. All they have done is dpet on the seat. What i mean is we would have expected these kind of results from the vaccines or they shouldnt have been put into humans to begin with. I dont want to sound pessimistic. Im glad we have the results. This is an important step going forward. Were still a long way from having safe and effective coronavirus vaccine. And as you know we have had this discussion also on the show. The fact that we dont understand the immunology of the virus infection. How are we protected . Is it durable immunity. Does it last more than a few months. Were hearing about more and more people with repeat infections. These are the kind of things we have to yet understand. How long is this protection last if we have it . Thats what well know whether we have a great vaccine or not. Professor, always learn something when youre on and the audience does as well. Thank you. President trump minimizing the coronavirus repeatedly claiming it boils down to the sniffles in kids. Why that claim is not only false but its dangerous. Over time, you go noseblind to the odors in your home. background music but others smell this. upbeat music thats why febreze plug has two alternating scents and eliminate odors for 1200 hours. Breathe happy febreze. La la la la la. President trump and his team are trying some new moves. We have been talking about them tonight to make the American People think he is on top of the coronavirus. After 140,000 americans got killed on his watch. Okay, until you remember this, among other things the president has compared this deadly pandemic repeatedly to the sniffles. Many of the cases are young people that heal in day. They have the sniffles and we put it down as a test. Many of them dont forget its like 99. 7 . People get better and quickly. We have cases all over the place. Most of those cases immediately get better and people are young people. They have sniffles and two days later they are fine. If we didnt do testing we would have no cases. Other countries dont test millions. 30 million tests. Youll have a kid with sniffles and say its coronavirus. Again we have kids with sniffles and all of a sudden we report a case. There are no danger whatsoever. I said to my people slow the testing down please. They test. And they test. We have tests of people who dont know whats going on. We have tests we have another one over here. The young man is ten years old. He has the sniffles. Hell recover in 15 minutes. The vast majority many people dont know they have it. They have it or have sniffles or a minor sign. And they recover. At the same time some people got sniffles and didnt even realize they had a problem. And they are supposedly immune. And some dont know they had it. It could be sniffles. A cold the sniffles and some cases they have nothing. They have it but boedont have anything. Its very light. You dont know theres a problem. Sometimes they get the sniffles. Think about this, put yourself into the future. Think about this. How all of these sound bites we play. How it will play in history. When you look back or listen to this over the course of history, the sound of his voice and the president down playing a sickness saying its equal to the sniffles. Just think about that. Sometimes we were so close to it we live in the moment. Think about when we look back what this is all going to embarrassing. Okay. Sorry, here we go. Since the virus hit the country about six months ago, more than 3. 8 million americans have been infected. Look at the chart. More than 60,000 cases are added every day. Thats why i say when we look back on this, what are we going to think . One of the biggest debates right now how we send kid back to school with the virus raging out of control and many states. The president pushing officials it reopen schools without offering any assurances that kids will be safe. And hes not the only one down playing the virus. Listen to this. This is republican governor of missouri. These kids have to get back to school. They are at the lowest risk possible. If they get covid19 which they will. And they will when they go to school. Theyre not going to the hospital. And setting in doctors offices. Theyll go home and get over it. Are you cool with that for your kids . Governor is cavalier about the danger of covid19 poses to children. Its important to point out that children have died from this disease. And if children become infected, they can potentially pass it onto older adults. In the home in their home who are more vulnerable. This weekend we learn about a study of ten of thousands of people in south korea. Study that concludes that children under ten years of age transmit the virus much less than adults do. However, it says that kids between ten and 19 can pass on the virus as easily as adults can. So much for the sniffles. Several mayors telling the Trump Administration to get federal troops out of their cities after scenes of unidentified authorities detaining protestors in portland. What would you say if yo saw in another country . Portlands mayor joins me next. r brands recommend cascade platinum. With the soaking, scrubbing and rinsing built right in. For sparklingclean dishes, the first time. Cascade platinum. Fascinating story were about to report. The mayor of six major cities wrote a letter to the attorney general and acting dhs secretary condemning federal forces in their city. The mayors heres what they write. Its unacceptable and chilling this administration formed and deployed the Rapid Deployment unit and sending federal authorities to conduct crowd control on city streets and detain individuals. That comes after more protests in portland over the weekend. Including shocking scenes like this one. Federal officers beating and pepper spraying a peaceful protestor. My next guest is one of the mayors who signed the letter. Portland mayor ted wheeler. Thank you so much. I appreciate your time. Im grateful youre on. I appreciate it. You have protests for 50 days now. The escalation and violence is really a recent change. What happened . This is just crazy. We were coming to the end of the nightly demonstrations at least the part where people were vandalizing things and some scattered acts of violence. We saw the energy coming out of that. We thought it would be done in a couple days. Then the federal government sent in dozens if not hundreds of troops, they engaged in what i describe as really abhorrent tactics. And basically they blew the lid off of this. Since they have been here we had huge crowds come downtown. More violence. More violence. They basically kicked the hornets nest. Lets put some of the video. This is so disturbing. You have camouflage men taking a protestors away in an unmarked van. And we have since learned that they are officers but you didnt ask for this assistance. How are local Law Enforcement officials and residents reacting. Theyre not happy. The Law Enforcement officials elected officials were unified. We didnt ask for the troops. We dont want them in the city. The tactic ts are very unamerican. Everybody should Pay Attention to this. Theyre coming into the city. Unmarked vans. Pull people off the street. They dont necessarily have probable cause. They dont actually identify who they are to the people theyre pulling into the van. There is really serious constitutional issues here. Couple things. Everyone they pull off the street have they been charged . They let go and not charge them. Not only not charge them in some cases they didnt even identify who they were. So we have people who have come back and said i feel like i was kidnapped. They didnt tell me why they pulled me in. Who they were. Why they were here. And thats not the kind of thing you see in america. What about the conservatives are very much prostate right. What does that say about this case . In this case they are tramping our states rights. Our governor and two United States senators are local Law Enforcement officials. Elected leaders, were all saying go away. They have definitely escalated the situation here. They created more danger for both local residents as well as local Law Enforcement. And we dont want them here. And the part thats scarier for us in the part i want other people in america to Pay Attention to is the president admitted that he is ending federal troops in to cities based on the political affiliation of the people who run the cities. In other words what he describes democrat cities. And that in my opinion is a blatant abuse of federal policing power. Its a threat to democracy. We should be concerned about this. Yeah. Besides being grammatically incorrect. It should be democratic cities. President trump is breaking the laws and the developments maybe unconstitutional. What recourse do you have . We have the court. Our state attorney general has sought legal action against the Trump Administration. She believes as do i that the tactics are unconstitutional. In the United States you still have to have probable cause. People still have rights. And those rights seem to be trampled on right now. Mayor, thank you for your time. I want to make sure you know about my pod cast. Silence is not an option. Tough questions about race in america and the social issue were dealing with as it results to race in the country. Find it on app pod cast or your favorite app. President trump defending confederate symbols as u. S. Grapples with its history of racism. How do we move forward when the president wont . In the middle of a pandemic that killed over 140,000 americans, United States is grappling with the history of racial inequality. After more than a month of protests and changes across american society, the president still defends confederate statues and symbols. How does a country move forward in im having on ibrahm, and he is good evening, how are you . Good evening, how are you . Im doing very well. Thank you for coming on to discuss this. And his fox news interview with chris wallace, President Trump said this about the effort to rename military bases named after confederate generals, here it is. I dont care what the military military says, im supposed to make the decision. We won two world wars. Go to the community where fort bragg is, in a great state, i love that state. Go to the community, say, how do you like the idea of renaming fort bragg . And then, what are we going to name it . We are going to name it after the reverend al sharpton, tell me what you are going to name, chris . General bragg was a traitor and a terrible general. And aside from that, he is evoking reverend al sharpton. That is telling, isnt it . It is. And i think to me, this is, kind of indisputable. The Vice President of the confed r confedracy, in 1862 said that the Confederate States were built on the great truth that the negro is not equal to the white man and slavery and subordination to the superior races is a natural condition can. It was based on white supremacy. To have a place of honor for any confederate general or anyone associated with the confederate general is a slap in the face of freedom and equality and black people. This is from last, no the former nfl player shannon sharp said this in response to marc cubans comments that the white people need to resist the urge of racism. If you talk tall way real about america and have an open and honest dialog with white america, it would go, it would tear down the foundation and the fabric in which america was built on. America was built on freedom. America was built on racism. And the backbone, the life blood, the economy of america was built on the backs of slaves. That is fact. How do we have that conversation . I think, you can simultaneously about that, for instance, in the american revolution, it same aimultaneou freed some people and kept other people slaves. You can talk about how some people were given their rights and at the same time, others were denied their rights. We just need to have an accurate rendering of American History and i hthink we should be starting to have the conversations and many of us are. I want to talk about your book because you say change takes more than not being racist. That people need to be actively antiracist. What does it look like in terms of action, ibram . Well, first and foremost, to do nothing in the face of racial inequality and we were talking about slavery, what happens to slavery . It continues. To do nothing in the face of jim crow, what happens . It continues. To do nothing in the face of police violence, it only continues. And so, to do nothing is to allow racism to persist and to be complicit with its maintenance. So the opposite of racist is not not racist, its antiracist. Its to actively challenge racist policy and power. Hmmm. On friday night, i have to talk to you about this. The u. S. Lost a hero, a hero in the Civil Rights Movement and a hero to american in general, when congressman john lewis passed away. What do we have to do to fight for equality and justice and the fight for Voting Rights . I mean, he was somebody who showed us for decades how as he said to get in to good trouble. And obviously many people are talking about good trouble. But i dont think that we are talking about what the opposite of that is. And the opposite of good trouble is being, is seeing injustice, you know, seeing inequality. Seeing racism and then, being fearful of challenging it, because you are fearful of getting had in to trouble. No, he wanted americans to get in to trouble and he spent his whole life, you know, getting in to trouble to create a just and equitable america, and he the courage to do that. And you know, ever since he was in his 20s and i think, every american should follow in his wake and had that type of courage. Ibram, the book is how to be an antiracist, you should pick it up and thank you for appearing tonight and being on the podcast. Everyone should listen to the episode where we talk about the history of the country and removal of monuments and how we had conversations that you just discussed. Thank you, ibram, be well. Of course. Thank you. Dozens of states in coronavirus surges as multiple hot spots struggle with not enough icu beds. What will it take to get the virus under control . This isnt about today. This is about the next 10 years. Pero hoy, tu puedes hacer algo. You can make a difference today by completing the census. The census impacts everything from hospitals, schools and public transportation. It is more important than ever before that everyones voice is heard.
