Vice president harris was in the Border City of douglas, arizona, which is part of what customs and Border Protection calls the Tucson Sector. The Tucson Sector covers 262 border miles and is one of the busiest sectors in the country in terms of undocumented alien Apprehension And Marijuana seizures. The head of the Vice President s visit, Donald Trump double down on his racist rhetoric against immigrants, again using words like Invasion And Migrant crime. Instead of trafficking and racist tropes and lies about migrants, Vice President harris said this. The united states is a sovereign nation and i believe we have a duty to set rules at our border and to enforce them and i take that responsibility very seriously. We are also a nation of immigrants. The united states has been enriched by generations of people who have come from every corner of the world to contribute to our country and to become part of The American story. And so we must reform our Immigration System to ensure that it works in an orderly way. That it is humane. And that it makes our country stronger. Since becoming the democratic nominee for president , Donald Trump and republicans have attacked Vice President harris over the biden harris administrations migrant policies. Vice president harris had this message for voters. I reject the false choice that suggests we must choose between securing our border or creating a system of immigration that is safe, orderly and humane. We can and we must do both. We must do both. In the four years Donald Trump was president , he did nothing to fix our broken Immigration System. He separated families. He ripped toddlers out of their mothers arms. Put children in cages and tried to end protections for dreamers. He made the challenges at the border worse and he is still, and he is still fanning the flames of fear and division. And let me be clear, that is not the work of a leader. That is not the work of a leader and that is, in fact, i think we all believe, and abdication of leadership. And so on behalf of all across our nation who want to see these problems solved, i say we cannot accept Donald Trumps failure to lead. We should not permit scapegoating. Instead of solutions. And lets see what is happening. Lets not permit scapegoating instead of solutions or rhetoric instead of results. Vice president harris said this about the bipartisan Border Security Bill that Donald Trump killed. And The American people deserve a president who cares more about Border Security than playing political games and their personal political future. Donald trump of course is attempting to rewrite history about the Border Bill and today he said this. She said about the Border Bill that trump stopped it. Number one i did not stop it. Talk to me about the strategy we have been reading about the you are engaging in in terms of taking this particular Issue Head on. Donald trump has portrayed this as a democratic failure, a biden failure, a harris failure. You are approaching the discussion about Border Security differently. I have long called Attention And Response to the crisis, but also focus on our Border Communities and the need to act at the executive level, but also at the congressional level. It is personal for me. My grandfather was a Customs Officer responsible for the gateway bridge. Everybody in texas and brownsville knows which bridge that is. That is where my mom and my aunt were born and raised and i spent a lot of my childhood. I know that our Border Communities are real places and they bear the brunt of inaction. So i am glad to see more Executive Action being proposed, but this has to be done congressionally as well and that is where the bipartisan Border Bill in the senate that Ted Cruz helped takedown becomes an important point of discussion. There was 20 Billion for Border Security in that bill. For more judges, more personnel, but also more Border Patrol agents and technology to catch fentanyl coming across the border and that is what we need to do. The issue is that that was a bill a lot of republicans didnt like, democrats did not like but that is the nature of this difficult work in congress. Donald trump runs away from the fact that he was responsible for killing that bill, because there are a lot of republicans who would rather Run On the problem of border issues than solutions to border issues. Thats right. Listen, i was in South Texas visiting with some friends and i will tell you, it is kind of a joke that Ted Cruz comes down to South Texas and puts on his outdoor clothes and, you know, tries to look tough and then goes back to washington and does nothing at all to. It is becoming, you know, you know, just a joke. Dont come down and say you are going to do these things and then stop us from actually doing those things in your job as a senator. We have also point out problems. We have Border Patrol agents working as hard as they can. One of the concerns i have is that we are increasingly seeing Mental Health issues within the Border Patrol because they are asked to work overtime and sometimes away from home and they are experiencing the stress that comes along with that as a workforce. That is why this bill that would have hired more Border Agents is so important. It is not enough to talk about an issue. People expect you to solve it and when you are from these communities like my family is, the inaction becomes something that is unacceptable. To what do you attribute the fact that this inaction has been for so long . This continues to be a big issue for americans regardless of where you stand on it. Most people seem to agree we are a country, we have a border and we should be able to maintain what goes on at that border. Who comes in, what comes in, who stays out, what stays out. We have not had the political courage or political leadership in place to do it in the congress. Lets go back to 2013, when Barack Obama and the gang of eight was coming together and put together a comprehensive reform for the Immigration System with billions of dollars in that bill as well for Border Security. You know, Ted Cruz was in the senate at that time and he helped takedown that bill back then, just like he helped takedown this bill earlier this year. You mentioned that republicans and democrats have issues with the bill in the senate. Not really, actually. This was just the Enforcement Side of Border Security, but none of the reforms to our system that we know we also have to do. Honestly to fix this we have to get folks in who want to solve it, as you said, instead of just having the problem to Run On. I do think in the back of their minds and i know this is true for Ted Cruz. He thinks if we pass this bill, what would i have talked about in the election, because that is my main issue that i am trying to Run On. That has to be so outrageous to every texan that you put yourself and reelection over what is best for our state. People used to get things done and then Run On the idea that they were involved in the solution. Exactly, you could say look what i did. The world is an upside on place. At this point we seem to know what solutions look like and we have obstructive forces in the republican party, Donald Trump included. I really dont think that is that complicated. They put together this bill. This is a hard thing to do to get people to agree on this and they did the Hard Work. There is no question that Donald Trump killed this bill so it would help him. Think about it from a moral viewpoint. How many people have suffered because this bill was not passed . How much fentanyl got into the country that would not if this had passed . It is truly a larger indication of how the republican party has really collapsed as a governing party. It is interesting, jennifer, because the republican party has emphasized border strength, but in fact we have seen historically the republicans being very understanding of the economic imperatives of immigration. The economic dangers of sounding like an antiimmigrant country. That all seems to be out the window. The Border Security issue has become one that republicans have latched onto and yet will not solve. That is absolutely right. It used to be that legal immigration, reforming the legal Immigration System, increasing the visas that go to highly skilled workers was a bipartisan issue, but republicans have become reflexively antiimmigrant. It doesnt matter if they were legally here like haitians in springfield. It does not matter, they are against them because this is essentially coming down to a racial issue. By the way, they dont talk about immigration from asia where people overstayed visas. They are talking about black and brown people from central and southern america. That is what this comes down to. I have to say i was really struck by Kamala Harris. She is leaning into her role as a prosecutor and treating it like it is, which is a legal enforcement issue. She sounds much tougher than biden never did and much tougher than a lot of democrats have and i think this is recognition by the democrats that they can be supportive of dreamers. They can be supportive of our system, but they also to be concerned about the border. This is a good turn for the democrats. It is for the center. Likely to appeal to people in the middle and i give her some kudos because i am sure people in her party are not comfortable with this. Politically it is wise in the long run, to distinguish between Border Security, the process of getting potential migrants through the system, legal immigration which we need much more of because of our economic growth. If we can get past obstructionists like Donald Trump and others in the republican party on this issue, this can, as jennifer says, once again become a bipartisan issue that we can actually solve. What does that look like to you and do you think there is will in the republican party of guys like Donald Trump are not standing in the way of Immigration Reform to get this done in a bipartisan fashion . I think as far as what it looks like, lets look at ronald reagan. Ronald reagan announced for president at the Statue Of Liberty to send a message about immigration. He signed a bill to let everyone in the country before 1984 be legal. That is what it looks like. Now the problem is that this is not a trump issue. It is what the republican party has become. I mean the antitrump element of the republican party is just tiny and when trump loses, which i think he is, they are not going to rush to solve this. Theyre going to continue to try to use it as a hot Button Issue in campaigns and that is a real tragedy. The republican position on immigration was never this. As recently as the 2015 2016 republican primary, you had candidates including Jeb Bush and others who were discussing immigration in a much more traditional sense. Despite that this had been a bipartisan failure to reform immigration, there were normal conversations going on about immigration within the republican party. As recently as that. That seems to be gone. It really doesnt remember in 2013 when they passed that bill, it actually passed overwhelmingly in the senate. But good all Paul Ryan who everyone thinks is a pro business, moderate guy, did not have the nerve to put it on the floor. Basically the democrats In The House Chickened Out. The republicans Chickened Out and the bill went nowhere and Ted Cruz did nothing. By the way, marco rubio, the senator from florida who continually complains about immigration, just dropped it. He ran from it like a hot potato. So this is one suggestion i would have for Kamala Harris and that is if republicans again try to filibuster it, she should try to reform the filibuster on this issue. Not on some kind of very progressive issue that is controversial. Let them do this and say to The American people, the senate is stopping Border Security. Im going to get this done and carve out an exception to the filibuster, because that is where the problem is. They can get a majority In The House. They can get a bipartisan group in the senate, but if you have to get 60 votes its not going to fly, not in this republican party. It is an overwhelmingly bipartisan issue.
