Detailed description is This page is to commemorate the life and times of Vern Watkins .Vernon Richard Watkins, Sr.
was born on May 26, 1938 in Detroit, Michigan to William and Elizabeth Watkins.
He attended Cass Technical High School where he excelled in academic and was the captain of the Basketball Team where he and his brother William Jr.
took the championship his junior year.
While attending Cass Tech he met his beautiful wife Marion Mason and they were united in holy matrimony on April 29, 1956.
He attended Wayne State University and the University of Michigan.
Vernon taught Psychology for Everyday Living and The History of Black Workers in America.
He was also instructor at the Labor Institute, a joint project of Wayne State and the University of Michigan.
During the same time he became the 2nd Black Linotype machine operator in the Graphic Arts International Union and was in the Michigan Printer’s Union for 11 year..

Vern began his career with AFSCME International in 1972 as an Education Representative involved in training union members.
He was AFSCME Area Director for the Washington, DC Capital District area, as well as for California.
He served for 17 years as the Executive Assistant to William (Bill) Lucy, the legendary former International Secretary-Treasurer of AFSCME.  He directed AFSCME’s internal organizing program called “Strength in California Campaign”.
He was the principal architect of AFSCME’s successful drive in organizing 40,000 University of California employees.
He played a major role in the landmark pay equity (comparable worth) settlements in Los Angeles and San Jose..

Vern was a trusted advisor to numerous top-tier politicians, from Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
He also served as Political Director for Michael Dukakis’ presidential campaign and also Kathleen Brown’s campaign for Governor of California.
He was the Labor coordinator for the National AFL-CIO 2004 Voter Protection Program in Michigan.

He was an Executive Committee member of the Democratic National Committee and is a long time member of many civil rights and community organizations such as the Coalition of Black Trade Unionist (CBTU), Southern Christian Leadership Conference and the American Civil Liberties Union..

After retiring from AFSCME International in 2004, he joined the Los Angeles chapter of AFSCME Retirees as Vice President of the local chapter in 2005.
In recent years, Vern was an active member of AFSCME Retirees Chapter 36, working closely with its president, Judy Katz.
Just a few days ago at a Local Leadership Summit held at Council 36, Vern stood before a packed room of AFSCME activists to urge aggressive new expansion of the Retirees Chapter.  As always, he captured everyone’s attention.
He was an inspirational and tireless soldier on the battlefield for working people.

Vernon accepted the Lord as a youth at Lomax A.M.E.
Zion Church.
He originally joined Friendship Baptist Church in 1981 and rejoined in 2005 and was active with the Silver Eagles Ministry.

Vernon leaves to cherish his memory the love of his life for 58 years, Marion Elizabeth Watkins, their four children Vernon(Rick) Jr.(Margaret), Celeste (Lonnie Wall, Sr.), Machel Elizabeth Morgan, Angelia (Rick Hill), his sister Louise Hamilton and uncle Sammy Watkins.
His 10 grandchildren Vernon (Ricky) III (Jennifer), Elijah Watkins, Leslie, Lonnie II (Breauna) and Victoria Wall, Nicholas, Alexander, Austin and Mariah Holden, Christophe Samuel, and 5 great-grand children Vernon (Richie) IV, Azalia, Azreal, and Aviana Watkins and Trinity Wall.
His extended family Rev.

Johnson, Alexander Johnson, Maritza (Wendy) and Michael Rugley, Cynthia and Christopher Cespedes, Nancy Rosario, Angel Pagan, James Howell II and a host of other nieces, nephews, 9 sisters and 5 brothers in-laws and his beloved Union and Political brothers and sisters..

Vernon made his transition early Thursday morning, March 5, 2015 to join his mother, father, sister and 3 brothers, a niece and nephews to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
God called this tireless soldier home for he had fought the good fight, he finished the race, and he kept the faith.
Well done my good and faithful servant…enter into my rest.
