Detailed description is Whaleyville Volunteer Fire Department works diligently to protect the citizens alongside the career firefighters of the City of Suffolk.

Whaleyville Volunteer Fire Department (WVFD) was organized in 1946 out of community concern.
Through joint sponsorship by the local Ruritan club and Town Council, this organization was formed.
WVFD was chartered on April 19, 1954 with 26 members present.
On this date, the constitution was drawn and signed by L.
F.
Owens, President and J.
C.
Russell, Secretary.

The first fire fighting equipment was a reel pulled behind a pickup truck and used at the small hydrants around the town.
The equipment used to protect the firemen at this time was rubber boots, raincoats or just their street clothes.

Sometime around 1952, a house fire in Whaleyville caused the membership to realize how inefficient the fire fighting team was and how badly they needed more effective equipment.
With the help of N.
T.
Poarch, Sr.
and Camp Manufacturing Company, a 1946 International fire engine was donated to the Department.
Fire Chief Frank Robertson built a tank on the back of the truck and powered it with a portable 5 HP motor and pump.

The Town Council felt the department again needed to update to better fire fighting equipment in 1954.
A 1955 Ford chassis was purchased and equipped by Howe Fire Apparatus through Atlantic Supply Company in Suffolk.
This was the first fire truck owned by the department.
It was restored in 1984 and today is used as show piece in local parades, etc.

The department purchased its first turn-out gear in 1956.
Turn-out gear or fire fighter suits consisted of boots, coats and helmets.
At that time only 6 suits were purchased and left at the station to be used by whoever arrived at the station first.
As the department was becoming more organized and aware of its importance and the importance of efficient fire fighting techniques, members would enrolled in fire fighting classes taught by Nansemond County or firemen from Richmond.
To get more actual hands on training, old buildings were given to the department to burn.
At this time, Fire Chief Frank Robertson ordered two SCBA or Self Contained Breathing Apparatus units.
Seeing the importance of this equipment he immediately ordered four additional units.

In the early days of the department, the town municipal center and fire department were using the same building.
This building was owned by Mr.
E.
A.
Brothers to be used as long as needed.
Once not in use, the building would be turned back over to the Brothers’ estate and its heirs.
In 1963, the Bank of Whaleyville built a new banking facility.
The town of Whaleyville bought the old bank building to use as their municipal center giving the fire department full use of the Brothers’ building which they used until they outgrew it and the city built a new station which the department took possession of in July 1982.
Originally the Brothers’ building had a meeting room, a storage room and one bay.
Later on the department converted the storage room into a kitchen and added 2 additional bays..

The first paging system to alert members was where phones were placed in the homes of four members.
These members would receive a call from the County, and then they would respond to the station to set off a siren, alerting the other members.
This system was used from 1954 until 1970.
Today, we have pagers and text message alerts on cell phones.

A 1946 Ford Maxim pumper was purchased from Virginia Beach Vol.
Fire Dept.
for $1.00 in 1972.
The truck had a water capacity of 500 gallons.
Although 20 years old, it served as a second run engine as calls were beginning to increase.
In 1973, an International chassis was ordered for the department through the efforts of councilmen of the City of Nansemond.
This until was delivered to the department on July 4, 1974 and became part of the fire fighting team of WVFD.
This unit was the first piece of fire fighting equipment to bear the new city emblem of the City of Suffolk due to the merging of the Cities of Nansemond and Suffolk on January 1, 1974.
Shortly thereafter, the 1946 Ford Maxim pumper was sold.

WVFD has had only 4 Fire Chiefs, they are: Chief Frank Robertson – 1948-1969, Chief Charles H.
Brothers, Sr.
– 1969-1986, Chief Joseph Asbell – 1986-2001 and Chief Charles H.
Brothers, Jr.
– 2001 – Present.
This is a remarkable accomplishment in our 60 plus years in service.

Today, the department has 21 members on roll with all members certified by the state of Virginia as Fire Fighter I status or enrolled in a class to become certified.
The role of WVFD has changed over the years with the biggest change coming in the mid 1990’s.
The department took steps to become state certified to perform EMS duties, which is a large part of Emergency Service today.
This duty was enhanced in 1999 when WVFD partnered with the City of Suffolk to bring in 24/7 personnel to better handle this objective using WVFD personnel to support the overall public safety program through the City of Suffolk Dept.

Although Whaleyville is part of the largest city in Virginia, we are still a very rural, close knit community with roots tied deep into the history of Whaleyville itself.

WVFD holds their monthly meeting on the second Tuesday of each month.
The department sponsors two fund raising events, a spring and fall fish fry.
An event that has taken place for over 25 years.

WVFD operates on a yearly budget supported by the City of Suffolk.
This budget money however, only represents a very small portion needed to support this department.
Contributions to the department either by fund raisers or monetary gifts go to cover the cost of dress uniforms, equipment and capital improvements.
The latest such community support helped the department acquire a 2003 Kenworth tanker.
This could not have been done without the support of the community..
