Transcripts For MSNBC The Beat With Ari Melber 20241002

Welcome to The Beat im ari melber. The United States is readying for tonights big debate between Governor Walz and Jd Vance, the senator. Both Running Mates of trump and harris. This is the last debate of the president ial campaign. It is significant. Josh shapiro, the governor of the Swing State of pennsylvania will join us live in a moment. That is coming up in a few moments. The other big story is the top international news in the world and it is coming out of The Middle East where iran has attacked israel today. It is an attack coming after israels strikes on hezbollah in lebanon. That is some of the scene, the Air Raid sirens and the skies ablaze. The missiles which would have the power to destroy entire buildings. They were largely intercepted. Our sourcing comes from israel and the United States. The defense there was able to intercept the vast majority of the missiles. The reports are there are no casualties in israel from the many attempted strikes. One palestinian man was killed by Shrapnel On the west bank. This coming hours after israel launched an incursion into south lebanon. The United States overseeing the response from the Situation Room. A Brandnew Photograph released from inside the Situation Room. Both have now spoken out on irans attack. The attack appears to have been defeated and ineffective. Testament to israel military capability and u. S. Military. We will never hesitate to take whatever action is necessary to defend u. S. Forces and interests against iran and iranbacked terrorists. This is a fastmoving story. Erin what can you tell us on the ground . Reporter hey there, ari. Well, i was just speaking via zoom with an Israel Military Spokesman in Central Israel. This was the largest ballistic Missile Attack in israels history. They are taking this extraordinarily seriously. 80 missiles hitting various points, most intercepted by the Iron Dome System and other Air Defense systems. He also pointed to a coalition of countries that came to israels defense, led by the United States although he wouldnt go into specifics in terms of what countries were involved in that effort. But he was pointing to the damage done even though most of the missiles were intercepted, some did make it through. He was at a building in a residential neighborhood that was hit by Missile Shrapnel and showed me on zoom some of the damage. I want you to Take A Look. We are here in Central Israel where shrapnel has a potential to blowup the area, a residential area in Central Israel. What are we looking at there . This is near a residential area. There were shops here. You can see shrapnel from one of those ballistic missiles that fell nearby here. We cant go to the site. It is unsafe. But this is an area of collateral damage. Now the Big Question becomes how will israel respond. We did hear from the Prime Minister at the beginning of his political security cabinet meeting. The response will be a political decision on the part of his government. He said iran made a big Mistake Tonight and it will pay for it. Today president biden reiterated the administrations support for israel. Also a testament to intensive planning between United States and israel to anticipate and defend against the brazen attack that we expected. Make no mistake, the United States is fully, fully supportive of israel. I want to bring in david, a foreign Policy Expert who worked in the clinton administration. How are you david . Good. David, tell us your understanding of what is happening at this hour. Well, i think at this hour people are waiting to see how many steps that we take up the Escalatory Ladder at this point. There is an expectation that the israelis are likely to strike iran, possibly strike Oil And Gas facilities and possibly strike part of their nuclear program and may do it as early as this evening. Last evening we were talking about the incursion into lebanon could lead to escalation. Today we saw that. Tomorrow we will be speaking about the next step in this escalation. I do think that it is important that both the president and the Vice President made it clear that the United States is standing with israel and is working to help defend israel against this unprecedented attack. David, i think the audience can hear you. I did lose your audience. When you look at what the administration has done thus far. Tonight we will hear from the Running Mate to harris. What else do you think is important that the United States wants to get across and is there any bipartisanship about the policies for the United States ahead in the region. There should be. This is the kind of situation where there has been unity in the past. That is not what we heard today. We heard Donald Trump at a rally going through his litany of this would never have happened under my watch, except it did happen. There was a Missile Attack on u. S. Troops in iraq to which he did not respond. He said that he would be tougher. When he pulled out of the iran nuclear deal. Today they are weeks or months away. Today is much more dangerous because of him, and you know he was ranting on about other kinds of things, you know. An app on Kamala Harris Phone by which she could call up cartels to come up and come border. In other words he wasnt serious. Jd Vance Isnt serious about this type of things. The president , the Vice President in the Situation Room today were showing what real leadership in a crisis like this looks like, and i think that will be the contrast that a lot of people are going to see during the Debate Tonight. Who is ready for this. Which side is prepared to lead because this crisis is not going away. David, thank you for joining us On A Very Volatile Set of developments in the region. The middle east is certain to be a topic of Debate Tonight. Tim Walz And Jd vance will square off. Right now we have a newsmaking guest. The governor of the state of pennsylvania. You can see him there with Vice President harris. Shapiro is one of The Partys national stars. Thanks for being here. Great To Be With You ari. Great to have you. We will get in To Domestic Policy and politics, all of that. First i would get your thoughts on the volatile situation in The Middle East, the iranian attack on israel and how it will play in to the Debate Tonight. We heard a little from the Vice President. What do you expect . This is obviously an unprecedented attack on isel, and presumably based on the comments made it will be met with a swift response. Dont forget iran is the largest exporter of terrorism Around The World includings it proxy, hezbollah, who has been attacking israel from the north for the better part of the last year. This is a serious and a dangerous and a volatile situation. We need to make sure that iran pays a price for their unprecedented attack. Turning to the domestic policies in the debate. We looked how Jd Vance sounded in his past debate. Abortion was a big issue then. Lets Take A Look how he sounded in that debate. I recognize a lot of people are pro choice. I was raised by a woman, old School Democrat who believed abortion should be safe, legal, rare. That is not congressmans ryan view. I think abortion and reproductive freedom is a Center Issue in the election and on peoples minds. I mean Donald Trump and his sidekick, Jd Vance, will sign a national abortion ban. They will take away power from governors like me who have protected women in our home states. I think that it is incredibly dangerous. I expect that Tim Walz is going to make that case and make it clear that there is an incredible contrast in this race between where Jd Vance and Donald Trump are as compared to Kamala Harris and Tim Walz. I think this is a central issue. Jd vance is out of step with the american people. Yeah. There is a lot of talk about the rust belt, the Blue Wall, whatever you want to call it. If you poll on these candidates, and i cautioned people to take it all with a grain of salt. They are polling in the 40s there, Walz And vance. There is the idea that Jd Vance has a kind of a better edge for the republican party. I want to read one thing from The Atlantic for you. They argue vance can squeeze trumpism and produce something looking like a coherent ideology, the counter to trumps rambling and rallying speech. With the fact that trump did not do great in the last debate. He could use a polish tonight. I dont think Jd Vance has been polished or coherent. In addition to that he is lying to the american people about springfield, ohio. He took an oath of office to preserve and protect. He lies to the mooept because he is lying to himself about Donald Trump. The guy probably took a Debate Class or two at yale. It does not scape the fact that what he is selling is not something that people are buying. He continues to lie about his home state. I do not expect him to do well this evening. Is goofy the new weird . I dont know, more importantly they say you are not talking about anything that will make my life better. Elections are about the future. They are about electing people that are going to make our lives better. Make it more affordable. Make us safer At Home and abroad. Jd Vance And Donald trump have offered no serious policies and no serious plans or vision on how to do that for the american people. A lot of people in The Party think you are a good communicator. The next question will be good to get your responses on. There are attacks on Kamala Harris and Tim Walz that are sort of lies or out of bounds. And there are policy questions about her evolution. I am sure you are familiar with some of this. I will put up on the stances. Washington post said the policies shifted. Harris in 2019 embraced the Fracking Ban and supported medicare for all. Advocating a polishing private health insurance. Supreme court reform, it is interesting. Now she is as, well, Supreme Court reforms like the ethics reforms and perhaps term limits. But not going as far as she did in 2019. A lot of people want a stronger stance. Five years ago she had one. Do you think we will hear about that at the Debate Tonight . It is important to state your views and not shut yourself off from the opinions of other people. Considering yourself how you evolve on a particular issue. Fracking, she was against it and after listening to others she understands how it makes our economy stronger. It puts people to work. I think it is a sign of strength. I will say for myself i ran for Attorney General on a platform of supporting the death penalty. But i couldnt sign off on the prospect of capital punishment. After a few weeks sitting in the chair when i was faced to signing my first execution warrant, i did not sign it. I stood up to the good people of pennsylvania and said i had changed my views. I explained why. I explained how the conversations that i had with pennsylvanians, the conversations that i had with my children changed my views and helped me to evolve. I dont expect all of your viewers to agree with me on that just as sure as i am that they dont agree with the Vice President on all issues. It is interesting. I appreciate you sharing that. As a governor that is one of the most solid obligations that you have. Literally life and death. It is Debate Night. Final item is just for fun, governor. We have some fun. Are you prepared for a moderate amount of fun . I love fun. Is it about my phillies . No. But it is about you. It has been observed that sometimes, some people think you sound somewhat like president obama. You know how i know this . Here is a 78yearold Billionaire who has not stopped whining about his problem. Are you ready to look the next president of the United States in the eye and Say Hello Madam president. We are ready for a president Kamala Harris. Nobody is saying that it is an exact impression. But here you are on Debate Night. Are you aware of sounding like obama or have you tried to sound like obama . The floor is yours. One of those clips i had a Greg Brady moment. It sounded like my voice was changing there. Barak obama is the greatest of my lifetime. I certainly dont try to emulate him. Nobody can. The fact that, you know some people think i might be all right at Public Speakg is really kind. But no. He is the best. He is one of one. Accurate and political consider. But you never tried . Of course not. Of course not. We had to ask. How fun was that for you . Fun and i am happy to talk about the phillies. Next time. Governor shapiro, appreciate you spending time with us on a very big night. Thanks. Great To Be With You. This is the last scheduled debate of the whole election cycle. Debates party. Consider this new attack ad. You still dont have a plan. I have concepts of a plan. There are concepts and options we have to do that. You have no plan. When Donald Trump was president he tried to get rid of the affordable care act. Our next guest, howard dean, we have concepts of a guest and a great sweater. We are back in 90 seconds. T swe. We are back in 90 seconds. Ing y. You need to hire. I need indeed. Indeed you do. Sponsored jobs on indeed are two and a half times faster to first hire. Visit indeed. Com hire i know about 20 of you, and youre rich as hell. Were going to give you tax cuts. Im not rich as hell. Im the one that really needs the break, not the people that are already rich and have the money. The 1 dont serve anybody but themselves. So for them to get a tax break, no, thats not cool. Kamala harris is going to make billionaires pay their fair share, and shes going to cut taxes for working people like me. Im buddy, and im not rich as hell, and im voting for Kamala Harris. Ff pac is responsible for the content of this ad. Your best defense against erosion and cavities is strong enamel. Nothing beats it. I recommend pronamel active shield because it actively shields the enamel to defend against erosion and cavities. I think that this product is a gamechanger for my patients. Try pronamel mouthwash. I dont have the luxury of being partisan. I dont have the luxury of being rigid. What we need in education and in the military is solutions. I live in the world that most of you live in. Tim walz in his first debate back in 2006. Joining us as promised is our concept of a guest, howard dean. Doctor, governor. Welcome back. Thanks for having me. The concept of a guest. We show the younger Tim Walz there, but you recognize the guy. I just talked to governor shapiro. What do you see specifically as Tim Walzs strengths . His strength is to be a real person. I think that will do him very, very well. This is a solid guy. Vance is not solid. The dnc is having fun, trolling a little bit. 2025hq projected on to trump tower. That is their way of trying to get it back in the news. That is a policy attack. It is one that found a foothold. The positive rating for 2025 is below 10 , below 4 sometimes in the polls. Does that come up and how much do they use the debate to bring it back to the person at the top of the picket, Donald Trump. Nobody is going to vote for vance or walz. It will be about what kind of a light you can shed on the capability of the people that are running for president of the United States. If you set out to alienate women, i dont know how you can do a better job than vance has. All walz has to do is show he is a solid, decent person. There is a lot of talk about the moderators and the structure. Most of that is trump echo. Open mic, unmuted approach. Your thoughts on how that plays in. I think that is going to be tough. Vance is a good debater. That is not a complement. He is good at shifting the subject, not answering the question, throwing things in a different direction. I wish they had a muted mic. I expect vance to be fairly trumpy in this debate and say a lot of things that are not true and try to capture attention. One thing that strikes me about vance, he is always about reflecting trump. You know, he will
