In 1823, Zion became the third Methodist Society to organize in Lawrence County, and in 1836 Zion became the second Methodist society in the county to erect a church building..

For 13 years, the Methodists worshipped in a log church until a second building, a frame structure, was erected in 1849 on the farm of James and Susannah Vandermark.
The present church property on which this second building was erected was deeded in trust to the trustees of the Zion Methodist Episcopal Church on August 17, 1852..

The second church building was lighted by candles; there being but one song book, the minister would line the song, reading a few words at a time, and give the pitch to the congregation to sing..

Some years later, a large frame structure, was erected and dedicated by Bishop Bowman in 1873.
It was one of the largest and best country church edifices in the County, and probably in the entire conference.
Unfortunately, the building burned in the late spring of 1913..
