But that can be untethered from what the founders understood bribery to beat which was at least common law bribery and the founders were not unmindful of the fact that they were writing a constitution which had a congress which had the authority to pass laws including a federal bribery statute. Paul we have a current bribery statute. Does what the president did on the evidence so far qualify as bribery under that statute . Whoever, being a public official, corruptly demands or seeks personally anything of value in return for being influenced in the performance of an official acrid thats the bribery statute. Paul why does this not qualify . Ship says it does. In the context of what they allege is an illegal Foreign Campaign contribution, that being the benefit drive to donald trump personally of the announcement in a press conference of investigations in ukraine regarding the 2016 election charisma in the bidens. Thats a battle between the branches and the executive branch and legislate a branch. There are reasons why a president because of the sanctity of conversations and confidentiality necessary to do your job why he would want to protect those conversations from being disclosed to another branch of government. To try to turn that into abuse of office or contempt of congress is ridiculous because the question is whether those claims are legitimate and the only place to ultimately settle that is before a court and the democrats have decided to forgo that. You are now seen the candidates in a smaller field more willing to realize this problem are not winning ideas with the American Public or even with a big sector of democratic primary voters were not on the progressive left. I think one thing that came through is the new emerging argument among these moderate democrats which is that they will talk about polarization. All of them, biden, mayor pete, harris and booker were making a big tent proposition and in the case of Amy Klobuchar they were feeling for votes from moderates, independents, even republicans so the idea is that donald trump has polarized the country and people are tired of that and we will let everybody like pete buddha judge said is welcome into our tent. Paul kim, thats a different theory of the campaign because the Warren Bernie sanders area of the campaign is that you have to counter Donald Trumps conservative populism with more leftwing populism economic restructuring and a radical agenda and that mobilizes their base. Look, why is Elizabeth Warren concession on medicare so meaningful . She was bowing to the reality that a big structural change is in fact that she and Bernie Sanders have been advocating, scares a whole lot of people and that if you want to win an election and if you want to then have an agenda that you get a look support behind its not going to be for big, crazy ideas like that. The theme that was coming out of so many of these candidates was we need to build on progress that weve made so far and stays true to our ideas but in a way that will not do bad things to the economy and scare the American People. Paul sanders and warren still have a problem is they split the progressive vote and it means one of them cant consolidate. If they could they might have an excellent shot at the nominati nomination. That is what makes the rise of someone like mayor Pete Buttigieg or other moderate is because they are looking at potentially splitting the biden vote and instead of biden and the twoway split you have a fourway split in and who knows what happens. An outsider like mayor pete is a little hard for me to see that. Having said that i agree with what Pete Buttigieg has shown as he can take a punch. He was up there on that stage whenever they attack him hes extraordinarily adept at turning it around and wait you just suggested and making a positive out of these negatives. He has real skills and its early in the campaign but if he wins iowa the fact that hes ahead of Bernie Sanders in New Hampshire is extraordinary, considering sanders background and reputation. Paul kim, if you look back in history democrats have a tendency to fall in love with these outsiders and it often works well for them with jimmy carter, 1976. No one knew where he was nationally and build clinton came out of arkansas, barack obama firstterm senator and they all one. Maybe democrats they tend to fall in love with this new, young charismatic person. Is that what is going on here . I was just going to say Pete Buttigieg reminds me of barack obama. Look at all the negatives, little name recognition, to some extent, a lack of experience but also at the same time this uniting message. I would wager most people cannot tell you what Pete Buttigieg policy proposals are but he is roderick and he speaks very well and talks about bring people together and democrats do love that. Right now kyles analysis of some of his weaknesses are very true but its also the case that if he were to win iowa and then New Hampshire he will get a big second look in those fall along states and it could be enough to propel him.
