Detailed description is Unogwaja is a growing legacy inspired by an incredible South African story of hope that we can all be part of #unogwaja.
Phil Masterton-Smith (who was given the nickname "Unogwaja" meaning hare in Zulu as he somehow resembled the animal when he ran in the mountains) became the youngest ever Comrades Marathon winner in 1931 aged 19 - a record that stands to this day.
In 1933, Masterton-Smith was living in Cape Town and couldn't afford the train fare to Pietermaritzburg to participate in the Comrades.
Instead of giving up, he cycled to the race and finished 10th that year.
In 1942 Masterton-Smith lost his life fighting at the Battle of Tobruk in the 2nd World War.
This happened to be the same battle that the original red socker Sidney Feinson was captured in after which the pact to wear red socks was made.
Two independent stories from many years ago had been brought together and inspired shoOops! & Unogwaja..
