The Maryland Vaccine Hunters Facebook group is helping mostly older adults navigate their way to vaccine sites all over the state, and it really is the true definition of a community effort."I expected the site to be popular, but I didn’t expect for it explode this much," said Elliot Hazzard, a co-creator of the group. "I think it's an indication of how stressful and time-consuming the appointment-securing process in Maryland is." Maryland online vaccination site locatorVaccine Data DashboardMaryland vaccination plan FAQsHazzard said he got the idea after seeing a report on a similar site in New Orleans, and soon after, the Maryland group was born.Some of the success stories include Kate Cavanaugh, who acts as a volunteer to help friends and family make an appointment."This morning, I was able to find appointments for my uncle, for a friend and for parents of a friend as well," Cavanaugh said.Or Charlene Mowery, who, through the help of a perfect stranger, was able to book appointments for herself and her husband."Somebody came on there and said, 'I'm willing to do it (private message) me your telephone number and your information and I'll see if I can get you on,' and it's just people helping people, which is just fantastic," Mowery said. "I could not believe all the information that they had -- telephone numbers, suggestions."The group helps determine eligibility for the vaccine, when and where people can get one, as well as the incredibly popular tips and tricks."We have a spreadsheet in the announcement section that has various appointment portals listed and some of the tips and tricks that people can use to secure appointments through those portals," Hazzard said.Others, like Lillian Deeble, who just started using the page, are finding all of the information to be very helpful."I feel more optimistic now that I see that there are little tricks to try to get in, but doesn’t it seem crazy that we have to know the tricks to try to get in to try to get such an important thing?" Deeble said.The group also pairs tech-savvy people with older adults in a community coming together."It has been tremendously gratifying to know that I've helped so many of my fellow Marylanders, and I just hope that I can help many, many more," Hazzard said.The group has more than 30,000 followers and continues to grow.
