Look at him i like seeing brittany and the kids all cheering him on. A special night for drew brees and hoda kotb but we are going to start with that massive storm creating misery all over the country. That system, it stretches nearly 2,000 miles, spawning destructive tornadoes in the south, dangerous snow and ice farther north. We do have complete coverage, including als forecast, but we are going to start with nbcs Morgan Chesky in hardhit louisiana, hey, morgan, good morning. Reporter yeah, hoda, good morning. This is where that trail of devastation starts here in alexandria its also the site of an incredible story of survival im standing in front of whats left of a school that housed about a dozen students and teachers yesterday, but knew this wouldnt protect them when the storm moved in the teachers gathered up the students, led them across this parking lot into a nearby church where everyone huddled under chairs and prayed to survive this morning, a serious storm packing a deadly punch, the powerful system unleashing terrifying twisters down south and dumping snow and ice from the midwest up to the northeast. Down south, multiple tornadoes ripped across the region the School Building at Hope Baptist Church in alexandria, louisiana, demolished. Incredibly there were no serious injuries as students and faculty rushed to take cover in the Church Next Door before the tornado sliced its way through town, leaving a field of debris in its path. Destruction, it causes, it just turns your life upside down reporter the National Weather service estimating the twisters path covered more than 60 miles at least one person was killed in mississippi, tornadoes tearing through trees, mangling power lines and damaging homes, keeping emergency crews busy all day long millions in the midwest are grappling with their own nasty weather. I lived in ohio my entire life and i cant seem to get used to it. Reporter heavy snow and ice creating dire conditions for drivers. Ice quickly turns the road to a dangerous situation. Reporter at least nine people have been killed in weatherrelated crashes. Including a mother and son in indiana who died after their car spun into the path of a pickup truck. The frigid effects also being felt in missouri where a heavy blast of snow created a travel nightmare, just days before the official arrival of winter and this morning i just had a chance to speak with the local police chief he says that there are still areas where power has been knocked out and crews are going to be clearing off debris so officers can still check some of the hardesthit areas. In the meantime, in the midst of all of this devastation, everyone is thankful because they know how much worse this could have been, especially with the sight of that tornado. Craig, hoda. Indeed, all right, morgan, thank you and that storm system kind of headed this way. The second part of this system has spread snow, its spread ice well into new england, and thats creating another dangerous morning commute for millions of folks. Nbcs kathy park has made her way to worcester, massachusetts. Kathy, good morning to you reporter craig, good morning to you thats right, the snow is starting to fall where we are, and its heavy at times, and its only expected to pick up later on today and with temperatures hovering in the 20s right now, the snow is starting to stick on the roadways as you mentioned, this is making for a messy morning compute. Crews have been working overnight to treat the roadway, so things have been looking pretty good so far but throughout the northeast, they are dealing with snow, rain, sleet, freezing rain, and freezing rain could pose a lot of problems because even a tenth of an inch of ice on tree limbs could pull the tree limbs down Power Outages are not out of the question travel delays are expected throughout the day because the storm is expected to linger throughout much of the afternoon. Meantime, back here in worcester, this is the third storm event this month i want to point something out to you. This is the snow mound thats been collecting. Its actually gone down significantly, but yeah, theyre still digging out from the past two storms, and today theyre anticipating 3 to 5 inches more to add to this pile. Craig, back to you kathy park in worcester for us. Kathy, thank you al is busy tracking that Severe Weather al, whats next. We have two sides to the system, you can see the heavy storms stretching from new new orleans to virginia, and to the north weve got that icy mix, that purple and pink and then to the north were looking at snow. Right now weve got flood alerts for six states, 15 Winter Weather alerts, 15 Million People under Winter Weather alerts, 6 million in the flood watches. As we watch this system make its way to the east, its a doublebarrelled low, a wintry mix and a travel mess and nate mayor in the northeast for the airports and the rose as this pushes away. Snowfall amounts, the heavier amounts will be in interior sections of new england where well see anywhere from 4 to 6 inches of snow, but icy conditions as far as rainfall, 1 to 2 inches in central and southern florida. As you might imagine, airports are going to be a mess stretching from atlanta up to boston for a mix of rain, wind, snow and ice craig. Mr. Roker, thank you. New fireworks this morning over impeachment are expected on capitol hill in just a few hours. The House Rules Committee will meet to lay out the guidelines for debate that will happen before tomorrows historic vote some democrats who plan to vote for impeachment are starting to feel the heat from voters back home nbcs White House Correspondent Peter Alexander has the latest peter, good morning. Reporter hey, craig, good morning to you one by one, more than a handful of House Democrats from conservative leaning districts, a critical block of lawmakers who have expressed reservations about impeachment say they are putting principle before politics announcing they will back impeachment, a vote that could make them more vulnerable back home but one that reinforces how democrats are united heading into tomorrows historic vote. 24 hours out from a vote that would make donald trump only the third president to be impeached, a growing list of House Democrats from competitive districts say they will vote in favor of impeachment its because of this that i will be voting yes on both articles of impeachment. Reporter the decisions drawing mixed reviews. I made this decision out of principle and out of a duty to protect and defend the constitution i feel that in my bones. Reporter if the president is impeached it goes to the Republican Controlled Senate for a trial, where Democrat Chuck schumer is amplifying his call for several current and former Trump Administration officials to testify, including acting chief of staff, Mick Mulvaney and former National Security adviser john bolton, both blocked by the white house from participating in the house hearing. Do they want a fair, honest trial that examines all the facts or do they want a trial that doesnt let the facts come out . Reporter for his part, the president is defending his personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani who recently returned from another trip to ukraine, again, trying to dig up dirt on the bidens. Hes a great person who loves our country and he does this out of love, believe me, he does it out of love. Reporter overnight giuliani provided new details about his role in the ousting of marie yovanovitch, the former ambassador from ukraine, telling the New York Times he briefed the president a couple of times. I do not understand mr. Giulianis motives for attacking me. Reporter and while last month giuliani told the new yorker, i believed i needed yovanovitch out of the way she was going to make the investigation difficult for everybody. Guiliani said this last night about his role in the socalled Smear Campaign on fox news i didnt need her out of the way. I forced her out because shes corrupt. So peter, this vote thats going to happen in a few hours, what does it mean Going Forward . Reporter whats going to happen today, craig, the House Democrats on the rules committee, theyre going to lay out what debate on the house floor will look like ahead of tomorrows Party Line Vote and ultimately how long that debate will last. One other critical item to watch today, theyre also expected to green light a spending bill that would fund the government through next fall and as importantly avoid another looming government shutdown. The company says it is now shutting down production of the still grounded 737 max after the faa suggested it could be several more months before that plane is approved to fly again nbcs tom costello covers aviation for us. Tom, has anything like this ever happened its unprecedented, craig, never before has boeing voluntarily shut down a line and its because it simply doesnt know when this plane will fly again. Boeing angered the faa because it continued to publicly pressure the faa into a fast approval process, until finally last week, the faa chief told the boeing ceo to back off staffed up with nowhere to go outside of seattle, 400 brand new 737 maxes. Part of the global max fleet grounded since last march, and the two fatal crashes overseas that killed 346. No plane has ever been grounded for so long. Now boeing says its temporarily shutting down production of the max. No new planes will roll off the line in a statement, the company says we believe this decision is least disruptive to maintaining longterm Production System and supply chain help. This is probably the biggest crisis that boeing has faced in decades, and thats because its most popular plane, the 737 max is now in a position where the companys not sure when it will fly again. Boeing says its not planning any layoffs or furloughs instead, it will shift employees to different work assignments. At the heart of the problem, a Software System called mcas, which boeing itself says played a role in the fatal crashes. The mcas software was added because the stlec737 max has he engines that can pull the nose of the plane, the mcas was to trim the plane the software misfired pushes both planes into a death spiral. The indonesian crew fought for control but didnt know about mcas because boeing hasnt told airlines or pilots the faa has been requesting more information about boeings proposed software and computer fixes, yet the company was pushing the faa to reapprove the plane for flight this month, even though it had not submitted all the paperwork. Last week, the faa chief told boeings ceo to stop pushing. I made it very clear that boeings plan is not the faas plan. Reporter we mentioned boeing is not going to furlough or layoff any employees its hoping that its 600 suppliers will do the same its going to need all the employees systemwide when the plane starts flying again. It has 4,000 planes on back order from the airlines. So tom, what does this mean for the airlines that have been banking on getting those planes in their fleets . Banking literally, right . Theyve got a lot of money riding on this they have been living without the max for nine months already. Just this morning, Southwest Airlines joining american, taking the plane out of its fleet until april at the earliest, and some airlines around the world are really struggling financially because of this problem. They simply dont have a plane to fly. Tom costello at Reagan National thank you. What do you say we move to football what a story, a historic night for the new Orleans Saints quarterback, drew brees, he broke not just one but two records while leading his team to a big win i think hes searching for another mighty mark, will he get it here . Yes touchdown pass 540 in the 504. 540 in the 504. Im not sure how we got here. It just, it kind of makes your whole life and career flash before your eyes because i never thought i would have had the chance to be a part of Something Like this i mean, how incredible, and humble is that guy, a
