In the early days of the 20th century it was the place to go for the wealthy and elite of the Cumberland, Maryland area.
Historical Timeline of the Property .
1 Potomac Heights, Ridgeley, West Virginia.
Oct 25, 1754 – Lord Fairfax transferred the land to George Mason, as the attorney for and a shareholder of the Ohio Company.
The Ohio Company supplied the provisions for Fort Cumberland.
Lawrence Washington was also a shareholder of the Ohio Company.
Lawrence Washington was the older half-brother of George Washington..
When Fort Cumberland was all but abandoned in 1763, the Ohio Company reclaimed the land and put it up for sale.

1773 – George Mason purchased the land which included about 350 acres around Knobley Mountain from the “flats” on the west side of the hill and around to the lower area below the confluence of the Potomac River and Wills Creek.
Over a period of time Mason accumulated a total of 1,083 contiguous acres in the area..
1785 - The land was conveyed from George Mason to James McCubbin Lingan, an officer in the Continental Army during the American Revolution..
1803 – Captain George Calmes purchased a parcel of the land along the Potomac River.
Capt.
Calmes was an officer during the Revolutionary War.

1816 - Calmes built a 22-room mansion on the property..

1835 – George Calmes died at home on the bluff at the age of 80.
The property stayed in the Calmes family.
The land and home passed down through George Calmes' family through most of the 1800s.
Several additions were made to the mansion over the years.

Upon the death of George Calmes, the house passed to his son-in-law, Captain Roger Perry.
Judge Thomas Perry, the son of Roger Perry, a pioneer member of the Cumberland bar, and for a number of terms a representative of Allegany County in the House of Delegates of Maryland, was born in 1807.
(His mother was Miss Calmese, whose father owned the handsome estate just across the Potomac from Cumberland, afterwards known as the Perry estate.) He studied law under his father and was admitted to the bar in 1828 and soon became one of its most prominent members.
He and his wife had a little girl who died at the age of two years on April 16, 1850.
She was buried on the property but her grave has never been found..
During the Civil War, Rebel soldiers were entertained at this mansion and at one point had artillery placed to bombard Cumberland.

According to papers presented to Lemuel Powers, who owns a building on nearby Carpenter Avenue which at one time was the carriage house for the mansion, there was a walking bridge between Cumberland and Ridgeley, and the people living in the mansion would also take a boat to the other side in Maryland..

Late in the 19th century, portions of the town (which was alternately called Sinclairville and St.

1904 - A group of wealthy businessmen from Cumberland purchased the Calmes Mansion from the Carpenter family and created the exclusive Potomac Club, which operated in Ridgeley as an important tennis, boating and social club until 1919.
They secured the old Perry Mansion (earlier called Calmes Mansion), located on Carpenter's Hill, just across the Potomac River from Cumberland, renovated its facilities and opened tennis courts, a boating wharf, and a swimming beach for its members.
From the clubhouse, one could enjoy a striking view of Cumberland and the river.
The club operated until 1919, when it was sold, and eventually torn down later on.

The town was named after Charles Ridgeley, one of the early settlers of the town and a respected businessman..

1915 - Vandegrift was also one of the founders of the first bank in Ridgeley..

1919 – James Vandegrift bought the clubhouse and surrounding land from the Potomac Club on April 24, 1919.
He subdivided the property into several lots.

Vandegrift then dismantled the mansion and preserved many of the fixtures and furnishings of the property.
