La Universidad de las Fuerzas Armadas - ESPE es una institución de educación superior, con personería jurídica, autonomía administrativa y patrimonio propio, de derecho público, con domicilio en la ciudad de Quito y sede principal en la ciudad de Sangolquí; se rige por la Constitución Política de la República del Ecuador, la Ley de Educación Superior y por la Disposición Transitoria Vigésima Segunda de la Ley Orgánica de Educación Superior (LOES), publicada en el Suplemento del Registro Oficial No.
12 de octubre de 2010, se dispone que a partir de la vigencia de la LOES, se integrarán la Escuela Politécnica del Ejército ESPE, la Universidad Naval Comandante Rafael Morán Valverde (UNINAV) y el Instituto Tecnológico Aeronáutico (ITSA), para conformar la Universidad de las Fuerzas Armadas “ESPE”, para lo cual se debe proceder a la formulación del estatuto de la Universidad.
El Estatuto de la Universidad de las Fuerzas Armadas “ESPE”, aprobado por el Consejo de Educación Superior, el 26 de junio de 2013, marca un nuevo hito en la trayectoria de la Institución.
