They barricaded the door is, kept us all away from the windows and we were told he had hostages in the Bowling Alley next to us. Some families or evacuated, some have beenin families or evacuated, some have been in lockdown as Emergency Services try to secure the area. There was a helicopter overhead, police cars arriving, Police Walking around the area, dogs were there, armed police the Bowling Alley. Bermuda park is in nuneaton in warwickshire, there is a cinema and hotel but the focus has been on the Bowling Alley with an incomparable reports and gunman had taken hostages. Tonight the chief executive told the bbc police had stormed the building. executive told the bbc police had stormed the building. I understand the police has stormed the building and the gunman has been captured and taken away and the gunman has been captured and ta ken away and and the gunman has been captured and taken away and i am about to get further news on the two hostages who we re further news on the two hostages who were my employees shortly, so im still waiting for news to come over. Authorities have not confirmed this but Warwickshire Police said the incident was not terror related and the Ambulance Service said there we re the Ambulance Service said there were no reported casualties. Now it seems this incident has onlyjust been resolved but everyone here will hope it has been done so as peacefully as possible. Well, my colleague vicki young spoke a short time ago to mehdi afshar. You heard him in that report. Hes the chief executive of mfa bowl in nuneaton where the siege happened. He told vicki what he knew about how it ended. I understand the latest news is that the police have stormed the building and the gunman has been captured and taken away, and im just about to get further news on the two hostages who are my employees shortly, so im still waiting for news to come over. But as far as you understand, are there any casualties . No, i understand there are no casualties, the police have done a magnificent job and the individual has been taken away. How have your staff responded to this incident which started about 3pm 7 responded to this incident which started about 3pm . It must have been terrifying for them and for customers and families who were at the Bowling Alley. Obviously with recent events we do train our staff, the manageress of the complex is very experienced at herjob and as this incident happened, everything was put into place that they had been trained for, customers or evacuated, especially children because you can imagine we have a lot of children. They were all evacuated to safety and the staff we re evacuated to safety and the staff were also moved from the premises, except for the two members of staff who were unaccounted for and the police have done a magnificentjob. They responded very quickly and touchwood, the incident has now come touchwood, the incident has now come to an end. Do you know anything about the man who took these two members of staff hostage . about the man who took these two members of staff hostage . I believe from information that i have received he is related, either a boyfriend or an ex husband of one of the staff but not the member of staff who was one of the hostages. So that is as far as i know. What do you know about how customers reacted . We know you know about how customers reacted . We know from other areas of the park, there are lots of restau ra nts, the park, there are lots of restaurants, a cinema, we know other customers were moved away, they said staff were pretty calm. Is it your understanding that customers were pretty calm, although this was obviously a pretty terrifying incident. It is, that you know as well as everybody else that the general public are very aware of whats going on these days, so anything like this, theyd take it seriously and with the training we give our staff, everything was put into place and the customers calmly moved away from the building and the police have done a magnificentjob in cooperating with us and the customers and without their help and expertise, there would have been more delay but everybody gelled together and as a result the individual has been arrested. For people who havent been following this all afternoon, could you describe to us how this incident started earlier this afternoon and what the first was that you and your staff at the Bowling Alley, what was the first they knew about it . About 2 30pm, i received a telephone call from the manageress on site that a gunman is in the premises and the promises had been evacuated, the staff and customers and police were on site and as she did the accounts, two members of staff were unaccounted for and that is how we realised that those two members of staff were the two people that were hostages in the bowling centre, but the customers and everyone were taken to the customers and everyone were ta ken to safety and the customers and everyone were taken to safety and that was about to 30 5pm. What was your first reaction . The first reaction is shocked that you have to be experienced and understand the situation and as the chief executive it is my will to ensure that all my staff, all the directors and support managers are acting as quickly as possible, as professionally as they can to ensure customers are safe and ensure our staff are safe. Instructions were given an senior directors were on site in the first 45 minutes. That was vicki young talking to the ceo of mfa bowl, where thats each took place, mehdi afshar. We can now speak to anne kane, who saw the gunman while she was in the Bowling Alley celebrating afamily was in the Bowling Alley celebrating a family birthday. How are you feeling . A little shook up but we are all safe. Take us through what you saw. We have all arrived and got a couple of lanes at the bowling for my daughter s birthday and we were just half an hour into our game when a member of staff approached my brother in law and said you need to get out, quite calmly, he asked why and he said there is a gunman in the building. There were five children, my daughter and nieces and nephews and we grabbed them and as i looked across the end of the Bowling Alley, the gunman was walking up to us, about 20 feet away, with a shot gun over his shoulder, at which point we started to panic and yelled run and grab the kids and nature they ran and we all followed. It was chaotic because it is the last thing we expected. How did he appear, what was his demeanour like . He was quite aggressive, he looked scruffy. The way he was walking i dont know if he was under influence of alcohol or drugs that he didnt look quite all there, to do Something Like he did would indicate he wasnt. He was very scruffy and about verbally. The language she was using, so we grabbed the children and ran. Was it a general atmosphere of panic once people realise they had to leave . Looking across, we were grabbing our children but there were other families running for the door and we heard people shouting run and myself and my parents and sister and everybody were following instructions, the staff were wonderful, they didnt cause much alarm but did what they had to do to get us all out. How did you feel that mfa bowl handled the evacuation . Really well. We found out after we had left, because we went to the car and the gunman came out and went to the car and the gunman came outand aimed went to the car and the gunman came out and aimed the weapon at people. We got in the car at that stage but it wasnt until we heard the news later that we realised they had to hostages, we have been watching it since we came home and i think its coming to an end so we hope everyone is ok. We understand, the ceo has spoken to worse and says the police have stormed the building and the suspect has been arrested. Waiting for confirmation from the police but thatis for confirmation from the police but that is what we know so far. Once you exited the building, a imagine the children must have been terrified. How easy was it for you to leave the retail park . Did you see the police arriving . to leave the retail park . Did you see the police arriving . I called the police since we came out of the building, my sister ran across to the frankie and benes and the cinema and warned them to be careful and i think they may have locked the doors, we jumped into think they may have locked the doors, wejumped into our car, the children were upset, my daughter and nephew, everyone is shaken up by a and it ruined the afternoon so were trying to salvage an evening to celebrate a birthday. Its one of those things in this days world but we hoping everyone is safe and hope the other families rok. Were glad to know you are safe and well and that whole gender dramatically but safely, enjoy the rest of your birthday celebrations. Just to let you know that we have some confirmation from West Midlands ambulance, who say that. We are pleased to say the situation in nuneaton is now resolved. One suspect has been treated at the scene. We do not know who that is. They have been taken to hospital by the ambulance, and this is via the official twitter handle of the West Midlands Ambulance Service. One person has been treated at the scene and taken to hospital by ambulance. The bbc has been speaking to a number of witnesses who describe what they saw. We were in the play area, the Adventure Park in nuneaton. We were ready to go home. My friends, they were ready to go next to the bowling, to the playground there. In the meantime we want to go out. But there was a guy with a gun, he took some hostages in the bowling area. So they wont allow us to go outside. They keep us there for a while. So the police told you there was a man with a gun . Yeah. The police and some other guys from outside. Some of them managed to go out. They say its a man with a gun. He went into the bowling area and took some hostages. That is all we know about him. They said theyd transfer us to a hotel and wait there but they didnt say anything, when we can go. The police came inside and prepared all of us to exit so we could go to the hotel near there. They transfer us there, so that would be a safe place. What was going through your mind when you were told this . Just very scared because we have small kids, so very scared. I was not so afraid. I was sitting at the window and i had the live on facebook, filming everything. Yes, but you never know what could happen. Yes, you never know what could happen in that time. I was worried about my kids but in that moment you dont know what to do. To be afraid, to be scared, to stay calm, but it was good because everybody was not scared. Everybody was scared inside. Yes, they were scared but nobody. No one panicked. Everybody was sitting calm and listened to what the police told us to do. Did you see lots of armed police . Yes, like in the movies. Lots of armed police with shells, with dogs and everything. That was one of the eyewitnesses speaking to us earlier. David crabtree is at the scene. David, we heard from the West Midlands Ambulance Service, they said one suspect was treated at the scene and confirmed that two other men have been assessed but work on injured and had been discharged. Just update us on and had been discharged. Just update us on those latest details. A lot has happened in the last are or so. We heard a number of loud bangs at about 6 35pm. Were not clear if they are related to that but it appears about 15 or 20 police stormed the building and a few minutes later we heard from people coming out of the holiday in who had been sent here for their safety to they had been told by police that they had been told by police that the incident was over. We saw an ambulance with a Police Escort going after wards nuneaton city centre. We have not heard any confirmed details of any injuries, one man may have slight injuries, others are still being assessed. The area is still cordoned off but it seems the police are now beginning to wind down the operation and people are being allowed out of the area. It was several hours ago that this happened and we heard from chris turner, who was caught up in the mayhem earlier on. Ive just come to pick the kids up from the soft play centre, but i parked around near the Bowling Alley. As ive then walked around the Bowling Alley to go past the main entrance, the guy actually ran up to the door with the gun in his hand, opened the door, told me to get out of the area with a few verbals. And then he turned to. There was a sparse crowd, but a few people there, and he said, ive already told you once to get out of the area, once again using verbals. Describe that scene. Everyone quickly. Well, everyone ushered back a little bit, because he did have a gun in the air. Again, he wasnt pointing at anyone directly, but he was threatening, and at that point i quickly went straight into the soft play area. I got my kids, and i said to the grandparents, weve got to go. We got out of there before it all got locked down, to be fair. This must have been a terrifying incident from your point of view. It was, i was shaken up at first, but i feel sorry for the people who are stuck in there. I didnt want to raise the alarm, there was a few people that kind of knew the situation, they were trying to shut the door, but i knew that ijust wanted to get out of there with my kids, get out of the area. He was clearly agitated, can you describe his demeanour . He was very angry. Obviously, he may have told people before to stay away. I was unaware of that, as i walked past, so that may have made him more angry about that. But yeah. You saw a sawn off shotgun. Indeed, and that is what i was focusing on. To be fair, i can recognise the guy briefly, but i was more worried making sure it was not pointed at me. And how far away were your kids at that point . They were in the building next door, but when we got out of the building, he wasnt outside again, he had obviously gone back inside, but within 25 yards of the place, we just went around the outside and got in the car. It seems to be a well orchestrated operation when Police Brought this salt to an end. We understand special councillors are being brought in to help people who might have been badly shocked by this. In the last few minutes there have been more people allowed from the holiday inn where they were taken for their safety a nd inn where they were taken for their safety and we know the police at some stage were using a drone to get images of what was going on inside one of the gunman held those people hostage. Police say every possibility is open about the background of exactly what happened here but it will all emerge in the next few hours and i see a number of people are coming out now who have been stuck in the holiday inn and have not been able to get back to their homes. The cordon is still up but there is a more relaxed atmosphere as police try to find out exactly what happened and whether this man had some connection or was a former employee of the Leisure Centre complex you had some problem with a couple of members of staff. That is one possibility, not confirmed, so the incident, not terror related, is now over as far as police are concerned at the scene but a big investigation to go on. You said you saw people being allowed to leave the holiday inn. How do they appear . They appeared to be quite relaxed. I think the police have played this well and told them not to worry, the problem was there we re not to worry, the problem was there were a lot of children at the centre, some of them at birthday parties, there was word of people running for cover into the toilets but it appears the gunman major most people were out of the way. He was waving his gun in the air to make sure people got away from the building and the area and he was concentrating on the two people who we re concentrating on the two people who were held hostage. We are hearing about a slight injury involving one man but we are still waiting for more details on that. David, thank you. We are hearing from chris clay, the Operations Director of mfa bowl, saying a gunman who held two members of staff hostage at the Bowling Alley has been arrested and two employees are believed to be unharmed. West midlands Ambulance Service have also updated us via their twitter page, confirming that one suspect was treated at the scene and taken to hospital by ambulance, and taken to hospital by ambulance, and two other men have been assessed but work on injured and have been discharged, excellent teamwork. That is the update, not yet clear if those were the people involved but certainly one suspect arrested at the scene, treated and taken to hospital. In other news today. The World Health Organisation has reversed its decision to appoint the zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe as a goodwill ambassador. After a wave of criticism, the head of the who, which is part of the United Nations, said hed listened to the concerns of donor countries and campaigners. Theyd said that mr mugabes record on the zimbabwean economy and health care should have ruled him out. Our Southern Africa correspondent, andrew harding, reports. He has been in powerfor 37 years. But the zimbabwe president Robert Mugabe held onto his newjob for less than a week. A humiliating blow for the 93 year old. Mr mugabe was selected as a global ambassador for the World Health Organisation by its first african boss who hoped the elder statesman might rally the other leaders in the fight against diseases such as cancer. But today the who quickly backed down after a fierce international backlash. Under president mugabes long rule, zimba bwes economy and Health System have crumbled. Britain and other western governments have accused him of widespread Human Rights Violations and targeted him with sanctions. There was delight today from a broad range of organisations which had considered mr mugabes United Nations role as a sickjoke. There was outrage that mugabe could be appointed a goodwill ambassador, especially given the state of Public Health services and access to basic Public Health facilities. Even painkillers in public hospitals. This comes as a relief that the who has seen the light. But mr mugabe is not without support, both inside zimbabwe and around the continent. Today his supporters describe the whos u turn as yet another sign of western meddling in africa. President mugabe has yet to react in person, but few zimbabweans can be surprised about this decision. Their leader may be proud of his achievements but tellingly he travels abroad for his own health care. A senior cabinet minister has told the bbc the government should consider borrowing more money to invest in new homes. Sajid javid said up to 300,000 new homes a year are needed, a level of construction not seen since the 1960s. Labour criticised the plans for not going far enough. Ben wright reports. Everyone knows there is a housing crisis. Politicians have been promising to solve it for years. Now it looks like there will be another building push in the budget next month. The budget will be covering housing, but what i want to do is make sure that we are using everything we have available to deal with this housing crisis, and where that means, for example, that we can sensibly borrow more to invest in the infrastructure that leads to more housing, take advantage of record low interest rates, i think we should consider that. As for how many, sajid david said that up to 300,000 more homes are needed annually, double the number built in england last year. For a family needing space in the south east of england, the housing shortage is a problem. We have four children, so trying to find something affordable is ridiculous. If we move further north, we could probably afford something at the right size, but logistically it does not work. Britain has mobilised before to tackle its need for homes. In the 1950s, Harold Mcmillan got britain building 300,000 private and Council Houses a year. We need a National Crusade to get homes built. In recent years, the government has made it easier for buyers to borrow their way into Home Ownership but ambitious building targets are hard to hit. I think that you have to work very hard to put in place resources to make that happen and i would be very surprised if we got to 300,000 anywhere in the next ten years. New houses are being built, but prices remain way out of reach for many first time buyers, and there has been an historic political failure to match demand with supply. But in its readiness now to borrow for building, not only is the government moving further away from austerity, it is also fighting on the same political turf as labour. If hot air built new homes, the housing crisis would be fixed by now. Any promise of new investment is welcome but it is actions not words that count and we have seen spending on new Affordable House building slashed by this government and is now at a 24 year low. What will be in the next budget box . Today a colleage was either giving a big House Building hint or doing last minute lobbying but if the government borrows on the scale suggested, it was early marker and new approach. We now have confirmation from Warwickshire Police, they have issued a statement confirming that the incident started at 2 30pm, they received reports of a man with a firearm in nuneaton. Earlier, speaking to david crabtree, confirming that people who were held in that lockdown area have now been started to be released to go home. That is an update regarding events taking place in nuneaton. Lets find out how the weather is looking. This weekend we have taken a battering courtesy of brian. These are scenes from the cornish coast yesterday, big waves being whipped up by strong winds that brian now are fairly innocent looking area of low pressure in the north sea, but this area of low pressure in the atlantic will keep us busy in the week ahead with weather front sweeping across the british isles. Bit of a breather for the next few hours, showers clearing, chilly for a time in the east, but coming into the west our first signs of that weather front by the time we get into monday morning, quite a wet start for many, temperature starting to rise again as the cloud and rain pile in. Mild first thing on monday, but a miserable looking start, Northern Ireland will brighten, and that will push its way in from the west as the day goes on. Eastern coasts, particularly down towards the channel, struggling with thicker cloud and merk through the day. The biggest change will be that it will feel milder, temperatures in the mid teens. Monday into tuesday, this low sweeping towards the west, mixed fare on tuesday. England and wales cloudy, heavy rain across the hills of wales, Northern Ireland and scotland brighter but breezy, heavier showers from time to time. But look at the mild air in the south, 18 degrees in london, and that mild air to the south of the front will try to nudge further north as we go through the middle part of the week. This will continue to snake across the british isles, a lot of uncertainty, like a seesaw, as to where it is going to sit, and exactly where we will get the warmest air and wettest conditions
