West Kauai United Methodist Church is a church with two worship sites, Kaumakani and Kekaha.
The Kaumakani church is literally located in the middle of a sugar cane field.
The Kekaha church in located in the village of Kekaha, a former sugar mill town.
Each church is ethnically diverse with strong ties to the Filipino community..

From the humble homes of immigrant plantation workers originally from Korea and the Philippines, the “circuit west” approach of spreading the gospel by Methodists, world-wide, began on dusty dirt roads which brought the pastor to the villages of Kaumakani as early as in 1910 and in Kekaha, soon there-after.
Eventually, two sanctuaries were built: the first on land provided by the Robinson family “in the middle of the cane field” in Kaumakani, fronting one of the early campsites consisting of a few houses nearby; the second, near the houses for plantation workers at Kekaha.
From each, the voices of members were raised in song, sermon-messages, and prayer----sometimes in English, and often in the Ilocano dialect, the mother-language of most of the Filipino laborers’ families on their faith journeys with Christ on the island of Kauai..

The sanctuary, along with a social hall in Kaumakani, still exist with the will to survive! The church has survived hurricane damage twice, and continues to stand proud and tall.
The social hall has been “updated” and replaced with a new structure featuring a commercial kitchen, allowing the members to provide a free feeding program for senior citizens throughout several west-side communities by serving a well-balanced nutritional meal each Saturday without charge in Eleele, Hanapepe, Kaumakani, and Waimea..

The single-walled wooden structure in Kekaha originally hosted rough wooden benches as pews in it’s original location but was demolished after the dedication of the new church in 1947 which is still currently in use.
The fellowship hall, named “Runes Hall” named after the organizing pastor, once used for worship during construction of the sanctuary is currently used by the Head Start educational program for toddlers in the community of Kekaha..

The hurricanes were instrumental in bringing the congregational members from the two churches together in worship.
While the Kaumakani church went through the renovation process in the early 1990s, it made sense for both congregations to combine their worship service.
Through the years of being “brothers and sisters in Christ” and being served by the same appointed pastors, there was an immediate recognition of our strength in unity which led the way to the joint decision to merge!.
