There has been much confusion over the years of the cemetery's name as to whether it is Woodland or Woodlawn.
After research it was confirmed that the Kentucky General Assembly which was begun and held in the city of Frankfort on Monday December 31st 1877 founded the Woodland Cemetery..

Founders: H C Bruce, Socrates Ruggles, L B Byard, T B Harrison, T B Stricklett, J W Darrow, James R Pugh, John C Ingram, T W Mitchell, and W C Halbert..

Currently the association has five members.

Plummer(President), Mary Highfield (Director), Lynda Polley (Director), Mary Hampton (Director), Kenny Claxon (Director), Ben Harrison (Treasurer)..

These new members were certified in 2011 by Elaine Walker, Secretary of State of the Commonwealth of Kentucky and recorded March 14th, 2011 in the office of Glenda K Himes (Lewis County Clerk) in the Articles of Incorporation Book #3 Page 342.

Among those buried in this historic cemetery are George Morgan Thomas and Samuel J.
Pugh who both served in the U.S.
Congress.
There are decorated military veterans, other prominent officials and business men and women who were founding fathers of Vanceburg and Lewis County.
