Multiple stabbings took place. A man entered the Shopping Centre with a knife, five people were killed, several others are in hospital right now with serious critical conditions. You can see from these live pictures, Armed Police Presence still there. The area is still in lockdown. We dont know the motive for this attack but police saying, as things stand, they believed that he acted alone and they dont believe there is a continuing threat. As we just look at the various different, three different lives feeds we have on the scene right now. I will take you back a couple of hours to this afternoon when there was still daylight and we have these pictures of people basically being evacuated from the Shopping Centre. You can imagine a hugely busy Shopping Centre, hundreds of people inside, and as soon as the alarm was raised, police managed to get hundreds of people out of that Shopping Centre. Now, nearby when this happened, about 3 20 p m local time in sydney, when that happened a Police Officer, a Single Police officer was nearby. She went into the Shopping Centre and approached the man with the knife. When the man with a knife phrased it, she discharged her weapon and shot him a man with a knife raised it. We have heard since from the Prime Minister that this Police Officer acted heroically and no doubt saved lives, saved a further loss of life. We do know that five people were killed at the scene in the Shopping Centre and several others, including a young child, taken to hospital. Ijust want to give you a wider idea of the geography here. We can take a quick look at the map to give you an idea of where we are. This is of course australia, sydney, in the east. This is an area, Westfield Bondi, a very well known shopping in the area, extremely busy and everyone who knows sydney would know that area certainly would have been very busy at the time. I just want to bring at the time. Ijust want to bring in at the time. Ijust want to bring in a Reporter Standing by for us. Thank you for coming on the programme, the mayor of the City Of Clarence in tasmania. Bring us up to date with your thoughts and reaction right now. Ml; your thoughts and reaction right now. G. ,. Your thoughts and reaction right now. G. , your thoughts and reaction right now. G. , now. My thoughts and prayers are with their families now. My thoughts and prayers are with their families of now. My thoughts and prayers are with their families of those with their families of those deceased who sadly wont be going home to loved ones this evening. I was at Westfield Bondi junction earlier this afternoon with my two children and thankfully we are all safe but it was a terrifying experience for anyone that was there today. Thousands of people that heard the gunshot rang out, obviously more so those that witnessed the Knife Wielding perpetrator and sadly, as we have learned in recent hours, there had been five who have sadly died. So this is not something we are used to in australia. This is not the australia i know and this is extraordinarily sad on so many levels, but particularly for those families whose loved ones will be with them this evening. Just families whose loved ones will be with them this evening. Families whose loved ones will be with them this evening. Just talk us throu~h with them this evening. Just talk us through again. With them this evening. Just talk us through again. If with them this evening. Just talk us through again, if you with them this evening. It, to be honest, it was uuite heard. It, to be honest, it was quite surreal. Heard. It, to be honest, it was quite surreal. It heard. It, to be honest, it was quite surreal. It was heard. It, to be honest, it was quite surreal. It was a heard. It, to be honest, it was| quite surreal. It was a Birthday Lunch for my children and myself. We had done some shopping after lunch. We were at the top of the escalators at the ground level floor, we had been downstairs buying books from the book store and i heard two gunshots ring out and i grew up on a farm so i didnt hang around to ask what the noise was. I grabbed the kids under either arm and just run to the dart across the road and with hundreds of other people entered nearby stars. It was bedlam. It was something we are not used to here in australia and it was not something i would wish upon anyone to experience ever again. Would wish upon anyone to experience everagain. I would wish upon anyone to experience ever again. I was fortunate to have my loved ones with me. There were others outside, extraordinarily distraught because he had been separated from their loved ones and there wasnt a great deal of understanding as to what was going on, except to say that the First Responders, the police force and ambulance service, where extraordinarily quick to be on the scene and the special Tactical Response unit from New South Wales police was also there within 20 to 30 minutes and we have since learned that a lone 30 minutes and we have since learned that a [one female Police Inspector brought out the alleged perpetrator. So it is not something we are used to in australia. It is sad on so many levels, particularly for those who wont be with The Loved Ones this evening because they are sadly deceased. this evening because they are sadly deceased. ~. , deceased. Indeed. And i was captivated deceased. Indeed. And i was captivated by deceased. Indeed. And i was captivated by your deceased. Indeed. The noise that the police i and ambulance sirens, the helicopter in the air, the special Tactical Response unit, the two gunshot we heard, but clearly there is pandemonium at this time. Your primal instincts hit in and those that dont have loved ones are, i think tend to think the worst, just the unknown. And sadly far some they did lose loved ones today and this is not something we are used to here in australia at all, and it is a bit about call i think there are many of we dont know what motivation was and im sure thatll come to light in coming weeks but a lot of distressed individuals. This is a saturday afternoon, 2a degrees, Beautiful Sydney Gay and the last thing you would expect this for a Knife Wielding individual are beautiful sydney day. The last thing you would expect is a Knife Wielding individual to kill five individuals. Decide on so many levels. Thank you comin decide on so many levels. It is ve aood assessment of things so far . It is very good to assessment of things so far . It is very good to have assessment of things so far . It 3 very good to have the confirmation that there was just one attacker and that there was just one attacker and that there was just one attacker and that the situation was responded to so professionally and so well. A mother and young child were responded to passers by, and there are a lot of stories like that, sadly five people lost, nine people stabbed and five confirmed dead. The knifeman also shot dead when confronted by that lone, very brave lone Police Officer so that means we dont have any Mate Information yet. Please no doubt are privatising identifying him, looking for personal effects including a mobile phone and trying to look at online footprint, trying to figure out motive and background. The response been very professional. No speculation aloud, nothing is ruled in or out and i think that is a measure of maturity, there might have been much speculation and panic but this is a very calm and professional response from all. Lets pick up on that point because in the last 90 minutes or so we heard that update from police New South Wales saying, as things stand, they are confident this person acted alone and there was no continuing threat. Of course that was a current situation, things can change but that was a very, very clear statement from the police and also saying there was nothing at the scene to indicate a motive or ideology. Can you talk to was a bit about that, praising, what the thought would be behind putting it like that . The thought would be behind putting it like that . , like that . The police have any conscience like that . The police have any conscience at like that . The police have any conscience at the like that . The police have any conscience at the public like that . The police have any conscience at the public will i conscience at the public will immediately wonder why someone would do this and could it be a political cause, could it be terrorism . They are very conscious of the fact it is imparted to shut down speculation and remain calm and work on the basis of fact. Of responded, they must respond regardless and then they try and figure out what the motivation might be. Perhaps already they already know something of the online footprint of this individual but they will only speak about it when they are ready. The sort of incidents are very rare in australia so if it turned out that the person was acting on some sort of political motivation that would also be very rare. The most common kind of incident is Domestic Violence but that doesnt appear to be the case because the knifeman was attacking complete strangers and that is a very uncommon occurrence. Sol complete strangers and that is a very uncommon occurrence. So i think given all the experience of the last decade with attacks, many attributed to terrorism, it is significant there is a level of maturity both with media and place under the responders to recognise we can speak about anything until we can confirm the fact that might establish a motive and the fact they said no one else is involved is very reassuring, although it doesnt bring back those five lives lost. As you asked, area, this is a very popular Shopping Centre in bondijunction. Multiple levels of shopped there, very large, westfield. Bbc have heard from people who were there as customers are in shops and many people had to respond very quickly. One father said he grabbed a kid in each arm and ran away. And another shopkeeper said he went very quickly to try and shut the front door of his actual start and keep everyone he was inside already safe and he said that he could see another man fighting with that suspect. He was trying to throw a pole down the escalator. And we also heard details about this senior Police Officer who was very quickly unseen and the suspect and then ultimately he was shot dead. So a lot of people around. This was a busy, busy Shopping Centre on a saturday afternoon. This happened just before 4pm so a very busy time and because of the geography of this Shopping Centre, multiple layers, it would have been very difficult to get everyone quickly but we do know that there were hundreds of people evacuated onto the streets and many people made it out without injuries. It is something you see now, you are grateful we dont go through this in australia, but i think i knife is one thing when it is far away from you and you can see it and it is not in immediate danger but contracts are a completely different thing because you dont know where they are coming from, they can get you from a distance so i think that certainly panic everyone and i think we all raced back into the gym at the time, thinking, what is going on here . Courtney is still with us. New South Wales Police are going to speak again to the media in about 45 minutes time but i do have some extra details here, including the fact that there is now an extra fatality. A total of six people were fatally stabbed in this incident and we know the offender was also shot dead at the scene. The police have said this all unfolded at about 3 30pm at the Westfield Bondi junction and an officer attached to that police force was in the area and allegedly confronted the man with a knife. It is said that the man then lunged at the officer before he was fatally shot. This is the latest information that we have from the New South Wales police. We are told that the officer then conducted at cpr on the alleged offender as well as other people at the scene who had suffered injuries until paramedics arrived and we know that their Ambulance Services arrived shortly afterwards. Among those injured is a small child, just a nine month old, and several people had been taken to various hospitals around sydney for treatment after receiving stab wounds and other injuries in the chaos at unfolded. We have got a couple of new details about what actually happened. Lets just try and put that together with the statement we have from New South Wales police, that on camera briefing on the last couple of hours. It isjust briefing on the last couple of hours. It is just after three oclock in the afternoon, in the Shopping Centre, a man enters and then leaves and then a short time later the same man comes back into the Shopping Centre, westfield Shopping Centre, with a knife of some description, we know it is a night but we dont have any more details on that. We were told initially that this Police Officer, he was nearby, single, on a into the Shopping Centre guided by members of the public, clearly witnesses seeing the public, clearly witnesses seeing the commotion, and went towards the man holding the knife. The words used by the Police Officer in the briefing a couple of hours ago where that that night was then raised in her direction, the Police Officers direction, she discharged her weapon and the language here is along those lines but slightly different. So what is that language now . That moment of confrontation with stimac this is directly from the statement from New South Wales police. It says an officer attached from New South Wales police. It says an officer attached to from New South Wales police. The man allegedly lunged at the officer before being fatally shot. The officer conducted cpr until the arrival of New South Wales Ambulance Paramedics who worked on the man, however, he could not be revived. It has been confirmed that the man fatally stabbed at six people in the centre before he was shot and the statement goes on to say that the centre is now become a crime scene and it is investigated by the State Homicide Squad and the central metropolitan region. So we heard earlier from central metropolitan region. So we heard earlierfrom placing they central metropolitan region.
