Trakya Üniversitesi, Edirne merkezli bir devlet üniversitesidir.1973 senesinde İstanbul Üniversitesi Cerrahpaşa Tıp fakültesine bağlı Edirne Tıp fakültesiyle ilk adımları atılan, 20 Temmuz 1982’de kuruluşunu tamamlayan Trakya Üniversitesi 12 fakültesi, 4 enstitüsü, 6 yüksekokulu, 10 meslek yüksekokulu, 1 konservatuvarı, 28 uygulama ve araştırma merkezi, 1 anaokulu, 4 bölümü ve 2017 yılı itibarıyla yaklaşık 47 bin öğrencisi vardır.
Trakya Üniversitesi Türkiye'nin Balkanlarla olan ilişkilerinin geliştirilmesinde bölge üniversitesi rolünü üstlenmiştir.Sadece bilimsel gelişmelerle değil; kültürel, sanatsal ve sportif başarılarla da adından söz ettiren Trakya Üniversitesi, Trakya Bölgesi’nde kara, su, toprak kirliliği başta olmak üzere çevre problemlerini araştırmak, kontrol etmek, çözüm önerileri üretmek amacı ile sanayi çevreleri, yerel yönetimler, sivil toplum örgütleri, kamu kurum ve kuruluşları ile görüşmelerde bulunan ve Ergene Havzası Çevre Düzeni Planı Projesini başarıyla tamamlayıp Çevre Bakanlığı’na sunan, Avrupa Konseyi 2004 Yılı Avrupa Müze Ödülü ile müzecilik anlamında çok ciddi adımlar atan ve Türkiye'nin tüm dünyada adının duyulmasında etkin rol oynayan bir üniversitedir; ayrıca Türkiye’de ilk defa öğrenci temsilciliği seçimi yapılan üç üniversiteden biridir.
Araştırma Görevlisi ve Öğrenci Temsilciliği Sistemi ile seçilen öğrenciler ve araştırma görevlileri senato ve yönetim kurullarında öğrencilerin ve araştırma görevlilerinin fikirlerini ve isteklerini iletme olanağına sahiptir.
