How she wound up sheltering nearly 100 dogs from the worst storm in a lifetime. Its good to have everyone here as we kick off a busy tuesday morning. We want to get right to Hurricane Dorian inching closer to the u. S. Mainland. Take a look at the satellite showing where the storm is at this hour. It is huge and its still pounding the bahamas before moving north. Hurricane conditions possible along floridas coast as early as this afternoon. The carolinas under even more threat. Take a look at the power its packin that is the second story of a home right there in the bahamas. You see the waves lapping up slamming that house. Well have much more on Hurricane Dorian in a moment. First we want to get to the deadly boat fire off santa cruz island. Crews are still searching for survivors. Will carr is in oxnard with the very latest. Good morning, will. Reporter robin, the coast guard has been searching all morning. This was supposed to be a labor day adventure. Now the reality is getting in. At least eight people have died. Were expecting the death toll to jump throughout the course of the day. May day. Reporter a frantic call for help from the captain of the conception. 39 people on board, fully engulfed in claims. The may day call coming as 34 passengers remain trapped below deck with one exit. Are they locked inside the boat. Can you unlock the doors so they can get off. Reporter the captain the only one left above the flames with no way to battle the blaze from his position. You dont have any fighting gear . Reporter five crew members including the captain jump to safety escaping to a boat nearby. Bob and sally hansen tried to help the crew. They looked over and saw the conception in a blaze of fire with small explosions happening. While the crew members got medical attention on shore, family members of the missing gathered to comfort each other and wait for any sign of their loved ones. Very surreal. Reporter this morning more than 24 hours later divers searching in difficult conditions with officials describing the wreckage as unstable. The hope is that some of the passengers were able to jump into the water and swim to shore. The group was on a labor day diving excursion. They were sleeping in these bunk beds when the fire erupted. This room is supposed to have a fire extinguisher, but its tight fighting. Three passengers were celebrating birthdays including a 17yearold who was there with the teens parents. The coast guard says at this time Everyone Needs to be prepared for the worst case scenario. The coroner will identify the victims by dna. The owner of the boat is cooperating with investigats. George . Thanks, will. Were joined by bob hansen who helped rescue the survivors. Bob, thank you for joining us this morning. I know you were out on a boat out on the water. When did you first know that something had gone terribly wrong . About 3 30 in the morning my wife and i woke up to somebody pounding on the side of the boat so i put on a pair of shorts, waedhrough my salon and as i opened the door there were five men in an inflatable at the back of my boat, and at that time i looked and i could see a large boat on fire, probably about 400 yards from me. Were they able to explain to you what had happened . Well, they said that the they had woken up to fire on board. They had actually woken the captain up and it sounds like the captain tried to make a mayday call but the fire was so intense they ended up jumping off the boat and he said they swam around to the back of the boat where they had a tender or dinghy tied up and then motored over to our boat which like i say wasnt far away. Did they tell you, had they made any effort to try to save the passengers . So, when they opened the galley door which was the main exit for those people sleeping down below, they said there was so much fire in there that even the roof tiles were on fire and falling from the ceiling already inside that galley, so there was no access for them to get into the 34 guests that were below. Such a horrific scene but two of the survivors did try to go back to the boat . Yeah. We hailed the coast guard and we were instructed to, you know, i asked what i should do and they wanted me to just stay where i was and have the two of the crew members get back in their dinghy with a flashlight and go out to see if they could find any survivors that were out, had maybe gotten off and were in the water. Had you ever seen anything like this out on the water . Oh, never, no. Nothing like this. This was it was horrendous. That boat was 75 feet long and as soon as i saw it you know, as soon as i opened the door, it was totally engulfed in flames all the way from the bow to the stern, flames could have been 30 feet high. I mean, it was there wasnt a spot on that boat that wasnt burning. Bob hansen, thanks for telling your story and thanks for helping to save those survivors. It just was a horrific thing. One of those things ill never forget. It happened so fast. The way he described it. At this hour Hurricane Dorian is a category 3 storm with 120mileperhour winds. We have Team Coverage all across the storm zone and ginger starts us off from jupiter, florida. Good morning, ginger. Reporter michael, even windier here this morning. Weve seen gusts south of us to 61 Miles Per Hour but that beast that has not moved for at least 14 hours, its been stationary, is still about 100 miles east southeast of me here. So we are going to see impacts. That wind field has become broader, but boy, nothing like the bahamas has seen. This 48hour track shows you it coming over abaco, over the grand bahama island and stalling out over that island. The storm weakening but again that wind field broadening. Everybody saying when is it going to move. We anticipate that track to the north. It remains a category 3 with 120 mile per hour max sustained winds. It will move north toward the coast. Today and tomorrow are going to be the biggest impacts for floridas east coast but then South Carolina into North Carolina, its thursday into friday. So keep an eye on that because the closer it gets, the more rain you get, the more storm surge you get. The piling of water could be a major problem not just on the east coast of florida with these winds that could gust 50 to 70, but up along South Carolina and North Carolina. This really does happen for a reason. People are asking me why, why, why is it not moving. Youve had this blocking pattern that has not allowed for any steering winds but now theres this trough thats going to come in here and fight it out and allow for dorian to be pushed up north and east. Ill be covering it all morning, guys. But for now, lets head back to george. Okay, ginger. Because that storm did move, it left so much devastation across the bahamas, five People Killed. At least five People Killed and slammed the islands for nearly 48 hours and our marcus moore has been reporting from the island under treacherous conditions. Swim, swim reporter watch as the dangerous floodwaters sweep four people away. In a race against time our team is there, my producer urging them to swim for their lives until they reach safety on higher ground. The group rushing to a shelter in the eye of the storm, racing to safety before the dangerous winds return. Follow me, take your time. Reporter scenes like this undoubtedly playing out across the bahamas in the wake of deadly Hurricane Dorian. The devastation is breathtaking. You can see that building behind me collapsed and look at this yacht on the ground resting up against this condo. Thats the front porch. The war aut six feet. Reporter the rising floodwaters pouring into peoples homes. This video showing the water reaching the second floor apartment, creeping up the stairs and slamming into the window. The water so high, only rooftops were visible. And in this home, the floodwaters coming up the stairs. The furniture bobbing in the water. Ezra king and his cousin have been using a bulldozer to rescue people from their homes and take them to shelters. Category 5 storm shredding home after home. The Salvation Army estimating up to 13,000 have been damaged or destroyed. The coast guard using helicopters to rescue about a dozen people. Wplg reporter Jenise Fernandez describing the apocalypse scene. It looks like a bomb just went off. Mother nature is so much powerful than i could ever have imagined. Reporter rescuers receiving thousands of distress calls but floodwaters were too dangerous to traverse. Its extremely dangerous. Ive never seen anything like this before in my life. Reporter the Freeport Bahamas airport submerged. Residents returning to whats left in their community, now covered in debris for as far as the eye can see. Boats and cars littering the stres now a familiar scene. You can see the power of this storm. Trees have been snapped. This boat has been left on its top. Just absolutely incredible damage. Officials telling residents to stay indoors. Keep hammers ready in case they have to escape through the attic. Marcus joins us by satellite phone. Marcus, we can see how devastating dorian is. What are the conditions like right now . Reporter well, george, you heard ginger talking about how this has been 48 hours of intense and extreme weather and as i speak to you right now, im feeling a very strong wind gust. It just is not letting up. When you talk to residents, people who have sought shelter in some of the buildings here, theyve been asking me, where is the storm . Is it coming back . And its slowly moving to the north. Theyre just ready for the storm to move on so they can begin to try to put their lives back together. Ive got to tell you, it is absolutely catastrophic. I have never seen destruction like this on this scale on an island before. We can see that. Okay, marcus, stay safe. Robin . All right, george, thank you. Joining us now over the phone from freeport, bahamas is iram lewis, a member of parliament. And first of all, mr. Lewis, how are you doing this morning, sir . Right now its scary. This is Good Morning America but i wish i could say good morning, bahamas, but that is really not the case. Right now, thank god for life, but theres so many unknowns right now because its dark, the communication is down. We do not know whats going on right now. So were praying that once it breaks we can get out there and do a proper assessment and rescue whoever is still out there that needs to be rescued. So im sure were going to have to go into recovery and rescue mode as soon as possible. Yes, sir. I know that there were so many calls that have been going out, especially yesterday as well, and those efforts had to be largely called off because of the ongoing poor conditions. Is it any better today . Do you think that the rescue crews will be able to go out today . Yes, the wind has abated a bit and we are hoping that the water has subsided, gone down. There are reports that water is going down a bit around 9 30 last night. However, there was high tide in between then and now so we still do not know. But to answer your question, listening outside right now, the wind is still howling but it is much better than it was yesterday. So were hoping that this hurricane continues to drift west northwest or anywhere north of us so that once daybreak we will be able to get the rescue teams out there and do as much as we can to help people. You mentioned the flooding. Your colleague, the minister of agriculture, posted video from inside of his home with the rising water inside and outside as well. Have you ever, ever seen anything like this, mr. Lewis . Never seen anything like this in my life. Never seen anything like this. Water was rising. He and his wife and young daughter were stuck inside. They went upstairs to try to do whatever they could do. Whatever flotation device they could find, tie it altogether. Just praying to god to keep them safe. As it is right now, could not communicate with him so i do not know what is going on right now with him but i can say conditions have improved weatherwise. Were hoping that we can get out as soon as we can. And help as many as we can as long as we can. God bless you, sir. Glad the conditions are improving. Thank you so much for your time this morning and just know that our hearts go out to everyone that is there. Thank you, sir, so much. You please take care. We appreciate you, robin. We appreciate you, america. Thank you. Youre welcome. Thank you, sir. The storm has just been relentless. Devastating. They need so much help. They do. Devastating images as well. Here in the u. S. Reporter Hurricane Dorian threatening almost 1,000 miles of coastline from palm beach, florida, all the way up to North Carolinas outer banks. Despite the warnings not all have evacuated just yet. This man venturing out to test the waters in palm beach and wiping out from the massive waves. Even before the storm has hit, treacherous waves causing boats to sink off the florida coast. Florida Officials Say the category 3 storm has forced seven hospitals and 72 Nursing Homes to evacuate. Several airports in florida completely shutting down. More than a thousand flights canceled. In parts of South Carolina, highways turning into oneway roads as residents flee. For those who have decided to ride out the storm a flurry of lastminute preparations. And we also know that walmart will be closing 50 stores today, possibly even more as this thing gets closer, but a lot of people just taking this very seriously, robin. As they should. That is a live look at the satellite showing Hurricane Dorian right now. It has been stalled over the bahamas for more than 48 hours. Look at the winds it delivered on that island. It does pear to be moving north later today. It is causing catastrophic damage as we can see. Take a look at the grand Bahama International airport in freeport. Well, thats a mess and now the east coast is bracing for ates of emergency have been declared from florida to virginia. So lets go back to ginger in jupiter, florida. Ginger, as youve been saying one of the biggest threats we have to look out for is storm surge. Reporter yes, robin, the piling up of this morning the winds obviously im getting sand blasted here but look at this. This is low tide. So this is the lowest its going to get. There should be a beach that extends much farther out. There is not this morning and this is only going to get worse today. Our high tide happens just before noon. You pair that with the piling of water on the order of two to four feet of storm surge or four to seven, its going to be a problem. Look at this. We saw a lot of folks yesterday doing just what this man is doing, sitting out on the piers and taking pictures and looking and then this happens. He is so fortunate he is alive and well today because you dont want to be doing that. It is only going to get worse, the beach is not the place and certainly not up here, or a jetty that goes out because this angry sea is coming from a hurricane that we have seen what damage it can do. So storm surge warnings extend up along the coast up to South Carolina but i want to go up to rob marciano who is up there in Melbourne Beach to describe a bit more of their concern. Reporter good morning to you, ginger. Were looking at the tide beginning to come in. As you mentioned, high tide right around this area at noon and then again at midnight. With this storm moving so slowly, well have several iterations of that. See our second camera, it will give you an idea of the surf out here. This storm is about 100 miles away and the way its been all night long. You have the surge, the waves and the astronomically high tides. The king tides are adding another two to three feet to this area. What is good about this part of florida is that on the east coast, on the atlantic side, we have for the most part these protective dunes and were camped out at a house ten feet behind a dune thats 15 feet high. So when you talk about a four to seven foot surge this area wont be breached. Theres a number of areas along a1a that will see overrun and see breach and we will see people cut off from the main land. Thats why the Barrier Islands have been evacuated but these warnings go all the way up to South Carolina and watches beyond that. This slowmoving storm means that these onshore winds will continue all day, tonight and all night and overnight tonight and that means the water will do nothing but pile up. Guys, back over to you. Take every precaution. Dont let your guard down. Thank you, rob. Well have much more on the storm ahead, but now to that chaotic scene at Newark Airport overnight. An investigation is under way after a false alarm sent passengers panicking fleeing the terminal. Eva pilgrim is there in newark, new jersey, with the details. Good morning, eva. Reporter good morning, michael. It was chaos and confusion here at newark. Passengers running after they were told to evacuate. Take a look at this video. You can see about 200 people rushing to get out of terminal a and this started at about 8 30 when an Alaskan Airlines employee approached two men at a gate. They both took off. The employee concerned hit the alarm. In the rush to evacuate many leaving behind their bags. Those two men have been identified and have been questioned by police. They are not facing any charges at this time. All the passengers were able to return to the airport and to their bags and to their flights. This morning, the airport is saying there is no danger and terminal a is back open. Michael . Definitely a scary situation for those passengers, thank you so much, eva. Robin . Had to be frightening. New details about the deadly mass shooting in texas. This morning were learning the gunman who went on that rampage leaving seven people dead and 22 injured, that gunman was federally banned from owning a arm. Raising new questions about how he got it. Matt gutman is in odessa, texas with the latest. Good morning, matt. Reporter robin, that rampage ended with a massive shootout with police behind me. Hundreds of moviegoers evacuated from that theatre diving for cover in this field here. But it began 90 minutes earlier, that gunman fired from his job and we have now learned that he called the police and the fbi in the minutes before he began shooting. Get down. Get down. Its okay. Reporter this morning we learned that gunman seen here Ramming Police cars, bullets flying in this finale to his rampage, called police and the fbi minutes before the shooting started. It was a very incoherent call, didnt make any threats. Reporter he had also threatened his neighbor who told us that he would shoot that arstyle rifle out of his window at night. She told us she called the police about it, but says they never came. 36yearold seth ator had just been fired from his trucking job that saturday morning. Thats when both the gunman and his employer called 911. He did call the police from his place of work claiming that he was being held there against his will. Reporter the gunman then carving a tenmile path of bullets and bodies thrgh the odessa midland area. Killing seven people and wounding at least 25. Its okay. Its going to be okay. Whos shooting . Its okay. Reporter the first victim a state trooper who pulled him over for a turn signal violation unaware about those calls to police. The rampage continued for over an hour. More than 20 different shooting locations. Lockdowns in both cities, a local tv anchor even leaving his desk during a broadcast. We probably need to get off the air. Reporter at one point the gunman hijacked this Postal Service vehicle killing Mary Granados seen here delivering mail earlier in the day. Her twin sister on the phone with her as the shooting began. She didnt imagine that she was this was going to happen, you know. She didnt know what it was. Reporter among the wounded 17monthold Anderson Davis recovering at home this morning after shrapnel was removed from her chest. Her mother recounting the horror as the bullets flew to local midland station kosa. I knew that we had been shot but it never dawned on me that one of us would be hit. So i actually just thought how can i cover both of these babies at one time. Reporter this man, mark gonzalez, telling kosa he looked right into the eye of the killer. The main thing was that i saw in his eyes, that hate, you know, that he was trying to do something, not just injure me, but i know he was trying to take me out. Reporter Law Enforcement sources tell me he was on that federally prohibited list from possessing a firearm because he had been diagnosed as being clinically mentally ill. Now investigators turn to try to figure out how he illegally obtained this arstyle rifle that destroyed so many lives and whether anybody helped him. George . So many holes in that background checks system. Okay, matt, thanks very much. In august alone 53 People Killed in mass shootings. That is putting pressure on congress and the white house to act. Democratic candidates ramping it up too and our senior Congressional Correspondent mary bruce is tracking all the latest. Good morning, mary. Reporter good morning, george. There is a new urgency here on the hill to tackle this rising violence. This will be front and center when Congress Comes back into session next week. Behind the scenes there have been ongoing conversations about possibly boosting background checks or doing the socalled red flag laws. But what comes next, whether we see any major changes here depends largely on the president. Republican lawmakers are looking to him for guidance and some political cover, but the president is sending mixed messages. He is promising some kind of action, but right now it is unclear what steps hes willing to support. After the shootings in dayton and el paso, the president pushed for meaningful background checks but since then he seems to be backtracking and said this shooting over the weekend hasnt really changed anything. Hes speaking much more about Mental Illness right now and speaking a lot with the nra as well. Is there any chance you see for some kind of a bipartisan compromise here . Reporter well, george, there is some bipartisan support here on the hill for gun reforms and we do know that overwhelmingly americans are demanding change. More than 90 of voters say they support universal background checks, but legislation to deliver that has been sitting on republican leader Mitch Mcconnells desk since february, while out on the campaign trail many of the kwa candidates are skeptical. Joe biden says theres simply no room for compromise. He says the only way is to vote republicans out. Elizabeth warren seems to be more open to compromise. Mary, thanks very much. Ten of those candidates will be on the stage next thursday night september 12th at 8 00 eastern for the next debate right here on abc. Well see what they have to say. Dorian will be east of that. Most of the models have come into agreement of where it is going to track. But we could still see 10 to 15 inches of rain in some of the higher pockets, especially coastal North Carolina so well watch that and, of course, the surge and the winds that are kicking up here as it traverses east of us. Well, thats been trending and well get to it a little later on and get the Science Behind it. George, you always got something, man. That is coming up. We begin with the latest on Hurricane Dorian devastating the bahamas. Its been over that island more than 48 hours, now moving towards the u. S. Mainland. States of emergency declared in five states from florida, virginia. We want to go back to florida. Ginger is there in jupiter. Good morning, ginger. Good morning, george. The winds have picked up. Now we have an update. Dorian is finally moving northwest at one mile per hour after 14 hours of seeing it stationary. I dont know the last time ive seen a hurricane of this nature staying stationary just north of the grand bahama island but look at the gusts along the florida coastline. These are going to increase as that storm inches closer through the day today. The track taking it northwest and then north. The farther it stays away, the worst part of the storm stays out in the ocean but we will still see gusts easily in the 40 to 70mileperhour range and then South Carolina, North Carolina and the georgia coastlines need to watch. All of the models, the spaghetti plots, finally coming into agreement that it could make a landfall there from South Carolina to North Carolina, so reminiscent of matthew, unfortunately. 10 to 15 inches of rain are possible including wilmington but a lot of places could get 6 to 10 inches. Thats on top of the 4 to 7 feet of storm surge we see cutting off islands up and down the coast here in florida. Even if it stays out to sea as it is anticipated to do, the center, we will feel that broadening wind field today into tomorrow along the coast here. George . Cannot relax yet. Okay, ginger, thanks very much. Robin. We turn to that deadly boat fire thats off californias santa cruz island. Rescue crews are still searching for survivors. Well go back to abcs will carr who is there at the coast guard station in oxnard with the very latest. Good morning again, will. Below deck there were 34 passengers sleeping. Some had celebrated their birthdays the night before. Divers are combing the bottom of the pacific ocean. Justin bieber revealing his serious struggles with drugs and making bad decisions saying its taken him years to bounce back. Now hes thanking the people who helped him recover and amy is back with more. Hey, amy. Yeah, justin talks about his lightning fast journey from being a small town boy to living life in the spotlight and how he then made, quote, every bad decision you could have thought of. What do you mean reporter this morning, a candid Justin Bieber opening up about his past struggles with fame, drugs and women. Make up your mind what do you mean reporter sharing overnight on instagram that its hard to get out of bed in the morning with the right attitude when you are overwhelmed with your life, your past, job, responsibilities, emotions, your family, finances, your relationships. When it feels like theres trouble after trouble after trouble, sometimes it can even get to the point where you dont even want to live anymore. Baby baby oh reporter the 25yearold who skyrocketed to fame when he was just 13 saying, i went from a boy from a small town to being praised left and right by the world with millions saying how much they loved me and how great i was. You hear these things and you actually start believing it. Everyone did everything for me so i never learned the fundamentals of responsibility. If i was your boyfriend id never let you go reporter bieber was 18 when his song boyfriend hit the charts. I got money in my hands he said at that age he had no skills in the real world with millions of dollars and access to whatever i wanted. By 20 i made every bad decision you could have thought of and went from one of the most loved and adored people in the world to the most ridiculed. He has walked off the stage in england. He was caught vandalizing a neighbors house in california. Rebellion and growth and missteps and getting an arrest or encounters with the law, most of us had the luxury of turning 19 or 20 privately and doing things stupidly privately. He didnt have that luxury. Reporter he wrote, i started doing heavy drugs at 19 and abused all of my relationships. I became resentful, disrespectful to women and angry. I became distant to everyone who loved me. I felt like i could never turn it around. He was a young guy, he had tremendous fame. He was pigeonholed as a goody two shoes teen star, and then he grew up and, you know, i know a lot of 19yearolds who misbehave. He happened to be Justin Bieber. Reporter the superstar saying hes in a better place, married to Hailey Baldwin with years of what he calls terrible decisions and broken relationships behind him. And justin adding at the end of that post, quote, when the odds are against you, keep fighting, and saying he is now learning patience, trust, commitment, humility, all the things he says it takes to be a good man. We are rooting him on. We are. Its great that hes so open about this. Probably will help other people. I think it will help a lot of people. You are not alone. Thanks for sharing that. Now to the cdcs new warning about vaping and counterfeit cartridges, saying products off the street may be more harmful as Health Officials investigate the possible connection between vaping marijuana and serious lung illnesses. Paula faris has that story for us. Good morning, paula. Good morning, robin. Good morning, everyone. Over 200 people in 25 states have come down with a mysterious respiratory infection. Its so serious the cdc and the fda are now involved. This morning, the cdc is warning that americans stop buying ecigarette and cannabis products off the street, nor any substances to vape devices that are not intended by the manufacturer. This alert coming after a recent outbreak of a mysterious respiratoryrelated illness. More than 200 reported cases across 25 states, all appearing to be associated with vaping. Dr. Dixie harris, a pulmonologist with Intermountain Health care in Salt Lake City identified 19 vapingrelated illnesses. Not all our patients are having or express pulmonary symptoms. Typically fevers are 101 to 104. Its very similar to a flulike illness. Reporter these xrays show the kind of lung damage that has Health Officials concerned. What you see is these patchy, what we call infiltrates, or cloudy areas. When i see a patient with this much involvement of the lung, i know that they are in severe respiratory distress. Reporter the cdc is investigating the cases with the food and Drug Administration and state Health Departments saying, more information is needed to better understand whether theres a relationship between any specific products or substances and the reported illnesses. At this time there does not appear to be one product involved in all of the cases. The specific substances within the ecigarette products that cause illness are not known and could involve a variety of substances. The Vapor Technology association and ecigarette and vaping Industry Trade group urged Public Officials to thoroughly investigate the circumstances which might have led to each reported hospitalization before making statements to the public as to whether certain products are implicated in these incidents. And the cdc recommends that if youre concerned about the possible health risks, then refrain from using cigarettes or vaping during their ongoing investigation. But heres the bottom line, dont buy products off the street. Also if its not intended to be vaped by the manufacturer, dont do it. Robin . Common sense there. All right. Thanks so much, paula. Now dr. Jen ashton is here. Tell us what is going on medically. This is pretty dramatic. Its being called this mysterious pulmonary issue. People who have reported this had this violent respiratory distress. They report preceding nausea, vomiting, fever. It almost looks gastrointestinal then looks like infectious pneumonia, chest pain, difficulty breathing, unstable vital signs leading in some cases to low blood oxygenation requiring ventilatory support in some cases, icu admission. I want to point out this xray. This was given to abc news by a patient 18 years old. You see on the left her before. Nice black spaces in the lungs showing aeration. On the right, we call that a complete whiteout. You cannot oxygenate your blood when your chest xray looks like this. This is a patient who had admitted to using ecigs. 18 years old. Right. We dont expect to see that in someone that young. Do we know whats contributing to the illnesses, the nicotine, thc . It is unknown. A lot of the reported cases so far do seem to be associated with ecig use that contains thc but i want to be very clear here. There are solvents that get heated in the process that then can cause these lipoid or fatlike droplets. They do not belong in lungs. We dont know whether these are from counterfeit or bootleg product or whether they happen to some people who may be predisposed. I want to be nuclear, when we dont know, you have to err on the side of caution. Still so many more questions we dont have answers to. Well be staying on this as are public Health Officials. Thanks so much. Back to ginger in jupiter, florida, for us. Ginger . Robin, these winds just increasing as we go here. Tropical Storm Force Winds actually extend 160 miles outside dorian. Thats why we want to show you the wind field and what to anticipate the next couple of days. We will have Tropical Storm force or close to 40mileperhour winds sustained along the coast of florida into georgia and South Carolina. But watch that orange bubble. Thats the one that will represent the 58 plus, that starts to touch charleston, eventually wilmington and thats why were concerned about it as it moves along the coast. Now to a new series were kicking off as the school year begins. Its called anchoring anxiety and this morning were looking at the link between parents and their children. Research from the National Academy of sciences suggests that parents with anxiety are more likely to have kids with anxiety. Heres how one mother realized what she was passing down and what she did about it. When tiffany bakers son milo was 3 he had typical toddler fears. He was scared of the dark. He was scared of thunderstorms. He was scared of strangers. Reporter but when milo showed more unusual fears like worrying about the shower turning on when he was in the bath, tiffany suspected her son was sensing her anxiety and replicating it. Im an anxious flier, an anxious car rider. Ive just been an anxious person. Reporter so to help milo, tiffany sought therapy for herself. She wrote about her experience for the online magazine motherly saying the writing want on the wall. My anxiety had become a problem. The wisdom i received from being in therapy was that the better option was to help him face what he was afraid of. Reporter she learned mindful breathing to calm her own anxiety and changed her language with her son replacing be careful with a calmer let me know if you need help. I make sure that i communicate to him that i believe in him, that i think hes capable. Reporter today milo is a welladjusted 9yearold who takes risks and pitches for his baseball team. Were joined now by our parenting expert rachel simmons. Rachel, welcome. [ applause ] so tiffany was able to tell when her son was picking up on her anxiety. What are the clues parents should look for . One thing you can see is whether or not your child is reacting to the same things that make you anxious. So lets say im nervous about getting places on time. I get snappy, i get angry and then i start to see my own child get snappy about being somewhere on time. Thats a sign i need to look at my behavior. Keep your anxiety in check. We definitely have to work on keeping our anxiety in check. In fact, heres the thing i want to say to all parents first, parenting is an anxious profession. We dont keep our kids alive by looking the other way and so we have to be a little bit easy on ourselves about the fact that we all get nervous. But i think its important to do a few things. First of all, when our kids go out to play we dont say be careful or get them to worry about something bad that will happen. We say have a good time, be brave. And when they come home from school, we dont say what happened to you at school that was bad today, who was mean to you . We say how was your day. Who did you hang out with. Tell me something that surprised you. We have to work on not overreacting so we dont want to react from our lizard brain, our anxious and angry brain that makes us say things were not going to be proud of. And say ill chill out and respond with intention and im not going to match my kids feelings when shes upset. We all know everyone deals with some anxiety at some point. How do we know when its beyond the healthy range . The number one thing we want to look for at parents is whether or not our kids are able to engage in their daily activities. Look, i mean i think we all have thoughts about not wanting to go places. I might say, oh, im worried about going on the air with Good Morning America. Im nervous about that, but im here. Im doing it. If i wasnt able to come because i had so many thoughts about what is george going to think of me and whats the audience going to think of me and am i going to be okay, thats a sign that i need to get help. If you can follow through and you still have those thoughts, youre going to be okay. If they see their kids are being influenced by their anxiety, whats the first thing they should do . So many great resources for parents. First of all, see a counselor or a therapist if you can. Having a partner to help is so keep. Join a group. Go on social media for help and join a mindfulness g fortressbased reduction group. All of those things are wonderful. The most generous thing you can do is help yourself. Rachel simmons, thanks for coming in. When we come back, bill hader is here live. Hi there. Happening today, the site of the gilroy garlic festival will reopen. Three people died, 13 were hurt. The community is invited to take part in a moment of silence at 10 30 at a temporary memorial site. Access to parts of the park will be limited to allow newly planted grass to grow. Lets get a check on traffic. Its slow everywhere around the bay. You can find the usual delays southbound 880 still jammed through hayward because of an earlier motorcycle crash. Its a crawl through hayward and even getting on to the san mateo bridge. Also westbound 580 backed up to positive for dorian, the fact that its weakening down to 110 miles pr hour. A new eye wall trying to form which would not be good news. Lets look at whats going on. A few low clouds and fog. Cool this morning. Warm this afternoon. And light breezes on the water. The 7day, still a little bit above average. Well settle into the mid 60s, mid im a sucker for you say the word welcome back to gma. And i posed this question to you two earlier. You gave me an answer. George gave me, well, which pizza and which cereal. Well, we have some cereal here. We have some pizza here. Which do you guys think is a more balanced breakfast . The pizza, applause for pizza. [ applause ] or is the cereal more of a balanced breakfast . [ applause ] so about even. Well, the headline that caught our attention trending on facebook. A nutritionist claiming that your average slice of pizza packs a bigger protein punch than a bowl of sugary cereal. The cheese and tomatoes are much better for you than the carbs and added sugar that are found in many cereals. But which one looks better . Look at the cereal. I mean, come on. Make it fair. Frosted flakes gets me every time. Pepperoni. Why dont we just eat them both . How about that . [ cheers and applause ] but were not done. Weve good some celebrating to do later this week because thursday is National Cheese pizza day, everybody. [ applause ] and you cant have a day like that without throwing a huge pizza party right here in times square. So you guys make sure you do not miss that. Thats right. [ applause ] get ready. Get ready. Ill be working out till thursday. Our next guest, hes one of the funniest guys in hollywood. You know him from saturday night live and barry now back on the big screen in the horror movie it chapter two. Please welcome bill hader. [ cheers and applause ] am i supposed to follow it . Okay. Hi, robin. [ applause ] oh. I know. See, what was supposed to happen i brought that and didnt work as well. We have to say congratulations. You know, this mans show barry has 17 emmy nominations. Wow. [ applause ] you ready. Oh, yeah, im rey. No, its fun. Its very nice. I was very happy that steven root and Anthony Carrigan and Sara Goldberg all got nominated. 17. Thank you. When youre nominated for 17 emmys and you have three young daughters. But 17 emmy, you got to go home. They must be impressed. They could care less. I do a voice in finding dory and i went and i took my daughters to it and my part is coming up and im looking at them and my voice came on and my 6yearold just stood up and walked out. [ laughter ] i was like, whats going on. You didnt tell me you were in this. Dad. Thats embarrassing. I have friends here. This is like all right. Have they seen barry. No, or thismovie. It. I showed them the trailer, they were like, what. Why is that clown so mean . You have been in so many hits. Youve got to clear up something because when you look at your bio, your credit, the first thing listed is a Janet Jackson video you appear in. Yeah. [ cheers and applause ] thats not me. What . Thats not me. Ive been asked about that forever. This is that is not me right there. That is not me and its listed in your credits. I know. This is crazy but things on the internet are lies. A man who weighed over 500 pounds making a huge change in his life and it all started by working for a food delivery service. Yeah, its amazing. It turns out shopping for others helped him better himself. Everyone, im antonio, live. Reporter Antonio Martinez never really thought about groceries until he started delivering them for a living. Growing up he had paid little attention to how much he ate and his weight began to creep up. At his heaviest antonio weighed over 520 pounds. Thats when he decided it was time to get more active and make major life changes including getting a job that kept him on his feet. He started working for the Grocery Delivery Service instacart and while he was more active it also got him looking at his clients food orders and thinking about weighs to make healthier choices. Today youll never guess what antonio looks like. [ cheers and applause ] are you guys are you guys ready to see antonio now . Drum roll, please. Anton joe, come on out, my friend. [ cheers and applause ] come on over, antonio. Hi, how is it going. Congratulations. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Appreciate it. Now, i know, antonio, you used to wear a 5xl shirt. Yes. You were over 500 pounds. Yes, i was. Now i can tell this will not fit you. So how much weight did you actually lose . Closer to 300 pounds ive lost. Unbelievable. [ applause ] how does that feel, you know, to shed that. It definitely is, you know lighter load to carry so feels good. I touched on it in the piece. Tell us about the moment when you said its time . I need to make that change . You know, i was just uncomfortable, you know, just sweating, just being still and then my wife dropped the bomb and was like, oh, i want to have kids and im like, oh, i dont know how im going to do that because, one, i can barely take care of myself and i didnt know if i would be a good father or mott. But what was it like for you when you first started working for instacart . You know, it was definitely grueling at first because, like my many crossfit sessions every day it was just me going around shopping, customers orders at the store, being active, walking then i would get that breather getting in the car and then just deliver and then catch my breath, get off, grab cases of water, go up two, three flights of stairs. Builtin workout. Builtin workout and getting paid so i was like, okay. Just wasnt a physical change for you. This was a change of your whole lifestyle. Well take a look. Many explain what you used to eat before. My lifestyle was very, very different before. For example, this was like a typical meal, two value size meals that i would get from a fast food chain and then, you know, cough it up with, you know, some ice cream and chips, chocolate, my guilty pleasure. Well, now lets take a look at how youve made the change. Bring it on. [ applause ] your new food program. Antonio, this looks a lot better. It is. It is. It was definitely a little different or way different. Essentially i just knew that the aspect of being healthy was not of being active wouldnt be the only thing i would have to do. You got creative. Instead of bread you would use lettuce. Yeah, yeah. [ applause ] so, thank you. So i went and changed it up. I had to educate myself by looking at customers orders and saw if they were fit, what are they eating . Thats what i need to start doing so i stumbled upon the keto diet when i delivered to i acustomer and essentially thats what i live on right now. Working and learning. [ applause ] for anybody out there, it takes a lot of discipline. It took you five years to lose over 300 pounds. Its not instant but we appreciate your story, antonio. And, look, guys, theres t baby. Theres the baby. Love those pictures. Congratulations for everything, man. Appreciate it. Thats really awesome. Also inspiring. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor. Shes here to talk about her new book, just ask be different, be brave, be you. Thank you for coming in. The book is right here. [ applause ] i want to tell you at the start i have friends, i brought in ringers here to help with questioni questioning. You obviously didnt want to work too much. Not this morning. Kneed a little help. In fact, a young Sonia Sotomayor is actually a character in this book. Yes. Tell us about that. Well, when i was 7 1 2 years old, i was diagnosed with a condition called juvenile diabetes. And what juvenile diabetes has meant for me, that ever since that day and its been more than 57 years ago, ive been giving myself insulin shots every day. And ive learned how to do it because i wanted the freedom to live my life in the way everybody else does, but it also made me realize there are so many kids in the world who live with their own conditions, theres so many of them and each one of us lives with our condition and we live well and successfully, but sometimes people look at us as if were different, but different in a bad way. So one day im in a restaurant and im in the bathroom giving myself an injection and this woman walks in and sees me finishing up and putting my injection away and i walk out and at the end of our meal, i get up to walk past her and i overhear her say to her companion, shes a drug addict. Whoa. And i stopped and i was embarra embarrassed and i turned around and i walked back to the woman and said, im not a drug addict. Im a diabetic. And you saw me taking insulin which is a drug that saves my life. Dont presume the worst in people who do different things. [ applause ] thats a good message. Sofia, do you have a question but i asked i ended with just ask. So this book has been in my head for 30 odd years. And its out now. Fantastic. Its out now. Sofia, whats your question. What is the hardest part about justice . Ah, that theres really often no really right or wrong answer. See, in every case there is a winner and what happens when theres a winner, whats the opposite . Theres a loser. Thats the hardest part of doing justice, which you know no matter how right you think you are under the law, and thats the way i vote when i decide a case, you know that the other side doesnt feel like youve really done them justice. [ applause ] rihanna. When you dont have any work to do, what do you do for fun . Ah. [ applause ] i love reading and i love bicycle riding. [ applause ] and you brought a big smile. It looks like you like it as well. I wish we had more time. Im afraid we dont. Thank you for coming. I know. Valerie, you can ask me your question before we leave. When you were a kid what did you want to be when you grow up . When i was young, i wanted to be a detective like nancy drew. [ applause ] thank you. Thanks for coming in this morning. Just ask be different, be brave, be you is out right now and well be right back. [ applause ] find the brands you love from nordstrom. Up to 70 off at nordstrom rack. Thats fashion at a fraction.
