Detailed description is Nature Refuge in Daintree, Far North Queensland - a secluded tropical paradise not far from Daintree Village.
When we first arrived at this property in 1985 it was mostly covered in introduced pasture grass with the only large trees being the old Raintrees near the workshop/garage.
The land had been cleared for farming in the early 1900’s but by 1985 it was, at best, only marginally productive.
As we gradually learnt about the local environment and made new friends involved in rainforest conservation, a plan to restore native habitat began to take shape.
By 2006 Wild Wings & Swampy Things was declared a Nature Refuge and now in 2014 there is a productive eco-system inhabited by many species of both resident and migratory wildlife.
The various habitats represented on the property with over 600 plant species support a diverse bird population, numerous reptiles, amphibians, small mammals and an abundance of insect life.

Birds are probably our most obvious indicator that we have regained some balance to our ecosystem.
As habitat is restored we have listed ‘new bird’ sightings but it is also gratifying to see that the numbers of resident birds have greatly increased in the last few years..
Before deciding on an early retirement several years ago, so that we could travel and experience other parts of Australia, we had been gradually building up a small eco-tourism business.
We offered very personal guided walks around the property, mostly to keen bird watchers but increasingly to a number of visitors who were interested in our habitat transformation.
Now that the property has matured further the birding opportunities have increased considerably and our extensive walking tracks provide a pleasant and undemanding manner in which to enjoy the property and all it has to offer.
In addition to the attractive walks there are two comfortable bird hides, affording quite different views of two distinct areas of wetland.
Not far from the house we have a small shelter which we used as an introduction point with aerial photos of the property over a number of years to provide an overview.
There is another “lookout shelter” which faces NNE towards Thornton’s Peak and yet another shelter in the orchard not far from Barratt Creek.
This existing infrastructure would mean an easy start for anyone wishing to develop an eco tourism business..
The setting is picturesque and secluded however there is easy access to other tourist attractions such as Daintree River tours, Daintree Discovery Centre, Mossman Gorge and relaxing beaches..
