Most of the migrants have been to several countries before reaching the coast of libya. You have Smuggling Networks that operate in all of these countries countries. Some of the heads of these networks are not in libya. According to the coast guard, their point of view is if you want to go after the smugglers, you are going to have to carry out operations in several countries. Certainly a difficult task for the eu. Sara and serud from areatrea a micro biologist who dreams of getting a ph. D. In europe. She arrived this week after eight days at sea. They paid about 3,000 u. S. Dollars each to the smugglers. Polls have opened in the west african country of togo where the president is a clear favorite to win another term. His family has ruled the country for 48 years since his father seized power in a military coup in 1967. He ruled unchallenged for more than 20 years. He faced a multiparty election for the first time in 1993 and won. He was then reelected in 1998 and in 2003, a year after term limits were removed from the constitution to allow him to run. Following the death in 309, his 39yearold son followed him. A report now from the capital. This is the polling station where the main opposition was a little earlier. The whole place went wild as they saw the opposition leaders inspect the different polling stations after he cast his vote. Togos election is significant because the incumbent is going for a third term in. Now, this debate about whether the president should have a third term is something thats being talked about across the continent and in this west african region there are only two countries where there are no president ial term limits. Thats here in gambia. So that is why there is a lot of attention and focus on this election and just in the neighboring area late last year the then president was forced out of office when he tried to change the constitution so he could run for a third time. Popular protest pushed him out. Now, we have a situation in togo where the world is watching but, also from a local perspective, this is the first time the local observers will have the opportunity to compare their results with the official results. So, if there are any discrepancies, this is something that is going to be highlighted quite quickly is it will be up to the head of the Electoral Commission to deal with this. The ruling party says the president can run for a third election term in june. However, the countrys opposition says the decision violates the terms of the constitution. The 2005 agreement which ended the countrys civil war says the president can only serve two terms. The president says no one will stand in the way of the ruling partys decision.
