Upcycle Tributes is founded upon the idea of taking your memory filled t-shirts and transforming them into a handmade quilt to showcase a special time of your life..

As the designer and creator of your quilt.
I will collect your t-shirts and consult with you about what you envision as well as your time with these special treasures.
The goal is to showcase the special memories while utilizing as much of the shirt as possible back into the quilt.
I have enormous amount of fabrics and materials from previous projects.
Based on the color scheme I will also add those to the quilt with the full intention of making it look as beautiful as I can..

Once I’ve sewn all the shirts and fabrics together to make the top layer, I begin the border.
For the border I will most likely have to purchase material.
I usually purchase a basic cotton or flannel for this portion.
I tend to gravitate towards a black border but I am always open for other color options that bring out the best colors of the quilt.

For the back of the quilt, I traditionally head to a thrift store and purchase a bedsheet.
This is the easiest, most practical and best way to upcycle in my eyes.
If you want to provide me with a bedsheet along with the t-shirts, I will gladly incorporate it into the quilt.
Having one solid big piece of fabric makes quilting a lot easier and cost effective..

For the quilt lines, I visit my friend Amy.
I drop off the top layer (sewn pieces) and the bottom layer (bedsheet) at her house and pay for the batting.
She has an incredible machine and can do many different patterns on quilts.
Think of the quilt as a sandwich.
The top and bottom layers are the bread and the batting is the meat and filling.
Her quilting sews the top and bottom layers with the batting, thus sewing “the sandwich together”.
Amy and I consult and choose a pattern.
It’s usually simple and one that doesn’t take away from the pattern on the quilt.
The lines go directly on the t-shirts and are a fluid pattern throughout the quilt.
Before I started doing quilt lines directly over the logos of the t-shirt quilts, I was a little skeptical because I didn’t want it to take away from the beauty.
But I’ve found that it truly enhances the quilt and gives it an incredible appearance and texture that are almost invisible.
I try to have the bottom quilt lines blend in with the bottom layer of the quilt but any color can be chosen.

Once I get the quilt back from Amy, I apply the binding.
This little piece of fabric is zig zag stitched along the edge and encloses the opening of the “sandwich”.
I usually buy a piece of fabric or use something I have stashed away to compliment the quilt.
I’m all about enhancing and bringing colors out, not fighting and making it an eyesore.
I can add a personalization on the quilt for an extra fee.
This is a great way to give a message to the recipient, a favorite saying or even just a simple name..
