A Universidade Federal de Alagoas é uma instituição federal de ensino superior, instalada em Maceió, no Campus A.C.
Simões e em mais dois campi no interior do Estado: Campus Arapiraca e suas unidades em Viçosa, Penedo e Palmeira dos Índios e Campus Sertão, com sede em Delmiro Gouveia e sua unidade em Santana do Ipanema.São cerca de 30 mil alunos matriculados nos 114 cursos de graduação, distribuídos em 22 Unidades Acadêmicas, na capital, e nos campi de Arapiraca e do Sertão.
Na modalidade de pós-graduação, são 13 cursos de especialização, 35 de mestrados e 12 de doutorados, que contam com 3.312 alunos.HistóricoA Universidade Federal de Alagoas – maior instituição pública de ensino superior do Estado - foi criada em 25 de janeiro de 1961, por ato do então presidente Juscelino Kubitscheck, reunindo as Faculdades de Direito ; Medicina, Filosofia, Economia, Engenharia e Odontologia .O novo Estatuto da UFAL, aprovado pela Portaria do MEC nº 4.067, de 29 de dezembro de 2003, estabeleceu critérios para que um Centro ou Departamento pudesse se tornar uma Unidade Acadêmica.
Em janeiro de 2006, foi homologado o Regimento Geral, por meio da Resolução Nº 01/2006 – Consuni/Cepe, que deu oriegem a uma nova estrutura organizacional.Dentro do Plano de Expansão das instituições públicas de ensino superior, denominado Expansão com Interiorização, do Governo Federal, a UFAL criou, em 2006, o Campus Arapiraca, no agreste alagoano, que se estende de sua sede, em Arapiraca, para as unidades em Palmeira dos Índios, Penedo e Viçosa.
Em 2010, foi inaugurado o Campus do Sertão, com sede em Delmiro Gouveia e a unidade de Santana do Ipanema.
