Tarihi 1389 yılına dayanan Türkiye İstatistik Kurumu (TÜİK), günümüze kadar önemli süreçlerden geçerek, Türkiye'nin istatistik altyapısını çağdaş seviyelere getirmek, bilimsel ve teknik niteliğini ileri dünya ülkeleri standartlarına yükseltmek amacıyla hareket eden ve ülkenin karar süreçlerinde etkin rol oynayan bir kurumdur.
Bu amaç çerçevesinde, önemli ve sessiz bir reform niteliğinde olan Türkiye İstatistik Kanunu hazırlanarak 2005 yılında yürürlüğe konmuştur.
Kanunun yürürlüğe girmesiyle, istatistik alanında planlı döneme geçilmiş, resmi istatistiğe getirilen tanımla kavram karmaşasına son verilmiş, İstatistik Konseyi ile de ulusal bir platform oluşturulmuştur.
