Er hat einen drei Jahre jüngeren Bruder namens Christoph sowie eine jüngere Schwester namens Raphaela Ackermann.
Die Familie war aus Oberschlesien geflüchtet und wurde im oberfränkischen Kulmbach sesshaft.
Gottschalk war Ministrant in der Kulmbacher Stadtpfarrkirche Unserer Lieben Frau.
Er machte 1971 sein Abitur am humanistischen Markgraf-Georg-Friedrich-Gymnasium in Kulmbach.
Nebenbei jobbte er als DJ in einem Kulmbacher Tanzlokal und erteilte Nachhilfeunterricht, außerdem arbeitete er als Kinder- und Jugendbetreuer der katholischen Kirche.
