Desde 1977, un grupo de educadores se dió a la tarea de fundar una institución de formación técnica con el fin de ofrecer carreras intermedias a los bachilleres colombianos..

Después de haber recibido visitas evaluativas del Ministerio de Educación Nacional, el centro educativo obtuvo el permiso de iniciación de labores para sus programas iniciales de: Tecnología de Plásticos, Electromedicina, Electrónica Industrial y Mecánica Automotriz.
Para lo anterior, el Ministerio expidió la Resolución No.
15572 del 25 de Octubre de 1978, que concede igualmente la licencia de funcionamiento con el nombre de Escuela Colombiana de Carreras Intermedias..

El 11 de marzo de 1980 con Resolución No.
03367, la institución recibió la aprobación del plan de estudios para los programas registrados.
El 28 de marzo de 1985, con la Resolución No.
2683 es otorgada por las autoridades competentes la personería jurídica de la Escuela..

A partir de la Ley 30 de 1992, , se dio la posibilidad de crear nuevos programas y la Escuela registró, cumpliendo los requerimientos de ley, los siguientes programas técnicos profesionales: Mecánica Industrial, Ciencias de la Computación, Telecomunicaciones, Desarrollo Ambiental, Desarrollo Empresarial, Diseño de Modas, Gestión Tributaria y Aduanera, así como Comercio Exterior y Negocios Internacionales..

Actualmente, la Institución ofrece a los bachilleres colombianos, la totalidad de los programas mencionados, bajo la inspección y vigilancia del ICFES..

El día 22 de septiembre de 1995 se firmó el convenio interinstitucional de mutua colaboración entre la Universidad Santiago de Cali y la Escuela Colombiana de Carreras Industriales, suscrito por los respectivos rectores de cada uno de los centros de educación..

El objeto del mencionado convenio se fijó en fomentar actividades conjuntas en planes de formación académica, intercambio de docentes y alumnos, intercambio de docentes y alumnos, intercambio de espacios físicos y servicios, coordinar e incentivar proyectos de investigación y de desarrollo tecnológico, asesoría y asistencia mutua..
