Detailed description is The official Facebook page for the University of York Symphony and Chamber Orchestras.Nearly 200 audition each year and the orchestras normally represents players from about 15 departments.
Players have joined from many county youth orchestras, music college junior schools (Guildhall, RCM, RAM RNCM, Trinity etc.) and ensembles such as the National Youth Orchestras of Great Britain, Scotland, Wales and Ireland and the London Schools Symphony Orchestra.

The orchestra gives three main concerts usually given in the Sir Jack Lyons Concert Hall, although Central Hall (on the University Campus) and York Minster are also used for larger works.
Programmes tend to be vivid and exciting and repertoire in the last few years has included music from Stravinsky, Birtwistle and Takemitsu to Brahms, Mahler and Ravel.
In June 2000 the orchestra gave the European premiere of John Williams’ Trumpet Concerto conducted by Elgar Howarth.
The orchestra has occasionally toured and it has made three visits to Greece as well as to venues in Sheffield and Leeds.
The orchestra made a CD of organ concerti in York Minster in 2000 and this was issued commercially on the Amphion label.
The orchestra has also taken part in conducting masterclasses with conductors of international standing such as Jacek Kapszyk, Elgar Howarth and Peter Donohoe.
