Университет основан в 1559 году как теологическая семинария Жаном Кальвином.В Женевском университете в настоящее время существуют следующие факультеты: юридический, медицинский, естествознание, экономический и социологический, теологический, факультет психологии, переводческий факультеты, а также существует несколько аффилированных центров и институтов.
