Detailed description is Η Νήσος του Διαβόλου είναι μια βραχώδης πλην όμως έντονα φοινικόφυτη νησίδα του Ατλαντικού ωκεανού που βρίσκεται σε απόσταση περίπου 7 μιλίων από τις ακτές της Γαλλικής Γουϊάνας, ακριβώς απέναντι από τις εκβολές του ποταμού Κουρού.Η Νήσος του Διαβόλου είναι η μικρότερη νήσος του νησιωτικού συμπλέγματος των νήσων Σαλύ.
Πρόκειται για μακρόστενο νησί που εκτείνεται από ΝΔ.
προς ΒΑ., συνολικού μήκους 1200 μέτρων και μέγιστου πλάτους, στο βορειότερο τμήμα του, 400 περίπου μέτρων και με μέγιστο υψόμετρο τα 130 μ..
Η νησίδα αυτή είχε μετατραπεί σε φυλακή εγκληματιών και πολιτικών κρατουμένων, χαρακτηριζόμενη έτσι ως «υψίστης ασφαλείας» (μεταφραζόμενο σε «μεγίστης αδυναμίας απόδρασης μέχρις αδύνατης»), που αναδείχθηκε ο προσφιλέστερος τόπος της Γαλλικής Δημοκρατίας για τον εκτοπισμό προδοτών αλλά και των διαφόρων πολιτικών της αντιπάλων, αλλά και από τις πιο κακόφημες φυλακές του κόσμου.
Ως φυλακές ξεκίνησαν να λειτουργούν επί αυτοκράτορα της Γαλλίας Ναπολέοντα Γ΄ το 1852.
Στην ιστορία της φυλακής αυτής, για κάποιο διάστημα φέρεται να χρησιμοποιήθηκε και ως λεπροκομείο.Γνωστότερος τρόφιμος των φυλακών αυτών ήταν ο Γαλλοεβραίος αξιωματικός Αλφρέντ Ντρέυφους που καταδικάστηκε για εθνική προδοσία και μεταφέρθηκε εκεί στις 13 Απριλίου του 1895.
Στον τετραετή εκεί εγκλεισμό του, μέχρι τις 5 Ιουνίου του 1899 που απελευθερώθηκε έγραψε περί τις 1000 επιστολές που συμπλήρωσε σε ημερολόγιο.
Εκτός αυτού στις ίδιες φυλακές μεταφέρθηκαν και πολλοί άλλοι κυρίως πολιτικοί εξόριστοι.
