A Universidade Federal da Bahia tem seu começo em 18 de fevereiro de 1808, quando o Príncipe Regente Dom João VI institui a Escola de Cirurgia da Bahia, primeiro curso universitário do Brasil.
Ainda no século XIX, incorporou os cursos de Farmácia (1832) e Odontologia (1864), a Academia de Belas Artes (1877), Direito (1891) e Politécnica (1896).
No século XX, Isaías Alves cria a Faculdade de Filosofia, Ciências e Letras (1941)..

O fundador da UFBA – O primeiro reitor da Universidade foi destaque na trajetória do ensino superior.
Nasceu em Salvador, em 1894, diplomado em medicina e fez especialização em cirurgia em São Paulo.
Ao retornar, ingressou na cátedra de Patologia e Cirurgia e dirigiu a Faculdade de Medicina.
Durante 15 anos de reitorado (1946-1961), liderou o processo de federalização e implantou a infra-estrutura física e de pessoal, escrevendo o primeiro capítulo de uma universidade integrada: Artes, Letras, Humanidades e Ciências.
Logo no primeiro ano de reitorado a Universidade da Bahia, constitui-se, formalmente.
Em 1950, passa a Universidade Federal da Bahia, integrando as escolas isoladas e instituindo outros cursos.
Em quinze anos sob o reitorado de Edgard Santos, a UFBA floresceu nas áreas de artes, humanidades e saúde..
