The uk could soon carry anti smoking messages and advice inside the packet, as well as outside. But will it be enough to convince smokers to quit . But first to the ongoing Recovery Efforts in hawaii. 96 people are known to have died in wildfires on maui, with officials warning that number is likely to rise. Hawaii governorjosh green said more than 2,700 buildings had been destroyed in the Historic Town of lahaina. Hundreds of people are still missing and only about 3 of the affected area has been searched. Residents say they had no official warning before they fled for their lives, raising difficult questions about the effectiveness of the emergency response, and whether more people could have been saved. Early warning sirens failed to sound, according to officials, a failure now under investigation by hawaiis Attorney General. Our correspondent, nomia iqbal, has more details. It will take years for the islands to recover. President biden declared it a disaster last week, releasing federal funds to support people on the ground. But many Scientists Say it is proof of a climate emergency. That is a top priority for President Biden and his white house. His opponents have a different view on climate change. But with much of maui are destroyed, and the death toll rising, it could be seen as a wake up call. Lets go straight to maui. My colleague Helena Humphrey is there for us. Bring us up to date on what is happening where you are. I am bring us uptodate on what is happening where you are. I am here on the road happening where you are. I am here on the road to happening where you are. I am here on the road to lahaina, happening where you are. I am here on the road to lahaina, and happening where you are. I am here on the road to lahaina, and if happening where you are. I am here on the road to lahaina, and if you i on the road to lahaina, and if you just take a look over here, it is over that hill that the community of lahaina lies. A community which lies in a state of utter devastation and destruction. So much of it, 80 of its now destroyed, and what you can see behind me is another roadblock which has popped up, because we are seeing a lot of these roadblocks now, because so many people are just trying to get back in, trying to bring a much needed aid, but you can see it as being enforced by the us military right now, because at the moment, they are only allowing in Emergency Workers and contractors, and that is because those sensitive, delicate Recovery Operations go on. We have been hearing more about that from the governor. He has been saying that they expect to uncover, to find up to 20 bodies a day now in these efforts, and utterly devastating death toll, which we are seeing right now. He says we may not even know the full extent of how many lives have been lost for at least ten days. We have also been hearing more updates from fema in terms of what has been deployed on the ground here, but many people are asking, why isnt there more aid coming in from the us mainland . In terms of whether they will be a visit from President Biden, fema has been saying they dont have a timeline on that, and they wouldnt want something to distract from the Recovery Operations. There are questions mounting about what happened and why people werent warned. What is the latest on that . Well, those questions what is the latest on that . Well, those questions continue what is the latest on that . Well, those questions continue to what is the latest on that . Ii those questions continue to grow. The sadness turns to frustration and stew anger. Firstly, brief regards to those Early Warning systems, and why they didnt sound. We know the Attorney General has launched a probe into that, but also now, about why the infrastructure on this island as well. You can see behind me here that some of the power lines. These power lines, operated by hawaii electric, provide power for 95 of this island, and now, a Class Action Lawsuit has been filed against a company, asking, essentially, why the electricity wasnt turned off when there was a warning from the National Weather service about the very real and deadly prospect of those wildfires. Now, the company, for its part, says it doesnt comment on pending litigation, and says it is focused right now on restoring the power on the island, and it also said it doesnt have a proforma operation of turning automatically the power off in these kinds of circumstances. It says it has to be put into through an emergency request, and i think it is fair to say that as we continue to see this devastating death toll grow, and with so many people unaccounted for, we can expect to see more and more of these questions, in the days to come. You have been hearing some of the heartbreaking stories of people being directly affected by these fires. Can you share what they have been telling you . Been telling you . People here are utterly traumatised, been telling you . People here are utterly traumatised, and been telling you . People here are utterly traumatised, and i been telling you . People here are utterly traumatised, and i think i been telling you . People here are utterly traumatised, and i think it| utterly traumatised, and i think it is fair to say that with that list of missing people, which is around 1000 right now, they are barely able to process what has happened. They are barely able to comprehend the fact that they have lost absolutely everything, and if you just take a look down here, what you can see is the port here. This is the harbour, and you have seen a lot of private citizens just using any means they can to come out and try to get on boats, to usejet can to come out and try to get on boats, to use jet skis, to try to get over however they can, to get aid into lahaina, because they need is there are so great that we are talking about food, shelter, clean drinking water. People have really lost everything. While i was down there, i met a lost everything. While i was down there, i meta man lost everything. While i was down there, i met a man called ryan, and he was out walking his dog, and he told me hed lost everything. What he was trying to do, essentially, was to take his dog around to try to offer some emotional support to other people, just you have time with that animal, to try to feel some love, some wont, amid all of this devastation. He is seeking out in the open, he tells me he has lost everything. Right now, he says i just feel helpless. That was his Parting Message as we finished our conversation. Despite that feeling of helplessness, the other thing you notice it, and it isjust difficult to communicate, how much people feel this, but they are so resilient. And they keep saying that maui is strong, we will rebuild. And local people here are looking after each other, and doing whatever they can, even though they have lost everything, and it is incredible to watch. A court in Fulton County is looking into election interference in the state and jurors could hand down an indictment against former president donald trump. According to the reuters news agency, a Charging Document was posted online then quickly removed from the Fulton County courts website. Shortly afterwards, a spokesperson for the District Attorneys Office said the reuters report that those charges were filed is inaccu rate. Beyond that, we cannot comment. So, its still unclear what happened and when well have an official update from the court. But the Fulton County District Attorney fani willis is widely expected to ask a grand jury to charge mr trump over efforts to overturn the Election Results in the state of georgia. Mr trump has denied any wrongdoing, calling the investigations politically motivated and a witch hunffl officials have heightened security in atlanta, and erected barricades outside the court. Mr trump has already been indicted three times once in the state of new york and twice more on federal charges. The Georgia Investigation has been going on for two and a half years. You might remember this now infamous Audio Recording of the former president calling brad raffensperger, georgia secretary of state, on january 2nd 2021. Take a listen. Joining me now is sarah krissoff, a former federal prosecutor in the state of new york. And the Public Opinion pollsterjohn zogby. I think what is interesting and im really looking for is to see if there were other individuals charged, and that is a real possibility here, that other members of trumps team his agents, in georgia here, are charged in connection with this case. Im also really interested in what the sort of statutes they re really interested in what the sort of statutes theyre using here are, and theres been talk about the racketeering statutes, the flexibility of the statutes as applied to the set of facts, because as you aptly noted, we have a pretty goodidea as you aptly noted, we have a pretty good idea of what the facts are. But it will be interesting to see how the District Attorneys Office chooses what laws to apply here. Dawn, coming to you now, we know that according to georgia law, if judge approves these proceedings, a trial could actually be televised, from the perspective of the former president , we have seen these previous three indictment he phased out strengthen his position in the polls. To you, sarah, regardless, we will see a lot of Media Attention on the possible trials that we are going to see coming out of georgia as well. We know right now that there had been three indictment, sarah, and we have already been talking about the fact it will be very difficult to schedule all of these trials in the middle of an election campaign. Where does in other states trial in georgia possibly fit into that . It is going to be really hard to slot this case it in with all of the other cases, and so, even the schedules that have been set or proposed in the other matters, and i know there are two of the schedules that have been set, and one that has been proposed, are very ambitious. Soto insert a fourth criminal case in here, i think makes things very difficult for scheduling purposes. And you have to think about, there are incredibly important at stake, but there is the schedule, which has to be designed to favour the defendant in these kind of cases. That is just what happens, and the cases cant be pushed forward unless, if it would infringe on the defendants constitutional rights. There is every indication that the Prosecutors Office is ready to indict, and that is what we are expecting to see this week. If that is the case, what do you think the trump Team Strategy will be here . Will it be similar to the other cases, to try to display the possibility of a trial . I cases, to try to display the possibility of a trial . I think they willt to possibility of a trial . I think they will try to delay possibility of a trial . I think they will try to run this case simultaneously to the washington case, although the special prosecutor, the Special Counsel is certainly trying to push that case forward very quickly, over this proposed january trial date. Here, the Health Secretary says the government took instant action to move Asylum Seekers from the Bibby Stockholm Barge after Legionella Bacteria was found last week. Steve barclay was questioned over why people were moved in when officials knew tests were being conducted. He told the bbc no one was harmed. The government plans to house up to 500 people on the vessel docked off the south coast of england while they wait for the outcome of their asylum applications. The barge had been billed as a cheaper alternative to hotels. The Uk Health Security Agency did not recommend evacuation until thursday night. That has been allowed to build because asylum Decision Making is very slow. Productivity is about a quarter today than it was just five years ago. There are some explanations for this. When we look at the home office bureaucracy, we see that people are going into these roles with no experience of the Asylum System in many cases, and morale is low, and Staff Turnover is high. And tonight, though, that will be pulling away north eastwards. So there is something a little drier and brighter in prospect for tomorrow. But in the short term, still some Rain Lingering across parts of South East Scotland and northeast england. And actually that rain will continue across some coastal parts pretty much until the end of the night. A few showers around western parts, otherwise largely dry with clear spells and temperatures of 11 to 15 degrees. So for tomorrow morning, some rain first thing across coastal parts of North East England that will then pull away into the north sea. And then, were looking at a drier and a brighter day with sunny spells. Still a scattering of showers, these most plentiful in parts of northern england, southern and central scotland, where there could be the odd flash of lightning, the odd rumble of thunder. Temperatures ranging from 15 degrees in lerwick to 23 there in london. Now, as we move into wednesday, this area of High Pressure starts to build, quite weakly at first. But underneath the high, with light winds, we could have some quite dense fog to start the day across southern and western parts of england, that will lift and clear. Then well see some sunny spells. Not as many showers at this stage, although more cloud will linger across some eastern parts of scotland with the odd spot of rain. Just signs of something a little bit warmer developing down towards the south east corner. And thursday should be a drier, brighter and slightly warmer day for many. Some early fog patches, especially across the northern half of the country. One or two showers across parts of scotland and down the spine of northern england. But some sunny spells and temperatures of 22 degrees for glasgow, 2a in london. That warmth coming from the near continent where, actually, its shaping up to be a pretty warm week overall. As we develop a southeasterly breeze, we will bring some of that warmth and humidity in our direction for the end of the week. However, just how warm it gets depends upon the progress of this frontal system, because this will eventually swing its way in from the atlantic during friday. Itll bring some heavy rain, in fact, some heavy thundery rain, and its likely to suppress the temperatures as well. So, we are likely to get into the middle 20s celsius, maybe just a touch higher, but some heavy rain through friday and into the start of the weekend. Hello, im sumi somaskanda.
