To a sound of a knock on her door last week, she assumed it was perhaps a neighbor who needed milk or eggs. But, to her surprise, it wasnt a neighbor. Rather, nine officers. Most of the men, came to her front door. Some of them had Riot Shields or guns in their holsters. The officers presented a Search Warrant and question her for three hours. At one point they even had the greatgrandmother stand outside in her nightgown. According to their warrants, officers were looking for records including applications for ballot by mail, a list of voter banks, and documents about elected officials and candidates. Martinez said the officers told her they were there because she had filled out a report saying that older residents were not getting mail ballots. That is quite an aggressive response to that report, but she confirms she actually did file it. Martinez is a retired educator in San Antonio who has spent 35 years as a Member And Volunteer with the oldest civil Rights Group in america. Part of her work with that organization includes helping older residents and veterans register to vote. That is apparently what made her suspicious to republican Texas Attorney general ken paxton. On monday, martinez and other leaders held a News Conference outside of Paxtons Office in San Antonio. They took my laptop, my appointment book, i dont know when i have an appointment with my doctors. They took my cell phone. They took all the information that i had. I have two sons and two daughters and they dont want me involved in this anymore. They are scared that im going to be in prison. And i said they cant, i am not doing anything illegal. Martinez was just one target of raids on several latino democrats and members in south texas. They are all part of a two Year Investigation into alleged election fraud, and Vote Harvesting collected by Paxton Election Integrity unit. That was the same unit that was created in the wake of Donald Trumps fake election claims during the 2020 president ial election. Of course, no charges have been filed against those who have had their homes searched this month. So, what does this new stunt by paxton actually achieved, besides Fueling Fear . His raids left targets shaken up and scared, and outside the latino community they push a false narrative about a noncitizen supposedly voting illegally. The Texas Attorney general has been eager to advance these baseless claims about Voter Fraud throughout his career. On a Radio Show earlier this month he said, quote, there is a reason Joe Biden brought people here illegally. I am convinced that is how they are going to do it this time, they are going to use the illegal vote. Two be clear here, absolutely clear, u. S. Law already bans noncitizens from voting in federal elections. And as Election Officials and experts have repeatedly said to us, there is no evidence of widespread Voter Fraud in texas or this country at large. You know it is true, though . Texas has a long history of discrimination against its citizens of mexican descent. It is actually why the historic latino civil Rights Organization came together in the first place back in 1929. You can imagine these raids felt deeply personal to leaders and members. The groups national president called them, quote, pointblank voter intimidation. Now it has turned the tables on paxton by calling on the Justice Department to investigate the investigator. You know, The One really searching for Voter Fraud and for potentially violating the voting Rights Act of 1965. Joining me now to discuss this more is the ceo. It is good to have you on the show, thank you so much for making time for us. Just walk me through what has happened since that incident with ms. Martinez, has there been any more insight into what they were trying to achieve, what they plan on doing, and have her possessions been returned to her . Her possessions have not been returned to her. We have a lot more information relative to the other warrants that were served to victims, to our best knowledge there were about 12 of them. We have spoken with five for those members. We have sent the letters to the Department Of Justice asking for an inquiry and we will be meeting with them as early as next week to provide them with all the information that we have relative to this case. What you want the Department Of Justice to do and is angry . I assume they have not responded to you, perhaps they will respond to you in person when you meet with them. What is it that you are seeking from the Department Of Justice . We want an investigation. On the civil justice side, but also the criminal side, as well. We believe that ms. Martinez civil rights have been violated, so we wanted to investigate that. Can paxton seems to have launched kind of an attack now on organizations in texas. And, you know, if you are an outside observer you can kind of say with some degree of confidence, this has the hallmarks of voter intimidation. When you are targeting groups and trying to undercut their ability to vote freely and fairly and feel confident in their vote, you are doing a great disservice to our democracy. How do you fight that, how do you come to that . How do you get these organizations to mobilize in these tactics . First and foremost, there is a pattern here. Weve been talking about the rates for the last week, but if you go back to june you see rio grande valley. In july he also filed suit against annunciation house, which provides Respite Services for immigrants in the united states. At all those nonprofit organizations and all those latino leaders, civic leaders, members all latino. There is no question he is targeting the latino community. One of the things we are doing in our response is that our response will not be only a latino response. We are working with the naacp, we met yesterday with eric johnson, with the urban league, with meyer from the leadership conference. So, our response will be one of the civil rights community, fully intersectional, hispanics, africanamericans, and the asian committee, as well. Let me share with you something that the governor has been doing, greg abbott. He purged 1 Million people from the state Voter Role, saying that illegal voting in texas will not be tolerated. But the majority of voters, data shows, that were removed from the roles either passed away or failed to respond to notices from Election Officials, or just moved out of texas. Do you believe there is a concerted effort to fearmonger right now at of the election and create this sense of intimidation . You know, i think he actually put that out last friday as, number one, a way to deflect from the story, this negative story, that affects his administration and paxton. But in addition to that, it also really undercuts their argument of systemic Voter Fraud and Vote Harvesting. 6500 of those persons actually removed from the Voter Role were defined as noncitizens. 6500 of 1. 1 Million is less than half a percent. 1900 of those 6500 actually had voting history. So you are talking about less than 1 1000 of a percent of the people that were on those Voter Rolls are a noncitizen immigrant , if you will. That is not systemic Voter Fraud. That is not systemic voter harvesting. It undercut their entire argument. What im concerned about is that he gave those 1900 records, literally handed them over to paxton, and our expectation is he is going to go after them. He is looking for an embodiment, and he is going to arrest someone on those 1900. Let me ask you really quick, we are almost out of time. Why do you think they are so afraid of latinos in texas . Why you think there is such a concerted effort to go after this kind of invisible bogeyman . Well, not invisible. Theres 12. 1 Million latinos in texas. Latinos are 40 of the population. It is actually greater than the 12 Million nonhispanic that lived in the states. When you take into account hispanics, african americans, and asians, that is 60 of the populations. Texas is and has been a Majority Minority State for some time. This is their way to stay in power. Not just to keep in control of the state, but there are districts, and 5050 districts that are changing dramatically because of these demographics. So, what so, what you do when you are the president ial candidate responsible for stripping away the Reproductive Rights of millions of women . So, i have told them that i want more weeks. You will vote in favor of the amendment . I am going to be voting that we need more than six weeks. So, trump left an opening to vote to overturn the florida Sixweek Abortion been. We know what Donald Trump will do, and we know it is because of the three Supreme Court justices he installed. And he said he was going to put in antichoice justices. He has but an antichoice justices and they overturn Roe V wade, which has been the law of the land. Your constitutional right, it was a protected right. That you could have an abortion, it was federal. And these three justices, along with the other conservative justices overturned it, and we saw the Oral Arguments, the Supreme Court Oral Arguments this session, that alito and thomas talked about using an 18thcentury Law that has not been used in forever, to make Mailing Abortion pills illegal. And when he wants to try to win an election and try to run to the center and be a little bit more moderate, he will say no, i wont support a national Abortion Ban. Yeah, thats right. I mean, running for president , a campaign, you can promise to do a lot of stuff and No One really knows we are capable of until you are right up in there. And the unfortunate thing for america, the unfortunate thing for knowing where you stand is that we have seen what it is like when he Screws America for four years, and the world. And people dont like that, right . He knows that the position that his party has is unpopular, and he promises that he is saying what he is going to do, im going to allow abortion for six months, eight months, and then when he is in power, you see him stripping away reproductive freedoms. There was another portion of the nbc interview, i want to play that for you, again trying to portray himself as a moderate, announcing a new policy on ivf treatments. Watch this. We are going to be, under the trump administration, we are going to be paying for that treatment. So we are paying for that treatment. For all americans who want to . For all americans to get it. All americans that need it. We are going to be paying for that treatment or we are going to be mandating that the Insurance Companies do. So either the government will pay for it or the Insurance Companies. Under a mandate, yes. Just be clear, when the government pays for medical treatment for citizens, that is called socialized healthcare. I dont know if he knows that, but that is actually the definition of socialized healthcare. So it seems now trump is opening the door to socialized healthcare in the republican party and his administration. And for a really expensive procedure. Ivf is Tens Of Thousands of dollars, and you have rounds and rounds and rounds. And sometimes you never get pregnant from it. And i have to say, this was the guy who tried to overturn obamacare. I mean, this is not a guy who is for socialized medicine. I think what is important is we have hit the moment in the Election Cycle where Donald Trump will say literally anything to get elected. We are at that point where he will say whatever. So is he going to pay for everyone in the world to get ivf . No. Is anyone buying this . Do republicans care about it . Look, ivf is wildly popular. So is, by the way, abortion is much more popular than it ever was. Reproductive rights. I think there are some people who want to believe, right . The trump people want to believe. But do they really believe . I mean, he worked here for four years. We have seen his words mean nothing. After this, Elizabeth Warren came out and really went straight after Donald Trump for making that comment. Watch this. American women are not stupid.
