Facetté avec rigueur par des artisans qui cherchent à explorer toutes les subtilités de leurs instruments, ‘On Rapids’ le troisième album du groupe après ‘Pictures’ et ‘Obstacles’ (parus respectivement en 2005 et 2008 sur Matamore) et le premier à incorporer le français et sans aucun doute celui qui fera date.
Sur des bases déjà solidement ancrées dans le microcosme musical, le choix de John McEntire (Tortoise) pour assurer l’enregistrement et le mix arrivait comme une évidence.
Le projet fut scellé en 20 jours dans son studio Soma de Chicago, laps de temps nécessaire aux deux parties pour s’apprivoiser, se comprendre, et assurer le meilleur rendu possible.

Portés par des ponctuations de cuivres, par une batterie qui joue la carte de la subtilité et une signature vocale indéniable, les onze morceaux qui composent le disque s’architecturent en couches rythmiques contrastées, flirtent avec le vertige harmonique mais ne cèdent jamais à la facilité.
Cette richesse de composition évidente n’enlève en rien l’impression d’être ici face à un univers authentiquement pop, farouchement lumineux, à la manière de ces chambres à ciel ouvert esquissées par Robert Wyatt, Brian Wilson ou encore Jim O’Rourke.

‘On Rapids’ is een plaat gemaakt met oog voor detail, door muzikanten die hun vak kennen en die de meest subtiele mogelijkheden van hun instrumenten willen verkennen.
Dit is het derde album van de groep, na ‘Pictures’ en ‘Obstacles’ (verschenen in respectievelijk 2005 en 2008 bij Matamore), het eerste waarop Frans te horen is en ongetwijfeld hun belangrijkste album tot nog toe.
Gezien de solide basis die de groep al heeft opgebouwd in de muziekwereld was de keuze voor John McEntire (Tortoise) als opnameleider en mixer een logische beslissing.
De opnames vonden plaats in zijn Soma studio in Chicago.
Het hele proces duurde 20 dagen, wat beide partijen de nodige tijd gaf om aan elkaar te wennen, elkaar te begrijpen en samen te werken aan het best mogelijke resultaat..

De muziek wordt gedragen door de fraseringen van de koperblazers, subtiel slagwerk en een onmiskenbare vocale eigenheid.
De elf composities op dit album bestaan uit zorgvuldig opgebouwde, contrasterende ritmische lagen, flirten met de grenzen van het harmonische maar bezwijken op geen enkel moment voor gemakzucht of oppervlakkigheid.
