Underage Democracy Project offers two important programs to get high school students civically engaged.

The first is the Montana Outreach Project.
The internship program started in Missoula in spring 2013 with 5 high school interns from school around Missoula came together to pass the technology levies to help fund their schools.
The technology levies passed by less than 2,000 votes each after we had made over 4,000 contacts with Missoula voters! .
Now, Missoula boasts a year-round internship with a high school fellow and 10-12 interns each semester.
Since graduating the program, 2 interns have gone on to organize campaigns, several have worked with us to bring the internship to other communities, and all of them have come back to volunteer!.
The Montana Outreach Program focuses on developing internship programs across the State of Montana where students can learn grassroots organizing skills in a weekly class, lead their own grassroots campaigns for change they care about in their communities, and engage peers.

The second program is Schoolhouse Votes, a one-time one-hour class that meets social studies content standards for the State of Montana.
This focuses on teaching students how they can get involved in their own governments, their own communities and to make change by engaging them in discussion about relevant, local issues.

They learn about the structure of the city council, how ordinances are passed, the State structure, what kind of campaigns are run for issues, and what issues affect them.
They also learn about the importance of voting and can be registered to vote right there.
