You remember marco rubio in 2016 when he was running for president and he was warning republicans, dont get so excited about these john Podesta Emails that were hacked because, and i quote, i want to warn my fellow republicans who may want to capitalize, tomorrow it could be us, and now it is. Its very dangerous. Its significant. On two levels. One this goes to senator rubios comments. One of the goals here is to bring discord and they want to bring confusion. Thats one way of interfering. Therefore, trying to undermine american democracy. The second level is very much about vladimir putin. You see these attacks on these conservative think tanks and conservative members. This is all about people who have been critical of vladimir putin. Its a very direct strike against those who are criticizing him and his leadership in russia. That also makes this extremely significant and worrisome. Lets listen to National Security adviser john bolton. He was on abc this weekend. I think what he said about other countries and potential election interference now is even more relevant given what we have seen overnight. Lets listen to him. I can say definitively that its a sufficient National Security concern about chinese meddling, iranian meddling and north korean meddling that were trying steps to try to prevent it. Its all four of those countries. Theres Something Different from what he did there than the president often says, well, it could be russia but it could be other ones, too. He is saying its russia and by the way, there are other nefarious actors as well. Whats your read . Well, redirecting a little bit away from the question. Trying to draw the focus off of russia and then again by doing so drawing the focus off President Trump and his constant tweets and the problems and concerns that he is causing within his own administration. We shouldnt be pollyanna and think countries dont engage in spying or espionage. President trump has held himself up to be a great deal maker, somebody who can sit across a Negotiating Table and you have to wonder all the branchs he continues to try to hand over to russia, he seems to be getting a dead stick in return from vladimir putin. Shouldnt putin be coming to the table maybe offering a detente on this espionage or a cooldown . We are seeing him increase it. Were seeing President Trump hasnt seemed to grasp it. The fact it was a private corporation, publically traded company but the private sector that found this, how important is that in terms of really everybody coming together to get at this . Clearly, intelligence government cant do it on their own. Thats right. I believe its very significant for microsoft to do this and get out in front of the federal government in saying what they found and what they have done about it. It does show i think to the credit of President Trumps National Security team that they have made progress in working with private industry and these hightech companes to do more and to say more and to acknowledge more about not only what they are see Gs Oing Out T but what theyre doing about things out there in cyberspace. I think this is encouraging. Its a worrisome report. We should take heed of what the russians continue to try to do. Sources tell cnn the president is unsettled over all of it. Theres important New Washington post reporting that notes that mcgahn doesnt think he said anything at all that implicated the president. least mcgahns attorney told the president s lawyers, there may have been 30 hours of them talking to investigators, but there was nothing in those 30 hours that implicated the president in any legal wrongdoing. Whats your read . Well, you know, i think the reason that the president and so many around him are unsettled by the revelations about don mcgahn over the weekend is that they dont know. They can give the president assurances about what he said. But the fact that the cooperation was so long and so extensive and it wasnt widely known, even in the white house that he was cooperating so extensively. You had trump tweet, i authorized all of this. Its fine. Nothing to worry about. That may be the case. We shouldnt assume just because he gave so much time to investigators that theres definitely something there or that he had turned on the president , because it does seem he does not believe that was the case. When it comes to the legal
strategy, which some like steve bannon are saying this is the worst legal strategy by the president s attorneys at the time, but it is what it is and it is what happened. Cnn learned the lawyers at that time when they were saying, go out and be as transparent, were calculating, they didnt have solid legal ground to stand on to fight this. Mcgahn is a federal employee. He would be compelled to be transparent and open. Here is how the president s personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani now reads it. I knew not to worry about it because if the president said anything criminal to the counsel of the white house, mcgahn wouldnt be there now. Mcgahn as a matter of legal ethics and possibly law would have to quit. What do you think . Yeah, i mean, giuliani is right. He would have had to quit. I think look, i actually personally think it was a good idea to have mcgahn go out
there. If they believe that they have nothing to be afraid of, then it was the right move to make. It was the right thing to say im sending you off with my blessings. Go do it. Report back and we have nothing to be afraid of. When its framed as 30 hours, it seep seems like oh, my god. When you step back and think 30 hours over how much period of time . Three days. Three days . You know, still 30 all one day seems like when you spread it out over a few days, its not that bad. Mcgahn is channelling through his lawyers that, look, i didnt really say anything that hurt the president. Maybe the president should just let it be and let the chips fall where they may. I dont know. The former white House Counsel and independent counsel who i had on this show yesterday morning and last night said 30 hours is like, wow, big. Its a lot. I think, look, mcgahn may not have said anything himself that accused the president of wrongdoing, implicated the president of wrongdoing. He is giving investigators information. They can take that information and they can collate it with other information to connect the dots. When any witness gives information to investigators, they are not necessarily confessing or implicating or anything else. All of that information is extremely valuable to prosecutors or investigators who are looking to pool together a lot of information to make a case toward whatever they are making a case toward. I think one other thing thats important here is, so much of this has to do with the turnover that has happened in the white house in general and also specifically on the legal team. There have been so many lawyers come in and out and quit because
they didnt like the job, that there is a lot of confusion. Everybody is not necessarily on the same page with this stuff. Selena, on the issue of clearances, which is staying in the news cycle. The president is keeping it in the news cycle with his tweets this morning. Conservative radio host and also former editor at large of Breitbart New S ben shapiro sai. Trump likes pardons and Security Clearances, anything he can treat as a reward or punishment in this governmental version of the apprentice. He is a conservative radio host. He has been critical of the president when he thinks he needs to be. Is he right on that . Yeah. I actually dont think he is wrong on that. Look, i think brennan was a completely different animal than the rest of all of the other people that appear on television within our own network that talk that held high positions in intelligence like mr. Clapper. They were never saying they werent strident in their tone and in their analysis. They also werent calling his behavior treasonous. They werent going on twitter and being bombastic. Brennan approached this in a very political way. When you watch clapper and when you watch other people, you see its more measured, its more analytical. Brennan makes a great foil for the president. They have deliberated for more than 21 hours. Now they are in day four, deciding the fate of President Trumps excampaign chief Paul Manafort. While they are doing that, Everyone Else is waiting it out. Those inside the courtroom doing crossword puzzles, waiting outside of the courthouse, reporters ready for an update. You have manaforts entire defense team with his wife taking their position at what has become a regular corner table for them as they wait. Lets talk about what is at stake and what the experts think. Good morning to you. How would you look at this . The longer the jury is taking, good sign, bad sign for manafort . Or we have no idea . I think its a good sign for manafort that its taken this long. If there was going to be a quick verdict here, it was not going to be for manafort. It was going to be for the prosecution, because theres a lot of evidence in this case and documents and emails that are very incriminating and dont look good for manafort. The fact that the jury is taking its time is good for him, because it means they are careful. It potentially means theres a holdout or two. A lot of times what happens is
that theres one or two people who are skeptical or concerned. They have a different view than the rest. What this jury appears to be doing is going through the evidence very carefully, taking their time, going through each of the 18 counts. One thing people at home should remember is that not only are there 18 counts, which is essentially 18 separate crimes that are being charged here, but for under each of the crimes there are a number of different findings that the jury has to make to determine whether he is guilty. A lot of times juror are looking for a shortcut. Everyone wants to go home. They are taking this very carefully. They know this is a high profile case. Not a lot of people are talking about a potential of a hung jury here. It could happen. You need a unanimous decision by this jury in a criminal case like this. What do you think . It is certainly a possibility. As the deliberations drag
longer, it has to be a growing concern on the minds of the government. Just to be clear, you can have a hung jury on some counts and not others. That happened famously in the case of rod bagoyavich. Owe h they convicted him on one. There would be another trial potentially like for him. Certainly, i imagine the president would cease upon that as a victory and use that to attack the mueller investigation. If manafort is found guilty, if he is, he has this case coming up, another trial, big trial, lots of counts against him, Money Laundering in d. C. In a few weeks. If he is found guilty, could he cooperate, could he plea after that with muellers team . He could. His leaverage is lower. He has already been convicted on these counts. Theres less that mueller would be willing to do for him. I think it would be a good move
for him. I think he would want to get the sentencing on all of the crimes in front of judge ellis who has a better view of manafort than the judge in d. C. We have been told a body has been located in rural iowa. Investigators are working to confirm the identity of the body. Their statement this morning said this is in relation to that missing Iowa University student. There she is. Tibbetts was seen july 18 jogging in the evening in a Small Community of brooklyn, iowa, an hour east of des moines. Her family says they reported her missing the next day after she did not show up for work at a local day care. After more than 1500 tips have poured in, 500 interviews have been done with authorities, they do say that a body has been found. Lets go to athena jones who has been covering this. Its notable that they put out this news in relation to the
tibbetts case. We dont know at this point. The condition of the body or who it is. Reporter thats right. We know that theres going to be a press Conference Held later today, 5 00 p. M. Eastern. Thats when we expect to learn some more information. We dont know where this body was found. We dont know anything about a cause of death. As you mentioned, authorities investigators are working to confirm the identity of this body. If this body is, in fact, this missing University Of Iowa student, its devastating news for her family, for her friends, her loved ones. She went missing in mid july. It was july 18 when she was last spotted jogging in this community about an hour east of des moines. Fbi has been involved in the search. Extensive interviews and now a body discovered. She was one of the first women to come out and publicly accuse Harvey Weinstein of rape. What else have we learned about this . We are learning the los angeles Sheriffs Department is looking into this. Kim severson you spoke with her last night she gave more insight. Shes the writer of the New York Times article saying that this alleged Sexual Asasault happened in the morning at a hotel in california in 2013. The l. A. County Sheriffs Department says they are aware of this alleged incident. They also go on to say, to date,
the lasd has not located any Police Report alleging criminal activity within our jurisdiction in relation to this incident after becoming aware of the allegations. The lasds special Victims Bureau is attempting to reach out to the reported victim and or his representatives. We have reached out to the alleged victim in this case. Jimmy bennett. The attorneys have not gotten back to us. In regards to whether they have been contacted by the Sheriffs Department or their client, mr. Bennett at all. You know, you are right, she was a very early accuser of Harvey Weinstein, one of the first to publically come out and accuse him of rape along with rose mcgowan. People are looking at her story. Does this mean shes lying about what she says happened to her with Harvey Weinstein in 1997 . Absolutely not. I think that people are looking at this with a more skeptical eye because of these new allegations. As they should. We should say though, however, Harvey Weinsteins team has jumped on this. They are saying, her conduct
should give everyone pause and it should show everyone how poorly these allegations against mr. Weinstein were vetted. Her allegations have nothing to do with the current charges against him. Nothing she has said stems from any of the charges that he is facing right now. Also when you talk about the movement as a whole, the me too movement as a whole, i did speak last night on erins show with the reporter who broke the story, these encrypted emails sent to her with documents, were sent to her personal account. Not just the New York Times, to her account. She was digging on all of this. Here is what she said about the Bigger Picture here. One person does not make an entire movement. We dont know what miss argentos side of this was. The idea this one incident would unravel an entire case against Harvey Weinstein and this young social movement that we find ourselves in the middle of is crazy. She was cautioning against it. The feedback i have been hearing after this story broke yesterday talking to people that are involved in the me too movement, what they said go with me here a little bit. When i first heard this, they were i kind of pulled back and said, what . They said what they believe this actually strengths the movement, having Something Like this happen. They said, what it shows is that no one is above reproach. It shows that not just women, that men have been victims, too. It also shows that change is tough and that there are going to be things that happen that arent pretty. There are going to be issues they have to face. What it does is strengthen their voice, because it will galvanize them more. Because this has happened we have not heard from her or heard her side of the story. Because this has happened, it gives them a stronger voice to say listen, we are going to stand together. Were still going to tell our stories. No matter what. No matter who is the latest to
be accused. Just remind people of the relationship between these two, if you would. Jimmy bennett was 17 at the time this allegedly occurred. He asked a 10yearold who is in remission from cancer to sign his jersey. Davis wore it during the game. You could clearly see it while he was batting. Guess what . Davis hit a home run in the third inning. It was a blast. Davis said after the game, he thought about anthony while he was rounding the bases and hopefully that home run brought him some joy.
