Now we are getting an inside look at his secretive regime. The Washington Post gained exclusive access to sources closest to the north Korean Leader. Her new book is the great successor happy to welcome anna fairfield. Kim jonguns very existence was kept secret until right before he took power. What were you what were we able to learn about his life as an adult or a child . North koreans had no idea until he was announced to the public. I went out to try to find everyone who ever met him. I found a japanese souci ship. I found his and thousand uncle who lived in pyongyang with him and actually posed as parents and acted as guardians when he was a teenager and at a school and switzerland. So they were able to paint a portrait for me of what kind of childhood he had. Were they speaking freely or undercover . And north korea, nobody ever speaks freely. It is difficult to get people to open up. People have some other motive or interest. And asking them about the nitty gritty details of daily life, i was able to find out some details about kim jongun and how he was raised. He had this life of complete decadence. Everyone else was starving. He had food flowing in from france and overseas. He had the toys he could ever want. He had so much luxury. And he was so isolated. He did not even know his other siblings and his family. How do you think that affected him as an adult and a leader . He grew up thinking he had this kind of divine right to lead north korea. His aunt told me it was impossible for him to ever have anything like a normal childhood. When he was eight years old, he was given a general uniform. And real generals came to his eighth Birthday Party and bowed to him and saluted to him. He had this sense of entitlement and he got used to giving orders at a very young age. We reported on brutalities at the hand of kim jongil into his own people and family members. How has the typical experience for North Koreans chained under his rules. There are two main experiences. And kim jongun has tried to enrich the elite. The people who keep him and power to feel like their lives are getting better. In the capital of pyongyang, people have so many highrise buildings and cafis and leisure activities that did not exist before. He wants the people at the top to keep him and power so he wants things to be happy. But with the general population, he does not care at all about them and their lives have not changed much at all under him because they are not powerful in the system. They are so busy trying to feed their families. Its like he feels they dont matter. Lets talk about how the north Korean Leader relates to what is happening at home. We have seen on twitter and elsewhere President Trump and kim jongun sparring. Little rocket man. Kim calling our president mentally deranged. The sort of verbal sparring does this go in line with kim jonguns style . Yes. It was part of the nuclear program. When kim jongun was trying to show how strong he was. He was trying to prevent himself from having a credible Nuclear Threat and the will to use it. That was like him 1. 0. 2017 when he was wanting to get Donald Trumps attention and get him to take him seriously. And it worked. Now he is trying to present himself as a rational, reasonable and responsible leader and that is what he is doing now that he is holding talks with the outside world. What do you expect to come from the meeting between kim jongun and the chinese president and how might that affect President Trump a . I think the chinese president has tried to ignore kim jongun. Now he has been quite alarmed to see this diplomatic process happening without him. So he is trying to insert himself back into this process to make sure kim jongun answers to him and not to donald trump. China likes to have influence over the backyard. So i think xi jinping gives kim jongun quite a talking to but he wants to encourage him and does not want Nuclear Tests at his back doorstep. Author of the book the great successor. Thank you for joining us this morning. Thank you for having me. Coming up, President Trump has launched his 2020 campaign. We have reaction to the president s big rally. Find out why one of the nations biggest Cereal Company kelloggs is cutting jobs across the united states. One call 811 before you dig. Nice and cool and great in the area of San Francisco international airport. There are traffic troubles to tell you about on 101 along the peninsula. Before we discussed the weather on what is a busy morning. Happy wednesday everyone. Dave clark is enjoying the week off. Lets talk about the changes we are feeling. A little cooler. Inland was hot yesterday. Frank, how are you . Great. We have a lot of fog. Bigger fog bank today than yesterday. Our good friend chloe, our source in lake county. 72 degrees already. Not even 8 00 a. M. Expecting a high today of around 9597. In the same temperature ballpark. Yesterday, ukiah, 103. Brentwood, 100. The beach, a cool 61 with low fog along the shore. Still beautiful. The beach equals stinson beach. 50s and 60s on the temperatures. 24 degrees cooler. A bigger fog bank. It wont burn off as soon as it did yesterday. A system diving into the Pacific Northwest ushering in a cooler pattern. A southeast breeze in the Santa Clara Valley. This is the system that will dive in toward nevada. Tomorrow will be a cooler day as well. 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s. 7 31 a. M. There are a couple of new things. We are going to start with just the east bay commute, steve. A lot of people want to know how long it is taking. This is the general meter. 32 minutes from the bridge to the macarthur maze. Pretty typical for this time of the year. Not quite 4550 minutes like it would be in february or march but it is pretty robust. When you get to the bay bridge, you will be backed up for a little bit at the toll plaza. The traffic will be busy coming up. This is about a 1520 minute delay. And 880 north and south in oakland looks pretty good. The san mateo bridge is slow getting on. Things have improved on the peninsula. Talking about a crash at 101. That is gone by the traffic is still slow on northbound 101. It is improving. South on 680 at fremont at the mission boulevard south exit, there is an exit closure there because of a crash off the freeway that fremont polices handling. You may experience congestion in that area. 7 32 a. M. Lets go back to the desk.
