Follow us on Twitter @UWLNobacco13 A couple of months ago, the American Lung Association hosted a conference in Madison to discuss the next public health move: tobacco-free campuses.

Many Wisconsin campuses have already transitioned, or are in the process of transitioning to be tobacco-free.
In the LaCrosse area, two of our three campuses will be smoke-free.
Western Technical College has been smoke-free for a few years and Viterbo will be going smoke-free in Summer 2014.
There are many benefits that result from this transition such as increased campus appeal to incoming students, lowered maintenance costs (which directly influences tuition costs), higher productivity and standards of professionalism, as well as the obvious health benefits..
This initiative is not new to UW-L.
Two years ago, a group of students and staff surveyed the UW-L student body to gauge our campus' position on this issue.
The vast majority of students said they would like to see a smoke-free campus.
So why are we still talking about this? The initiative that was written two years ago had designated smoke shacks, or areas to which smokers could light up.
Students turned the initiative down requesting that UW-L be entirely smoke-free or not..
Currently, the policy is that smokers must stand 25 feet away from any academic building or residence hall entrance.
This is not very highly enforced, and unfortunately, smoke can still enter the windows due to wind.
Enforcement of the new initiative is yet to be decided.

Contrary to what some may believe, this initiative is not meant to take away smokers’ rights to smoke.
In reality this initiative is giving students, staff, and faculty the right to clean air.
There are many students on our campus that are affected with asthma, and have experienced asthma attacks upon entering an academic building after passing a smoker.

Our mission is to create a healthier and safe environment for all.
