Selfdriving taxi Service Waymo will start operating in la and austin, texas. Its the first time the Autonomous Car company is expanding its services outside of San Francisco. The cars have to remain off the freeway as they operate. The company also plans to be going to san mateo, but a county supervisor is asking for that to be put on hold. Abc seven News Reporter ryan curry live in the studio with the details of that request. Yeah, reggie good morning. Supervisor david canepa and the rest of the board have filed an appeal with the cpuc to delay waymo from hitting San Mateo County streets. He says waymos approval was rushed. The cpuc originally suspended this expansion in the beginning of february, because the board of supervisors asked for a review period that was supposed to last 120 days, but less than two weeks after that, the cpuc approved the expansion because waymo updated their passenger safety plan. Now waymo can have their cars operate in the peninsula and los angeles. Waymo has not announced when they will deploy the fleet in San Mateo County. Supervisor canepa is calling for more transparency. What were asking is for them to really consider what we had said in our initial letter, just this communication of working with public works on infrastructure, working with the fire department, working with the sheriffs department. There is a bill by south bay senator david cortez that would allow cities and counties to implement their own regulations around selfdriving cars, waymo said in a statement. We will continue to engage in cpuc process and remain committed to our long tum approach of dialog and partnership with city officials, waymo says there is not a set timetable for when they will start their expansion to the peninsula. This new ordinance would have imposed fines and penalties to deter the dangerous street shows. No City Council Member was willing to second the motion to hold a vote. City Council Member mike babakina says the measure was not tough enough. He says any ordinance should also penalize spectators, too, as well as impose fines to cover damages. The search is on for a new police chief in san jose, and people who live in the city are now weighing in. Abc seven news south bay reporter Laura Martinez is hearing from residents about who they want to see in that position. If theyre under a lot of duress and stress, and how are they going to come to the next call . San jose residents are providing feedback to help the city find a new police chief. The City Managers Office said. Before they start advertising the position online, they are gathering input from the community, so we will use that to build out a desired candidate profile that well be looking for and that ultimately will become a job posting that we go out and recruit for. We acknowledge and honor the original inhabitants of berkeley. The documented 5000 year history of a vibrant community at the West Berkeley, shellmound, and the ohlone people who continue to reside here in the east bay. In a unanimous vote on tuesday night, the city of berkeley announced a settlement to purchase this city block, which is currently a parking lot serving the Fourth Street promenade. This is the largest urban land get back in the state of california to an to an indigenous tribe. The two acre site is believed to be part of the first human settlement in the bay area. The shellmound was a human made mound of earth and a place of sacred ceremonies. We are celebrating today the return of native lands to native hands. The land will be handed over to the seguret land trust. They plan on converting it back to a place of gathering and ceremony, and including an educational facility and museum about the ohlone people. We want to restore the native landscape and daylight. The creek that flows through this area. We want. Yes, we want to plant native medicines, native foods to honor the native people that were standing on right here. And thats the sad part that people do not even know that were here. Efforts to develop the site goes back several years. A Housing Development was planned and then blocked by the city, which designated the land as a historical landmark after a years long battle with the property owner, berkeley agreed to buy the land for 27 million. We wish them well. We wish the trust well and excited to see whats going to happen at the site. Tribal leaders say this is just the first step. Organizers are planning to start downtown first thursdays in may, and theyre going to hold these monthly. The plan calls for several blocks of Second Street to be shut down south of market. The Production Company behind this idea is the one that does the bhangra beats night market, and they say we could see beer gardens, dance floors and live music.
