Oing to Get Out of it together. Thats what i usually did for me. Im bill, were on the California Coast and this is cnn thanks so much for joining us. Im Jessica Dean in washington alongside my colleague Jim Sciutto in tel aviv. We have Breaking News in The Middle East and also here in the u. S. That were monitoring and thats where we start in the Southeastern United States where the Death Toll from the devastating storm, Helene May is rising this afternoon. Officials now saying at least 64 people were killed across five states. And there are fears that number will likely grow scores of people remain unaccounted for, especially in parts of western North Carolina the damage there is simply catastrophic. Roads and bridges washed out destroyed entire towns remain underwater right now. And more than 2 Million people are still without power. Helene made landfall as a category four hurricane on thursday, but today, Rescue And Recovery efforts still remain a challenge many people are cut off because roads are impassable. They dont have power or communications because its so difficult to get trucks in by land yesterday, we began Airlifting Supplies, including Food And Water into the regiOn Cnns Rafael Romo has been surveying the damage and talking with people in asheville, North Carolina. Were so much damage has been done. He joins us now on the phone, rafael, were looking at pictures right now of the beginning of cleanup in asheville, North Carolina, but there is still so much should we done Rescue And Recovery efforts still underway thats right, jessica, so much the gun and the major problems remain, lack of water no flour for many people in asheville, there are other towns that are also without any service and North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper described what happened here as widespread, catastrophic damage. The Hurricane Helene has caused the western part of the state, especially. Hes issued a major disaster, Disaster Declaration for 25 western North Carolina counties and the eastern band of the cherokees. Business ester, a declaration has already been approved by the White House and it will provide funding for the individual Assistant Program and people are already signing up. And thats a good thing because they need here is so great jessica, and weve been going to the front neighbors, neighborhoods in the city we went earlier to a neighborhood called west asheville, where a resident told us the River Overflowed its banks, bringing all kinds of Debris And Ash to The Streets in front of her house. Lets take a listen its undescribable. I dont know. It just was covered in litter in trees and mud and its stinky and it was all the way up The Street appear it just looks like the bottom of a River County officials said yesterday, there are more than 60 people who are accounted for today. They said they have received more than 1,000 reports of missing people, and that the main problem here, like i was saying, before, just goes is communications including both mobile Service And Internet people cannot call to let their relatives, the Loved Ones know that theyre okay and i can imagine that most of those 1,000 people are probably okay, is just very difficult for them to communicate with the outside world and led their families know whats going on here . So a very dire situation here, and its going to take many weeks, many months before this part of the country and gets back to normal. Jessica really devastating. All right. Rafael romo on the ground there in North Carolina. Thank you so much and for more, lets bring in evan peterson. Hes a national spokesperson for the american red cross. Evan, thanks. So much for being here with us of course, we really appreciate taking the time to talk about this very important topic. And lets just start first and Level Set for people because we do, do whether coverage a lot. And i think helping people understand the scope of this particular disaster and what people are seeing right now, can you help people . Understand, give them some context around the damage that has been done but ill certainly do my best just to paint a picture. Imagine youre looking at the united states like you would on a school chalkboard. This storm we are talking about is impacted millions of people. And to put that into perspective, were talking about from the southernmost point of Florida All The Way up to the midwest. And now we see remnants of Hurricane Helene over in the Northeast Portion of the country along this path, where were not just talking about Hurricane Force winds that have cut off power to so many people. But we are talking deadly water rising and now receding, which is still moving water which can be very dangerous on top of that, weve heard about the Infrastructure Problems in terms of getting communication, the fear of not being able to talk with your Loved Ones. It has been so horrible for so many people, but thats where we come in. We had the good fortune of being able to see this coming on the radar. And thanks to reports like you all are providing, we moved people and resources says into these areas in the path of the storm in advance. So that when the allclear was given, we had a place to welcome people in who needed refuge to provide Comfort And Care for so many who need it . And so what are you seeing as the greatest needs right now greatest needs right now, our organization is focused on whats going on in the media. Weve talked about how that Water Level is still receding in some areas. So imagine theres there are people who, for the better part of a week have not had a chance to return home yet for some people, when they do get that allclear, they go back. They see just a puddle on their Front Door and maybe thats the extent of the damage, but i would definitely say that that is the minority of people. A lot of people are going home if their home is still standing, there opening the door to a foot of water inside their Home Or Worstcase scenario, their home is no longer there anymore, so were working to provide comfort care, meals for people. And then if someone to listen to, we note this is the fourth storm now and just over a year, the trauma thats associated with continuing to deal with this is very palpable and we want people to know were going to get through this together and, looking specifically at North Carolina, i know there the Governor Roy Cooper says his state is now Airlifting Supplies to people in need because so many of the roads simply are impassable at this point, or do you mentioned just broadly, infrastructure has been damaged as well. Are you all encountering challenges in trying to get to people . Well, the exact same challenges we are communicating with our team at every level in our counterparts at every level of a disaster response, not just like the residents that live in these communities, in the Community Partners that are there. But at the municipal county, the state and even the federal government we are trying to find ways to get supplies, lives into people. Earlier messaging, ive seen talked about how we are also trying to airlift supplies and getting resources, food, water to these essential safe points. And a lot of these are high up on the mountaintop. Some are hoping that we can work with our teams to get those farther down. As i mentioned, we did stage people. Theyre in vance, so we do have teams in safe areas at our hubs there that are working to get resources out to the community, but without having roads in, it is making her options very difficult in terms of how fast we can get resources and get help in looking ahead to what comes next. How do you see the next several days, even the next few weeks . Going how long do you think these Recovery Efforts will last im here in tallahassee where we all day have had trucks coming and going from this port behind me getting resources out into the community this is not something that is going to be disappearing in the next day or so or next couple of weeks. This is months, if not longer, we are talking about because again, there are some people who have not had a chance to go back home yet. We want people to know, we see you were here with you and were here for the long road to recovery because its going to be a long road of recovery. And were committed to that i know were looking at video as youre talking of just some of the damage that has been done, it it is truly staggering all right. Evan peterson with the red cross. Thank you so much for your time and good luck with all those rescue and are with all those Recovery Efforts and helping those people who need it. I am sure they are glad to have you thank you coming up. Israel, continuing to Hit Lebanon with airstrikes, but its also targeting the houthis in yemen. Were live from tel aviv. Thats just ahead. The idf says it attacked a Power Station and seaport there the iranbacked houthis are behind recent Rocket And Missile attacks on israel, including in the last 24 hours as well as on us warships and commercial ships in the region this attack comes as Israel And Hezbollah continue and continue to exchange fire across Lebanons Border than wedeman joins us now from beirut and ben, i know that the strikes have been continuing a pace. Theyre In Beirut and in southern lebanon. Tell us The View of the war for where youre standing again, these last 24 hours this strikes have been sporadic on the Southern Suburbs, but they simply more concentrated in the south as well as in the eastern around the Beqaa Valley where there have been some one strike that according to the Ministry Of Health killed a 21 people and injured 47. There was another strike outside of the southern City Of Sidon in which killed 32 wounded, 53 in total, it appears that the Death Toll for todays strikes exceeds 70 what were not seeing however, is any sort of significant hezbollah response. Certainly in the aftermath of fridays killing of Secretary General hassan and i said, im so far weve seen that hezbollah has launched, has claimed responsibility for 11 strikes over the border, but nothing particularly out of the ordinary. Now, is that because they are holding their fire for some sort of surprise, salvo or is it because its theres all of the decimation than well over actually, decimation of its military and political leadership today, his butler acknowledged i just two of their senior commanders were killed. One is ali karki, whos responsible for the southern front. In other words, the border with israel. They another, the other praised be the koch, who was the head of preventative security and also a member of his butlers Executive Council now, today, a lebanese security pretty source told cnn that the body of Hassan Nasrallah has been recovered, although that has not been acknowledged by hezbollah itself. Know its interesting. Jomana karadsheh, our colleague, was out and about today speaking with people, some of them supporters of hezbollah, some of them have actually not actually accepted that nasrallah is dead they go back to the 2006 war when there there was a period of three days during the initial phases of the war when people thought he was killed and then suddenly he reappeared on television there are those who are hoping theyd strangely enough, he might still be alive. Now beyond that, Beirut And Rest in lebanon is suffering from this massive influx of people who have fled the south of lebanon the Southern Suburbs and the because sally as well, Tens Of Thousands have fled to syria. And In Beirut, what were seeing is that people are still desperately looking for some form of shelter many of them still camping out in the central martyrs square in downtown beirut. Others, just along the coronation on beaches. Jim for their lives or in fear of their lives. Ben wedeman In Beirut. Thanks so much well, families of hostages still held In Gaza as almost a year after the October 7 attacks say they fear the expanding fighting between Israel And Hezbollah could not just overshadow the plight of their Loved Ones, but also really challenge any Ceasefire Talks. Next week marks the Oneyear Anniversary of the October 7 attacks. Joining me now is ruby khen. Hes the father of 19yearold itay. He was an american member of the idf believed by the israeli forces that he was killed on October 7. His body remains gaza. His father is with me now, ruby. Thanks so much for joining. I often think of view your family and the families of other hostages. And i appreciate you taking the time. Thank you for having me. We all one of the seven. Yes. Hostages seven and that number is so important i often think of you as well when the fighting expands and its whether that be In Gaza. But now in lebanon, that i wonder if you are hope dwindles of some sort of ceasefire agreement, not just between israel and lebanon, but between israel and hamas In Ga
