Gloria Johnson is a Knox County School teacher with 26 years of experience in educating special needs children, a career that requires endless patience and energy! Most of those years have been in schools in State House District 13 including South Doyle High School, Central High School, and Richard Yoakley School.
At South Doyle High she led the effort to bring S-DHS in as a School of Promise in connection with America’s Promise and Knoxville’s Promise.
She has had a strong connection to the students and families in each of those schools and communities.

After graduating from Farragut High School, Gloria earned her degree in Education from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville.
Within two weeks of graduation, she began teaching at Mooreland Heights Elementary School and has loved every year she has been teaching since!.

Though her family has been in East Tennessee for generations, she was born in Colorado, moved to California and then to Mississippi, as her father was a Special Agent in the FBI.
Luckily, by her 7th grade year, her family was transferred to Knoxville, as was their hope.
Her parents, her brother and sister and their families all still live in the Knoxville area.
Except her two nephews who are currently serving in the military, one a linguist in the Air Force, the other a Special Ops Marine..

In 2000, Gloria made the difficult decision to move away from Knoxville and go to Denver, Colorado for a unique opportunity.
She was offered a job at Dakota Ridge High School working with students with emotional disabilities.
At the end of her first year there, Gloria wrote a grant for a program for Emotionally Disturbed students similar to the program she worked in at Knox County Schools.
The grant was approved and the program began the following year.
Many of the students at Dakota Ridge were transfers from Columbine High School who had difficulty remaining there after the tragic shootings.
Gloria received a system-wide award for “Respecting Students” in the Jefferson County School System, one of the largest in the country, after initiating the program.

After spending three school years in Colorado, Gloria returned to Knoxville to assist with her ailing parents.
She began teaching in Knox County Schools again at Central High School in Fountain City.
It was at this time that she became politically active and began volunteering in the Obama campaign.
She trained in South Carolina on school holidays with some of the campaign’s best field organizers and returned to Knoxville to organize 700 active volunteers to work in Knox County and to travel to bordering states..

She discovered that, in addition to her love of travel and live music, she also had a passion for politics and in 2009 ran for Chair of the Knox County Democratic Party.
She was able to energize the folks in Knox County and build the party District by District.
Gloria was re-elected in 2011 and continues to organize and energize the Democrats in Knox County.
Gloria is dedicated to making sure that working families, seniors, teachers, children and all Tennesseans have a voice.
