Weaver S Of Wellsville

47 North St

York,

Pennsylvania,United-states - 17365

Detailed description is Since 1889 Weaver's of Wellsville has been a family owned manufacturer of quality meat products in York County, Pa.
In late May of 1889 a German American man named Jacob Weaver and his young bride Lily were travelling home from their honeymoon when disaster struck.
They were caught in the middle of the Johnstown flood, one of the worst disasters in American history.
The last car on the train that they were travelling on was swept away by the rising waters of the Conemaugh River.
Luckily, the young couple was unharmed and were able to return home to northern York County, PA.
Almost immediately after returning home, Jacob began cutting meat for local farmers and producing a variety of bolognas and sausages near his home.
At the time he could not have known that his humble job would one day become a company known all over the area for their quality meat products..
.
After some time, Jacob moved several miles from his original farm to a farm just outside of the town of Wellsville, PA.
He continued to slaughter livestock and produce his sausages and bolognas for local customers.
Lily and Jacob's son, Martin, worked alongside him from a young age until the United States entered World War I.
Martin, like many young men of his time, fulfilled his patriotic duty by enlisting in the army to fight for freedom in Europe.
Sergeant Martin Weaver was stationed in Lorraine, France, a region along France's border with Germany.
Martin fought with the infantry in France until the war's end in 1918.
After returning home, Martin took over what had become a prosperous butcher shop.
Martin soon moved the butcher shop from the farm to two small buildings in downtown Wellsville, a location that the company still resides at to this day.
Martin also opened a stand in the Farmer's Market on Penn and Market Streets in York, PA.
The stand opened by Martin continues to operate at the same location to this day..
.
Martin and his wife Beatrice had five children: three boys and two girls.
The boys, Martin Jr., Kenneth and Walter, worked alongside him from the time that they were able to help.
"I used to wake up at 4 am, work until 7 when I had to go to school, and then after school I had better be back there by 4 to help my dad finish for the day," recalls Kenneth, now 84 years old.
In 1960, Kenneth and Walter took over the company from Martin.
After six years of working together Walter retired, leaving Kenneth to manage the business on his own.
While Ken was in charge the business slowly began to transition into the wholesale foods industry.
Another building was added and a new meat cutting room was built on to the existing slaughterhouse..
.
Ken and his wife Isabel had four children of their own: two sons and two daughters.
Their sons, Jack and Craig, both attended York College in nearby York, PA.
Jack graduated in 1973 and Craig graduated in 1978.
From the time that they came to the company full time they began to take the reigns from Ken.
The three worked side by side for years, usually with about three employees until the mid-90's when the business began to raidly expand moving towards becoming a distributor.
Under the brothers, the company expanded to become a distributor of fresh meats, deli meats, frozen foods, seafood and cheese.
Large refrigerated warehouses now stand adjacent to the old butcher shop..
.
Jack left the company in 2008 and Craig now manages the business.
His wife Kimberly works alongside him as well as all three of his children.
His son Cole graduated from the University of Delaware in Newark, DE in May of 2010 and became the fifth generation of Weaver men to work full time for the company.
Two years later he was joined by his younger brother Seth, a 2012 graduate of Clemson University in Clemson, South Carolina.
Ken lived his entire life a short walk from the business.
It operated under his watchful eye until he sadly passed away in December 2011.
The company now employs over 30 people and continues to grow.
Weaver's still makes its smoked meat products over real wood fires the same way they always have, an art that is being lost in this age of mass production.
Weaver's manufactures a variety of products ranging from sweet bologna, a product originally made by Jacob Weaver, to their newer items such as Weaver's Skinless Smoked Hot Dogs.
Weaver's of Wellsville distributes to businesses in four states with its main focus in central Pennsylvania and northern Maryland.
The reach of the company, however, expands far beyond because of Weaver's ability to ship their products to anywhere in the United States.
People from all over the country, most of whom have resided in the region of York County at some point in their life, order a variety of products all year round from Weaver's knowing that there is no equal to the flavors offered for over 120 years by a true Pennsylvania Dutch company.
