More tensions between the president and the fbi. Donald trump is set to approve the release of h republican memo that accuses the agency of bias against him. Beijing continues its crackdown on ethnic minorities in northwest china. We have a special report and going for gold. Meet the Nigerian Women wh bobsled team will make history at the Winter Olympics later this month. Rajini welcome to our viewers on public telision in america d around the globe. A controversial memo written by republican members of the House Intelligence Committee based on classified materials could be made public as early tomorrow. The document accuses the fbi and Justice Department of antitrump bias and will be released despite rong objections from the democrats and what the fbi said were its grave concerns. As he left the state of the union, the president w asked to release a memo. President trump dont worry. 100 . [laughter] rajini a memo that has been the talk of washingtons political circles for weeks. What is in it, and why does it matter . Well, it is related to the Ongoing Investigation of the Trump Campaigns ties with russia. The fourpage classified acument written by republicans is said to allegitrump bias in the fbi, specifically in the way that one of Donald Trumps former cn advisers, carter page, was aced under surveillance. They argue that the permission to wiretap him was based on unsubstantiated intelligence, which was partially funded by the democrats. They are crying foul pliy and party tics. So, too, are democrats, who say donald trump and his supporters are trying to discredit the work of the intelligence agencies. And there i concern from that community, too. There is a sag on morale. They are troubled by what they are hearing reported. Ey know that some of what is being b reported, whang alleged, is flatout untrue. Sejini by agreeing to rel this memo, the president has drawn the battle lines between his administration and the countrys intelligence agencies. For more on the republican memo and what impact it might have, i spoke to our potical analyst ron christie. The director of the fbi is saying he has grave concerns about thmemos accuracy. What could the implications be of the release . Ron the impcations could be very significant in the fact that the fbi a Justice Department are accused of improperly using t United StatesIntelligence Services to eavesdrop on innocent americans. The question from me on these fourh pages, whicbelieve we will see tomorrow, is what does it indicate how the fbi went toc rd to get a warrant ine thited states you need to get a search warrant to surveil people so did the fbi rely on the improper dossier paid for by the democrats to surveil the Trump Campaign . Rajini democrats say that the information in the memo has been cherry picked and the full aspicture will not be rele. Ron i dont believe that. From my time in the white house , having access to classified information, this is a very significant matter. Every mber of the Intelligence Committee read that document. There were 200 members of congress who read the document. Yet only a handful of democrats took the time to actually go a read it. For those who are saying they believe this could be a division or a significant or serious or reckless release, i would ask them in the first adace whether or not they the document to begin with. Rajini both sides are saying Party Politics is coming into this, though. N they are, and this is an area i would say from my experience working on capitol hill for nine years as well as being in the whiteasouse, using fied material for political matters is no laughing matter. I do believe the househe republicans, olks on the Intelligence Committee, they are not all lets go get the democrats, lets trash the fbi. These are serious men and women who are on this committee, and i tbelieve them when they sy looked at the classified doments provided by the fb and are releasing a summary. I believe ey are not using for a politicized weapon. Rajini this comes in the wider context of the ongoing russia investigation, which is being led by the fbi. We have seen ever since President Trump took office a different relationship between his administration and t Intelligence Community. From your experience working inside the white house, how typical is it for an administration to have tensionst wi Intelligence Community . Ron i think it is rather significant. In my four years in the bush administration, we got along very well with the fbi and Justice Department. There needs to be a certain amount of independence with the hai, and donald trump, while i agree in this casethe fbi and Justice Department may have surveilled him improperly, i think it is damaging tica to not have a strong relationship with the fbi, department of justice, and intelligence gatheringntities. Rajini ron christie, thanks for coming in. Ron good to see you. Rajini well, another controversy in washington today was over the crowd size of tuesday nights state of the Union Address. President rump took to twitter for the First Time Since the spch to say that tv viewership was the highest in history. Nielsen, which tracks the trends, disputes the claims. Someone who has had to defend similar claims by thpresident was former press secretary sean spicer, and a short time ago he spoke to my colleagues katty kay and Christian Fraser for their Program Beyond 100 days. Katty you served this president who has this needed to say everything is the biggest. Ha why does he do does he believe he has bigger ratings for the state of the Union Address than any president has had before . Sean two things. One, i am out of the audience and crowd size business. Number two, i think with respect to your question, the president is a marketer. This is what he has been doing his whole life selling buildings, talking about shows and how well the ratings are doing. He has his own way oelpresenting hi i would refer you back to the White House Press office w respect to this particular one. atty the problem with this from the president s point of view is that he has good news to sell. Actually, the ratings for the state of the Union Address were high. He has legitimate things to sayh abouu. S. Economy. Why step on his own message when he tweets something out like this that is demonstrably not true . Around the world people say we there goes the president of the United States again, we cannot trust donald trump, these are not the facts. That is a problem. Se well, if we want to ta about hyperbole, what you just said is not true, either, to say this around the world. Look, the bottom line is he has his own style commit has been usfective for him iness and real estate, he got elected. I will agree with the fact that i thought he did a phenomenal job laying out a vision for the country and talking about where we have been the past year in terms of Economic News and statistics, the fight against isis, immigration, foreign policy, the threat that northfa kores or the challenge that north korea is to us and to the rest of the world. Er i would raim continue to talk about what he said in the state of the union and ride thi. Wave for a whi i think it was a wellreceived speech wn you look at the polling. Independents in the country found a lot of what he appealing and agreed with him. I ink they should be focus on continuing to ride the wave of a wellgiven speech that was followed on the heels of a really good speech in davos. Tithe more he is not distr from his own messaging is really helpful, and i would agree that the less he can do to not get off of that script, the christian take me behind the podium, because i am intrigued. You yourself on the record the past few weeks said some the were times i screwed up. Sean yeah. Ch stian what happened on those days . Twhen you go behi screen, does the president love you . Does he chew you up . Does he ignore you . How does he react on those particular days when you get it wrong . Sean that is part of the reason im writing a book, to walk through a lot of this. I would say it is a mixed bim. There were it was really painful when i did something i knew i steppedn, and those difficult moments, the president was probably the most gracious and said, i know what you are trying to say, sean, and those guys in the media were looking to get you, ani know you did not mean it to come out that way. That helped a ton. There were other times when he would say, why did you say that word . That wasnt what we talked about. So there were moments of disappointment, and i would feel hbad that not checked in with him or articulated something in a way that was not how he wanted it expressed. In buost cases, the president was extremely gracious and, frankly, forgiving. Katty sean, when you watch the white house now, and we are in a period where there has been an uptick in the president s approval numbers and the state of the economy, as you were saying earlier, do you watch the briefings and think, god, i wish i was back at the podium, or do you think, whew, thank god its not te . Sean defi the latter. [laughter] sean look, i enjoyed it, and i know pple find it hard to believe. That being said, i enjoy being a viewer as opposed to a briefer much more these days. I still want to be a supporter of the president s policies and agen and do what i can. But the stress level has gone down. The president looked at me not too long ago and said, my god you look 10 years younger. Katty i have covered for en 4 american pres and countless press secretaries have come and gone in years ive beei in d. C. , ve never known one that comedians loved to taunt as much as you, and god bless you for taking in such good spirit. Sean the irishthat is it. Katty what is it about sean spic that everybody loved to make fun of . Sean look, part of it was donald trump. We have never seen a president like donald trump. I think playing the role that i did in this administration at the beginning of it, you kind of get a little bit of the bleed over. Li one has seen a presiden this before, and therefore they had not in a press secretary not seen a press secretary like this before. t fully expecting it part of why i waited a while and thought about this and longtime is i figured at some point i had to write a book and because to your point, katty, i grew up in ts country, and there were things like saturday night live that are iconic. There are skits i remember from eddie murphy and dan aykroyd that i can recite w heart. And think that my kids are like, now you are one of them. [laughter] sean exactly. It is a very weird evolution for somebody to go through that in such a short period of time. Christian well, you are a very good sport. Katty you were a very good sport, thanks for joining usn the program. Sean you bet, and i look forward to getting over there. Christian come and see us. Sean i will. Rajini lets take a look at the days other news. The u. S. State Department Says it is deeply troubled by reportc of mass gravtaining the bodies of hundreds of Rohingya Muslims in myanmar. Close to what we believe is one of them, we are stopped from filming. China is building a total surveillance state, where saying, doing, or even tonnking the wrg thing can get you ntlocked up in an internme camp. As y can see, it is a place where foreign journalists are certainly not welcome. Wherever we go in xinjiang, we are constantly hassled, ndtained, monitored, followed. I cant bear it anymore. I would rather they were executed than abused to death by the chinese government. John he says has no idea what happened to his children. Today the British Government raised its concerns abt the treatment of muslims here, including restrictions on religious practice. Such a frank statement in theer maf a Prime Ministerial visit will not go down well. China is seeking the u. K. s backing for a plan to use xinjiangs desert highways as ar new economic cridor to central asia and beyond. It insis the threat of islamic terrorism come with er of attacks in recent years, is a real one. Is it difficult to answer questions . But a police state breeds fear. The big match this year will see boston and philadelphia going headt known for their history as much as their obsessive sports fans. Reporter this years super bowl pits the city of brotherly love against beantown, franklinms versus arocky against paul revere. This guy against, well, that guy. Philadelphia and boston are known for their rabid fans, sometimes a bit too much so. Eagles, eagles im ready for the super bowl reporter in philadelphia, a team of selfdescribed crisco poles. Eased up they dont want drunk fans clamming up and causing trouble. Then they punched police forces. On different weekends, 2 fans, 2 poce forces. For patriots fans, it is the success that rubs the wrong way, the sense of entitlement. Last super bowls 17 will do that to you. Philadelphia wears the face ofe derdog, literally. The mask has sold out at amazon. Dont get either side started on food. Ask the philly fan, it is allee about steaks. In boston, clam chowder is a cup oheaven. All this rivalry on and off the field is a shame, really, because the cities have a lot in pommon.
