Detailed description is A Volunteer Marching that provides music for Union Fire Company In 1932 the Union Fire C0.#2 Band was organized by J.
Walter.
Cornell.
George Slater of Cohoes was engaged as instructor and J.Walter Cornell as assistant.
Due to World War II and other causes they disbanded on December 1, 1947 and formed the Ballston Fire Department Band..
The current band was formed in 1985 and the Union Fire Company #2 assumed full sponsorship of the band.
It was renamed The Union Fire Company #2 Marching.
Band, under the direction of John Roche..
The Union Fire Company #2 Band is a military styled band that provides music for the fire company at various events throughout the year.
The band is a unique musical unit as it is one of only a few bands in the State that is actually part of, and maintained by a fire company.

We play polkas, show tunes, Irish tunes and hymns.
But mostly marches.

We attend our local parades and ceremonies, celebrations and our favorite, Fire Conventions.

Our musicians are comprised of a very diverse group.
Some are Union Fire Company members others are family members, friends, and neighbors.
We also have a wonderful range of ages.
To our little preschooler who wears a uniform passed down through several generations, to students, professionals, military, and our retirees.
Some have played an instrument non stop for years.
Others not so much.
Some have been members since it began and some have just started.
And then there are the ones that we haven't seen in a while but are more than welcome to come back.

He helped to reorganize the band in the mid 80s and is the only person capable of doing so much.
It takes a distinct talent to be gentle enough (we are volunteers) yet strong enough (there are a lot of opinions, and situations to consider) to do this job.
He has spent many years and an unbelievable amount of hours directing this band.
Even members of the band are unaware of all of the work it takes to keep this group going.
If you ask him why I think he would say he loves doing it.
Or perhaps he would say he loves the people even more.
